I read on another board about (I think?) our first recruit of the Sheffeld-era.
Paige Vargas - Naperville, ILL - 5'8" Libero - plays club ball for Sports Performance - one of the top club programs in the country. This team had a Top 10 finish at the AAU Championships this summer in the 17 Open division - the toughest division for 17-year olds. They finished 9th. Very impressive!
Anyone know anymore???

Isn't that the same area the Adrianne and Robynn came from. Pipeline!!!!
Another 2009 recruit out of California - not sure how we got a line on her.

Two great gets! It doesn't hurt that Adrienne and Robynne had great careers at UD. There isn't anything wrong with taking advantage of some contacts that the previous coaches helped with :)
The setter write ups were really good. She said she will go anywhere to play at the highest level possible. Having setters who are over 6' is a nice advantage because you don't have a weakness in your blocking. Sounds great

Gotta love her height and ATTITUDE! (Work harder and push ourselves to get better.)
Since the coaching vacancy, it's been this transitional period where it seems like the program has been "treading water". We all know both the coaches and players are working hard -- but as fans it's been a "hard" off-season. It's nice to see things like new recruit commitments are getting "back to normal". It will be really nice in a month to have the season in full swing and Flyer volleyball in the middle of another National-run.

I agree with her desire to work hard, she should get along with Becky and most of the others. This is something else that impressed me, very mature for someone ready to play her senior year in high school. Of course having parents who have played a lot of vball helps a lot with this. Volleyball is different than a lot of sports because if you fail at a set or make a bad service return you will probably get another chance on the next point, so you have to reset quickly and not allow one mistake to cause another mistake on the following point.
Clancy concedes that mental and emotional skills on the volleyball court is as important as physical ability.
"There's a lot to playing setter, which is why I like playing the position," she said. "You have to stay focused, on every point, and you have to stay calm. In volleyball, that's so important.
"Otherwise, you can give up three or four points and you're out of the game."
I also like the fact she is a doubles player, you learn a lot playing doubles

I'm not sure how many hs players from California have played at Dayton. So in addition to the indoor vball skills she will bring to the team, I like she has YEARS of experience playing doubles sand vball. The following statement might not be 100% accurate... but I think just since KS came on the team is now looking at sand vball as a training tool. She'll be a great asset to this training and probably "teach" everyone how to get the most out of it.
Also, you might not know that the NCAA is considering adding sand volleyball as a sport for women. Some big-name D1 schools are supporting it -- like Nebraska. If it passes, I think it would start in 2010. If that happens, the current Flyer sophomore class would be seniors the first year it hits campuses. The "speculation" is indoor vball would be a fall sport and sand volleyball would be during the Spring season. It would probably "run" similar to golf and tennis for women -- which have two seasons. To add the sport, it's estimated to only cost around $9,000 per campus -- very small expense. That's suppose to be a 3-court set up so they could run team competitions with three matches going at the same time. Again, speculation is that they would run it like tennis -- your Team #1 would play their Team #1, Team #2's play, Team #3's play, ect.
Personally I think sand volleyball would be a HUGE boost to the entire sport of women's collegiate volleyball. You can't tell me men won't show up in droves to support this women's sport. It would not surprise me if in 5 years it's bigger than women's bball in attendance. And once they are fans of the players... they'll support the indoor game too.

Here's an article on Paige's high school team and its expectations for this coming season. You've gotta love that she is surrounded by a bunch of other D1 recruits. They'll be playing at a very high level and that is priceless experience. Her hs is Benet Academy, a Catholic school.

And of course a picture...

I wasn't willing to pay the subscription fee to read the article but Paige sounds like a keeper, and the fact she is a vocal leader on a very good team is a good sign.
