Dayton @ Massachusetts Game Thread

Fudd 10-25-2010 02:47 PM

Per Steve81 on the A10 board:

http://www.basketballforum.com/atlan...-2011-a-2.html

Expecting us to move up from the lower to the middle tier, capable of beating any team in the league. We already have some very good young players and now a new group of five players. I hope Daryl Traynham can be a great PG and has a good freshman year. Javorn Farrell proved to be the most effective on both ends of the court with excellent Basketball IQ and leaving it all on the court. Javorn will probably see some time at the PG spot with Gary Correia a solid backup point guard and our new freshman. The shoot guard spot we have Anthony Gurley who needs to play every night like he did in Atlantic City. He has been criticized at times for poor shot selection and defense. Jesse Morgan becomes eligible around Christmas time and should challenge for minutes. Freedie Riley is a streaky shooter during his freshman year and his defense improved but has a long way to go. I’m hoping Freddie continues to improve. Terrell Vinson is a small PF with lots of talent and hoping he shines next year. We have lots of forwards. Sampson Carter had a good freshman year and hope like Terrell gets bigger and stronger for next year. Matt Hill was a surprise in that he played limited minutes and did OK but expect his limited minutes to shrink. New players Maxie, David and Raphael will be challenging for minutes and like David Laury size. I heard hints that Raphael can be a little like Marcus Camby. That he is thin, agile and can shoot all the way out to the three point line. Our big man Sean Carter runs the court well and will be very good next year improving his scoring and rebounding. I love Big City Bailey, but see him in a limited role with all the new talent.

OK here is the biggest question mark, will the coaching staff be able to decide and communicate the players roles. It took way too long, the last three weeks of the season to settle down on a consistent player rotation.

We lose Ricky Harris and walk on Lex Mongo.

New Players for next year.

Daryl Traynham could be the answer to a solid PG at 5’ 9” and 160 lbs.
http://insider.espn.go.com/ncb/recru...6season%3d2010

Jesse Morgan is a highly rated SG at 6’ 5” and 175 lbs.
http://insider.espn.go.com/ncb/recru...6season%3d2010

Now a Trio of Forwards: Raphael Putney red shirted this year is a PF at 6’ 9” and 180 lbs.
http://insider.espn.go.com/ncb/recru...6season%3d2009

Maxie Esho is graded fairly high and is a PF at 6’ 7” and 195 lbs.
http://insider.espn.go.com/ncb/recru...6season%3d2010

David Laury has reportedly given a verbal yesterday and had originally committed to WKY and then IONA. He is a PF at 6’ 8” and 220lbs. He is rated a little lower and is a bit older and ready to play.

Per WH of the A10 board:

http://www.basketballforum.com/atlan...achusetts.html

MASSACHUSETTS

The key to the Minutemen's success is to get better point guard play (13th in the A-10 in assists); take higher percentage shots and make more of them (40.2% FG, 13th in the A-10; 30.1% 3PG, 11th); make better decisions at every spot on the floor (12th in turnover margin); play better defense, especially on the perimeter (37% 3pg defense was the worst in the league); and find another go-to scorer to replace Ricky Harris.

Quite a list, all right, but not surprising for a struggling second-year coach who was managing a team filled mostly with freshmen and transfers. Some of the problems can be fixed simply through experience. Older players tend to shoot a higher percentage and take better care of the ball, particularly when they've been together for a few years. Defense is about will and effort, however, and there will be no excuses this season if Kellogg can't coax his players to supply more of each.

The jury is still out on Kellogg as a head coach. He has shown an excellent ability to recruit high-level players and this is the year we should start to see some marked progress. Umass has a heralded sophomore class and several potential stars with Terrell Vinson inside and Freddie Riley outside. Javorn Farrell is a classic glue player with toughness and defensive lockdown ability. THe Minutemen has lots of size and athleticism and were one of the best rebounding teams in the league by season's end. A coach like Majerus or Dunphy could squeeze nine or ten wins out of this talent, but Kellogg has yet to show that he's a legit Division 1 coach - big wins over Kansas and Memphis nothwitstanding.

Kellogg is certainly primed to get off to a good start with a "training wheels" schedule. UMass does not leave New England a single time during the nonconference slate.

NONCONFERENCE SCHEDULE

W - RIDER
W - SACRED HEART
L - NEW MEXICO STATE (Springfield Tip-off Classic)
W - TCU (Springfield Tip-off Classic)
W - AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL
L - BC (Boston Garden)
w - HOLY CROSS
L - At Quinipiac
W - MAINE
L - SETON HALL
W - CENTRAL FLORIDA
W - BOSTON UNIVERSITY
W - At Central Conn. State

NONCONFERENCE RECORD: 9-4.

The Minutemen should get a decent test to start the season from a less talented but experienced Rider team capable of pulling an upset. Sacred Heart is the next sacrificial lamb.

UMass head to nearby Springfield for a pair of winnable games, but I call for a split. New Mexico State lost a terrific backcourt to graduation, but the team had a summer trip to Canada and there's plenty of talent here. TCU is still in rebuiding mode. Hard for me to see two teams from the West winning both games vs. their New England host.

After dusting off American International, UMass heads to Boston for a clash with BC. The Minutemen clearly have more talent, but BC has the better coach. Should be a win, but I play it safe. Next is a rebuilding Holy Cross, which fired its first-year coach after a losing season. Should be a relatively easy win.

Quinnipiac, which won 20-plus games last season, has one of the best post players no one has heard of in Justin Rutty. UMass is definitely more talented, and fans would hate to lose to coach Tom Moore (a onetime candidate for the UMass job), but it's a road game and the Q faithful will be all fired up.

Umass returns home for four straight games. Maine returns most starters from a 19-win team and cannot be taken lightly. Seton Hall has one of its better teams in recent years, but UMass really needs this game. I just can't imagine this team going through its noncon slate with fewer than three losses, however. It reflects my lack of faith in Kellogg.

Central Florida returns all five starters and hired away's Marshall's fine young coach. This could be an upset, especially if UMass beats Hall the game before, but home cooking prevails. Ditto in a win over a solid BU team. Unfortunately the Terriers will be breaking in new guards, making them susceptible to an athletic UMass attack. The Minutemen head an hour or so south to play a CCSU team that has given UMass trouble every now and then. That shouldnt happen this time. UMass has the advantage at every position on the court.

BONUS A-10 PREDICTION: 6-10 (15-14 overall)

The Minutemen pair up with Rhode Island, LaSalle and St. Joseph's. Last year the team went 3-3 vs. these teams. I see the same record this year. UMass also goes on the road at Xavier, Charlotte, St Bonaventure, St. Louis and Fordham. There might be only one win in that bunch.

At first I pegged UMass for an 8-8 record, but ultimately I lowballed my alma mater because of doubts about Kellogg. He still has a lot to prove - and I hope he proves me wrong.

frisco flyer 01-09-2011 01:29 PM

We need to play well today and come back to Dayton with a W and a 2-0 road record to start A-10 play. The Minutemen seem ripe for the picking with key players out with injury and suspension. Defense will be key, because apparently they will be playing without a true point guard. Nothing can be taken for granted, but if we play the way we have been playing lately, this game is ours.

Go Flyers!

Swampy Meadows 01-09-2011 01:56 PM

Matt Schwade at FlyerHoops.net says that PG Gary Correia is dressed and will play. He had missed 3 games with a stomach ailment.

MD Flyer Pride 01-09-2011 01:58 PM

Another big one. Let's Go Flyers!

jack72 01-09-2011 02:00 PM

This should be our kind of game against a team that runs and will not hold the ball. If we shoot the ball we will win by 15.

C-time 01-09-2011 02:02 PM

Wow is that place empty or not.

jcubspoe 01-09-2011 02:03 PM

Oh fun....Steve Wolf announcing.

CW avg. 15 and 12 in the last 3 games. We need that again from him.

It still looks pretty empty.

tlangs98 01-09-2011 02:09 PM

got lucky on that foul....CW reached in but they gave it to DS

jcubspoe 01-09-2011 02:09 PM

I wish Searcy had actually gained one pound in 4 years here.....he can't even draw fouls when he's wide open.

jcubspoe 01-09-2011 02:09 PM

OMG....awful call on CW.

jcubspoe 01-09-2011 02:11 PM

Racking up fouls here.....

TommyGola 01-09-2011 02:12 PM

Did anyone else lose Larry and Bucky? Any live streaming? I can't find any.

cintibUD 01-09-2011 02:13 PM

I lost WHIO but it's back now - at commercials - are they at the 16 min timeout?

Viperstick 01-09-2011 02:13 PM

Nice of the DDN to show the game as an 8:00 PM start

MikeF 01-09-2011 02:13 PM

Yep, I lost them in the online feed. Now it's a bunch of WHIO Internet commercials.

Yes, TV timeout.

Whio back on now

Whio back on.

Can anyone find a video stream

jcubspoe 01-09-2011 02:16 PM

They are packing it in .....big time.

Viperstick 01-09-2011 02:17 PM

Wright took a 3...must be a pro scout there

TCEagleAnnouncer 01-09-2011 02:17 PM

I would be happy if CW didn't take another 3 all year

frisco flyer 01-09-2011 02:18 PM

Not handling the zone well so far.

jcubspoe 01-09-2011 02:18 PM

Well, gonna be tough now...CW with his second...

Umass won't even guard us outside the paint.

Chris R 01-09-2011 02:18 PM

CW charge. Like clockwork.

Viperstick 01-09-2011 02:19 PM

2 fouls on Wright--13 to go in the half

tlangs98 01-09-2011 02:19 PM

take the 6 foot J when it's there Chris...

jcubspoe 01-09-2011 02:19 PM

For the record, that wont even be close to a charge call in the NBA (not that I'm saying CW is an NBA player).

jcubspoe 01-09-2011 02:21 PM

what kind of call was that on DS???? Bull crap!!!!! God, let them play

Viperstick 01-09-2011 02:22 PM

Need a t/o

cj 01-09-2011 02:22 PM

15 7 Umass 11.27 left

udx2 01-09-2011 02:22 PM

15 - 7 UMass.

jcubspoe 01-09-2011 02:23 PM

No foul there on Benson....

well, refs took us right out of this game.

Down 8 to a god awful team.

Flyer_Tom 01-09-2011 02:23 PM

I rewound and watched that DS call 5 times...gonna be a long game if the calls keep up like that.

masonflyer 01-09-2011 02:23 PM

Our post players are way beyond pathetic.

there was similiar contact on Benson's missed dunk....at least the contact on Benson had an effect on the play.

TCEagleAnnouncer 01-09-2011 02:24 PM

I really hope we don't try to blame the officials for this game. We are playing like crap right now, thats not the officials' fault.

cintibUD 01-09-2011 02:24 PM

FYI - They are repeating the UD special on FSN right now. Never turned it off after the UC-Nova game and it's just starting now.

Viperstick 01-09-2011 02:26 PM

Good D by Kavs

jcubspoe 01-09-2011 02:26 PM

We just need to keep this close til CW gets in!!

OMG!!!

No foul on that PW drive!!!! You could hear the contact. God these refs don't even deserve a job.

Flyer_Tom 01-09-2011 02:27 PM

Wow..i could HEAR PW get fouled on that drive and no call. Wish we could get calls like this at home.

jcubspoe 01-09-2011 02:28 PM

You can't tell me refs don't impact a game....they call a ticky tack foul on DS that had no affect on the play and Benson and PW, especially PW, get hammered and no call??? C'mon.

frisco flyer 01-09-2011 02:33 PM

CW's abscence is being felt on the boards. These guys are getting way too many second chances.

Sea Bass 01-09-2011 02:33 PM

UMass up 19-14, Flyers flat as a pancake

walkon 01-09-2011 02:33 PM

Anyone find a video feed on the internet ?

Viperstick 01-09-2011 02:35 PM

Nice team D. Shot clock violation--UD ball

Sea Bass 01-09-2011 02:35 PM

Umass up by 10 boards.

jcubspoe 01-09-2011 02:35 PM

We might not score the 19 we scored against UC.

Viperstick 01-09-2011 02:36 PM

Who said Dayton is a high scoring team?!?!

jcubspoe 01-09-2011 02:37 PM

20-14. Not good at all. Gonna be hard to come back from any sort of deficit when you can't score points.

Flyer_Tom 01-09-2011 02:37 PM

Had a feeling this was going to be one of those days a few minutes ago when they finally called a block on UMass but it in turn negated the 3 CJ hit on the kick out.

Sea Bass 01-09-2011 02:38 PM

staten was standing ibounds, bad call

jcubspoe 01-09-2011 02:39 PM

Thank God JS brought his jump shot.

Flyer_Tom 01-09-2011 02:39 PM

Does basketball have the same rule as footbal in that you cant be the first to touch it coming from out of bounds? If not that was ANOTHER awful call.

Viperstick 01-09-2011 02:39 PM

Nice attack by Spearman, but I think he should have passed

Thank God for Staten.

jcubspoe 01-09-2011 02:41 PM

Somehow we only down 3 with the ball.

Viperstick 01-09-2011 02:41 PM

WHat the F*&^%^ was that LUke?!

jcubspoe 01-09-2011 02:41 PM

Well as bad as we're playing and only down 3 and no CW, I'll take it.

ParkerUD09 01-09-2011 02:42 PM

LUUUUUUUUUUUKE needs to stop shooting the ****ing ball

Chris R 01-09-2011 02:42 PM

Perfect example of not using basketball IQ. Spearman driving to the hoop 3 on 1 advantage and he has CJ for an easy shuffle pass who is a 90% foul shooter, knowing Spearman himself is a 50% foul shooter. Spearman goes one of two, and it costs us a point. In this game, a point is a lot.

You need to recognize these things when trying to convert at the rim. Know your team strengths and weaknesses.

No basketball doesn't have that rule...you just have to establish yourself in bounds...which Staten did.

Luke needs to start shooting the ball from the same zip code as the hoop.

TommyGola 01-09-2011 02:43 PM

Somebody has been coaching Luke about a "quick release." It is so quick now that he is all out of sync. It is painful to watch a player struggle.

UD -12 on the glass

Viperstick 01-09-2011 02:45 PM

Maybe the Flyers read the DDN and thought the game started at 8:00 PM.

jcubspoe 01-09-2011 02:45 PM

Another terrible call on us...just terrible. That should have been a jump ball.

jcubspoe 01-09-2011 02:47 PM

We look terrible...can't hit 3's or FT's this game....

frisco flyer 01-09-2011 02:47 PM

Those guys are playing zone and still killing us on the board. We can't get CW back in this game fast enough!

Viperstick 01-09-2011 02:47 PM

In other news...SLU only down 2 to Temple.

The Apacolypse is upon us...

TCEagleAnnouncer 01-09-2011 02:47 PM

It's hard to blame the refs when you have 18 points with 1:40 to go in the first half and down 12 on the boards

jcubspoe 01-09-2011 02:48 PM

Well ****...even our 85% ft shooter can't make em....

I'm not blaming the refs for this...I'm just saying...call it both ways. You can't call a foul on DS and not when Benson or Williams get hacked and you can actually hear it.

Viperstick 01-09-2011 02:50 PM

That was a foul on us that didn't get called.

jcubspoe 01-09-2011 02:51 PM

It's games like this that we don't even look like a CBI team......we scored less points then we did in the first half of the UC game.

Pitiful performance, just pitiful

Viperstick 01-09-2011 02:51 PM

The only good part of that half was that UMASS missed their final shot at the buzzer.

FlyerFanatic08 01-09-2011 02:53 PM

UMASS in zone most that half?

C-time 01-09-2011 02:54 PM

Its a miracle UD is only down 26-18. A just pitiful half of basketball. Pitiful rebounding, FT shooting, and complete lack of offense. At least there are 20 minutes to play and I don't think we can play much worse.

dnutz77 01-09-2011 02:54 PM

zone

The perfect recipe to beat UD....not sure why every team that UD plays doesn't run a zone. UD under BG has never been a good zone team. And in the UMASS M2M, they are packing it inside so UD can't penetrate and/or get offensive rebounds.

udx2 01-09-2011 02:55 PM

The bad = fouls, CW sitting, lack of rebounding, slow, ugly, painful to watch game.

The good = Staten, CW will be back in 2nd half, we can come back from 8 down.

AdamtheFlyer 01-09-2011 02:55 PM

This team still has serious coaching issues. Never prepared to play a full 40 on the road. 8 years later and still look lost against even rudimentary zone defenses.

Need a minor miracle to win this one.

masonflyer 01-09-2011 02:57 PM

Can someone listening to Bucky confirm this? I believe that our 4 post players have a combined 1 point, no rebounds, assists, or steals, and a bunch of fouls. Has Bucky given the halftime stats yet?

DS is a ghost. Worst half of Flyer hoops so far this year? If not, can't be too far behind.

MD Flyer Pride 01-09-2011 03:01 PM

We'll need another road comeback.

With CW on the bench for most of the half, it could be worse.

This UMass team is really not that good. Not that we are playing that well, either.

We just need to get CW back on track, be patient on offense and play solid D. We should be OK. :worried:

Alberto Strasse 01-09-2011 03:02 PM

BG's Disrespect for CW

BG's disrespect for CW is so obvious. If BG really thought CW was an A-10 POY candidate do you think he would hold him to the "two foul rule" and let him miss 16 minutes of the first half?

Bucky and Larry mentioned that the statistics seemed behind. According to ESPN.com's box score, Wright has 2, Kavanaugh has 1, and that's it from those two and Searcy and Benson. It looks like they have 2 rebounds among the four of them.

Chris R 01-09-2011 03:03 PM

Kavs, Searcy, Benson = 0 rebounds.

I gotta put a lot of this on CW though. He has to know when he has one foul and to keep himself on the court. Those offensive charges from the top of the key should be few and far between by now. Without him on the court it changes everything we are.

Swampy Meadows 01-09-2011 03:04 PM

If UD follows the "fall behind in the first half and then come stroming back in the second" script that they have used for most games this season we should be okay. If not, we're screwed.

I wasn't counting Wright - meant between, Devin, Josh, Kavs, and Luke. Looks like Luke had 2 rebounds but I'm not counting the one that fell into his hands at the buzzer.
