Flyers drop set one 25-19. XU hits .333 UD hit .182.

Dayton's serve receive is awful. They can hardly keep the ball in play on Xavier's serve. I counted about six free balls they had to send over just because they couldnt handle the XU serve. This first set was not very competitive.

Muskies just going to the right side every time for easy kills. No Flyer defense at the net.

Much to improve on.

10-10 second set. Flyers making all kinds of mistakes. Just not very good play right now. Should be up in this set by 3-4 points.

15-13 Flyers. Still all kinds of mistakes. Serving the ball wide out of bounds, missing receives, bad touches. We should really be in total control of this set.

19-15 Dayton. Xavier timeout. We're hitting .419 but only up 4 because of all the other miscues. We clean those up and we win this set.

19-18. Lost a net joust and then a poor receive then a Xavier kill. So two errors right out of the timeout.

22-19. XU tried second touch kill and UD blocked it.

25-21. Tied 1-1.

You can look at this two ways: we're lucky not to be down 2-0 based on the number of gaffs and goofs we've made, or if we just eliminate all the gaffs and mental brain farts, we should take firm control.

Offensively we hit better in the second set and received a little better, but receive is still not great. The first touch keeps getting away from us and making us chase to get the kill attempt in a good position.

Our defense at the net needs to improve as well. We just eliminate the bad service errors (the ones Brian hates -- the wide errors) and serve receive problems, I think we're the better side and we win.

8-8 Xavier 3rd set. Just not clean and crisp.

15-12 Dayton. XU timeout. UD starting to hit a bit better and dig a little better. We missed a cpl chances to get points when XU was out of system however.

25-21 Krabacher skies for big air from the back line to win set 3. We gave up a couple cheap points at the end of that set after being up 6. It got to 23-20.

We got tougher in set three. We keep that toughness up and just eliminate more of the mental lapses and I think we're ok.

13-12 Dayton set 4.

Krabacher sidewinder, then Kray stuffs at the net! 25-14 in the fourth. Game set match.

Started off very sloppy and slow. Completely out of sorts for 1.5 sets. About midway through set three we just stopped kind of playing wimpy and started getting tough and digging balls out and blocking at the net.

Once we got tougher, the match swung our way. Good win. Plenty to work on, but we got the result.

How was the crowd there tonight?

The key feature of set 4 seemed to be our 11-0 run from being 11-12 down. But...what happened in the match before that? Seemed very inconsistent, was it nerves because it was X?

How was the crowd there tonight?

I thought the crowd was disappointing to be honest, no where near what appeared last year on pack the house night. Those of us that were there suffered through those first 3.5 games. Looked like X ran out of gas. All is well that ends well.

I thought that student turnout was pretty good for a weekday and many stayed until the end. The local turnout wasn't that great but it was also a monday evening.

Those serves out of bounds to the side did bother me. I am guessing that they were purposely serving to a particular xavier player who was almost standing on the sideline but I don't kinow that for certain.

We really played half asleep the first set up until xavier reach 22 or 23 and then started to come out of it a little. Our passing was much better in sets 3 and 4. I thought that they aggressively attached Janna on serve receive and that she gradually adjusted and played better and better as the match went on. Xavier has some very good power servers

When Xavier gets a perfect first pass they are tough to stop because their offense is so fast. But, our blocking gradually adjusted to the speed of their offense and improved all night.

It was also nice that the team lost set 1 when they weren't playing well. They knew that they needed to pick it up and they responded.

I thought that Ally played good defensively tonight, she has improved a lot since the season began. Without looking at the stats Kray and Megan stood out.

I thought Krafka looked like a frosh those first couple of sets. Finally, in the fourth set, she had some outstanding digs. Vargas was serving when we made that run in the last set. We were blocking and digging everything. It seemed the Musties ran out of gas. Kray had some big time swings in the last couple of sets. Also, props to the Red Scare. The Xavier player that was jump serving and giving us trouble had to serve twice in front of the Red Scare. In separate rotations she stuck two in a row in the net. We never saw the jump serve again the rest of the match. I think she let the Scare get to her.

. . . The local turnout wasn't that great . . .

I'm in Ireland, otherwise I would have been there. :D

Kelly mentioned 2-3 weeks ago in a chalk talk that they were giving the green light to janna krafka. He said that they had previously been telling her where to go and what to do and she followed orders. But, she is very good at reading what the offense is doing and will make more plays if given more freedom. She is covering a huge amount of the court right now and will get better and better and even better after that.

Just checked the stats. Kray did stud out with 25 kills and only 2 hitting errors for the match. Megan had 12 kills in only 19 attempts with no hitting errors for a .632.

Ally had 12 digs, only two behind Janna. Ally played well.
