Massachusetts (A10 Quarters) Game Thread

3 Wins away from an NCAA Tourney, let's get started tomorrow... The Minutemen scored 99 tonight and have played well since it was announced Matt McCall wouldn't be back next year.

Game is at 6 PM on Friday Night and will be shown on the USA Network.

Starting Lineup:
G 11 Noah Fernandes 5’11” 175 JR Mattapoisett, MA
G 22 Rich Kelly 6’1” 175 GS Shelton, CT
G 23 T.J. Weeks Jr. 6’4” 185 RS SO Warwick, RI
F 10 Greg Jones 6’7” 225 JR Bronx, NY
F 0 Trent Buttrick 6’8” 240 GS Bloomsburg, PA

Fernandes makes them go (14.5 PPG 5.3 APG 1.4 SPG)... Kelly (46%) and Weeks (37%) can fill it up from 3... Buttrick is their main big (10.8 PPG 6.5 RPG), but he can also step out for 3.

3 Main Keys... Take care of the ball, Dominate the Glass & Defend the Arc, they shoot 37.4% as a team, as best as you can.

As lhs mentioned, they are fantastic at knocking down 3 pointers and take them at a pretty good clip (41st in the country). Steadman doesn't take many (1-5) and doesn't appear that many of their low post options outside of Buttrick take many 3 pointers. If I was McCall, I'd consider playing Buttrick at the 5 and mixing it up b/w CJ Kelly and Greg Jones at the 4 spot, go small, spread out the court and let it fly. That is their best hope in my eyes on the stats.


Outside of 3 pointers, they are one of the worst shooting teams inside the arc, they are one of the worst teams defensively and even worse when other teams get inside the lane and don't block many shots. They shot free throws at an excellent rate and get to the line at a solid clip (82nd in the country in FTR). They are a very average rebounding team on both ends; don't turn the ball over much, but don't force many turnovers either.


UD keeps climbing up the offensive ranks, they are actually top 50 in the country in 3pt% made (but below average in the rate at which they attempt them). UD loves to get into the lane and attack, numbers would suggest that this could be another great spot for Mali to attack the basket and for Mani and DaRon to do their thing.


Torvik has UD as a 16.2 point favorite. A win is the most important thing, but improving those metrics is also huge. UD has been steadily climbing up the ranks analytically all season long. As one of the slower paced teams in the country, its harder for UD to truly blow out a team (from a pure points scored) perspective, but similar to the SJU game where they were favored by 6+ points, need to top that number and keep climbing in places like kenpom.


UD is currently 76th offensively and 35th defensively in KenPom. (66/27 in Torvik) (75/28 in BPI)

The above is what I typed a few weeks ago in the UMass game thread. Same story holds today; UD was great at limiting their open looks from deep and UMass had no answer. UD moved the ball great, made a bunch of wide open 3 pointers, beat them on the glass by 10, minimized turnovers to 9, etc... Need more of the same today.... If you hold out hope an at large is still possible, then winning by 20 again would provide a nice boost to the metric ratings. If you think UD needs to win the A10T to get in, then just winning and advancing is all that matters.


Would be nice to get out to a nice big lead like the prior game and offer up some rest for the guys down the stretch and hope that VCU and Richmond go to 6 OT

They typically don't force many turnovers, may have been more a GW issue than UMass causing them. Or perhaps with McCall canned they all decided that they actually care and are giving more effort? But yes, turnovers are UD's biggest bugaboo; we give the ball away way too much (followed closely by getting too many shots blocked, but that is primarily all a result of Mali, who seems to be figuring out that he has options when he drives and the lane gets clogged).

Only team to get an at large BID is LEAGUE CHAMP Davidson if they lose in final game.
NCAA considers A10 a minor/one bid league.

I get teh frustration, but we need at least 7-8 in the rotation to get through this. You can see Holmes is dragging for the past 5 minutes.
