It was an amazing story.

Beyond the tragedy I was impressed with changes made by the men's team in the past two years. They are running a much faster offense. They have two tremendous middles and some undersized outside hitters. But, they are now setting a lot of '4' balls or even soft shoot sets. This gave the outside hitters a much better chance of having one on one blocking. If they had run the old style offense of high sets ('5' balls) they would have been crushed.

Many people do not realize that the first year-round men's national volleyball training started her in Dayton in 1977. Doug Beal, long time coach and current CEO of USA Volleyball, was the coach at that time. They moved the training to San Diego in 1981, mostly because the team consisted primarily of West Coast players who did not like the Ohio winters. US men won their first gold in 1984.
