Wright St playing Miami this year. Be cool to see UD/WSU/XU/Miami all play in a Gem

Gem City Holiday classic. I bet the tv rating would blow up and the arena would sell out for a round robin

Perhaps call it the Donoher /Underhill Gem City Classic and make a trophy to rotate?

Get X to buy in and I am all for it, otherwise it is a waste of time and RPI.

ClaytonFlyerFan 08-21-2018 03:41 PM

The arena would sell out for many other teams as well, that will not kill our RPI.

Outside of southwest Ohio and UD alumni living around the country, no one would give two cents to watch this on TV.

No thanks to your idea. I thought everyone on this board wanted our Flyers to be moving forward, not backwards?

frisco flyer 08-21-2018 03:43 PM

I would rather see OSU, UC, X and UD in some kind of an early season Buckeye State grudge match.

Chris R 08-21-2018 03:49 PM

On ESPN or Big10 Network (can't remember which) about 15min ago they were talking about OSU opening up UCs renovated arena and how the game took years to happen. Praised Holtmann for playing UC and then mentioned the interest that would generate from a Crossroads Classic with OSU, UC, XU, and UD.

AH! NO!

What TV ratings? WHIO Channel 7 maybe .... every other broadcast station would play reruns of Who Love's Lucy. For you youngin' that's a 50's TV show on Me TV or whatever they call the channel where you live.

Another thing why the hell would X play to get a trophy named after DD or the shop lifter Underhill?

Come on ya gotta be more creative than that to post such a statement!

Last time I looked we do pretty well fillin the Arena without those other teams.

bcross 08-21-2018 03:58 PM

996 paid to watch WSU/Miami at Millet last season.

This was being discussed awhile back. What ever happened to it?

hawkoooo 08-21-2018 04:15 PM

If you're going to do this it needs to be exciting. I think it should be 6 schools, adding Northern Kentucky. Do a 6-team double-elimination SEEDED tournament, based on last year's RPI finish. For example:

This year X would be a 1 seed and would play the winner of NKU (4) and Dayton (5).

UC would be the 2 seed and would play the winner of WSU (3) and Miami (6).

This would be extremely unique. There are tons of college hoops tournaments, but none have anything close to this format.

I even clicked the link, as I really thought you had left a number off the front end of the 996 (sorry for doubting you)

Why does anyone ever want to play Miami again, or WSU?

UD had more than 996 fans at Millett Hall when we used to play there, at least I think we did, sure sounded like it, but with the crappy lighting was hard to see for sure.

Those are the teams you need to make this battle work.

RPI's in ( )

I get the overall sentiment that other than UC (6), X (4), and OSU (16), the rest of the teams don't move the schedule forward.

But it's all relative to who you take off the schedule.

You can put WSU (98) and Miami (170) in for North Florida (218) Purdue Fort Wayne (219), Detroit Mercy (318), or Presbyterian (319) and the schedule isn't any worse (It's actually better) - but it is more interesting. I would be a lot more excited about a game like that.

Heck, ANY Ohio school would be more fun and most are an upgrade to those teams. Toledo (75), Kent State (154), Bowling Green (195), and Ohio (206).

Then you have Akron (226), Cleveland St (282), Youngstown St (325). But even those schools really aren't worse than the other guys on our schedule - it's an even swap - which I would still prefer to play another Ohio school.

Of course, we were 152 - so Wright State might be asking if they are willing to hurt their schedule by playing us...

Sounds like it's dead from Ohio State going to a 20 game schedule in Big 10 play

So, the annual Gem City Jam thread rears its ugly head, but this time wearing a mask.

I understand the thought process here about swapping one for another, but the concept was to really get great TV ratings and pack the Arena (as if there is a problem here) you would want to schedule a tournament as a GEM CITY style jam except who cares if it's WS, Miami or Purdue Fort Wayne, Presbyterian or Little Sisters of the Poor from East Hackensack NJ. OK so maybe we would get TV ratings and a sold out Arena if '5 Little Sisters and the Poor were on the floor against our team.

Its a non issue looking for a solution.

Take your pick the masked man is a) Bat Man [The Dark Knight], b) The Man in the Green Mask, or c) The Lone Ranger.

:outtahere:

Heck, it could even be Rudy, he wears sorta mask or is it goggles? Hummmmm

Yeah, I'm not aligned with needing a solution for TV ratings and attendance. But I would have a lot more fun playing some of the other Ohio schools.

And while we all sit here saying OSU, X, and UC are afraid to play us, I think the other Ohio schools have a right to say the same about us. I would love to play against those schools. If nothing else it might help our brand among Ohio recruits.

If memory serves, we have played quite a few of the Ohio based MAC schools

We played Akron and Ohio University just last year, although the latter was in that Charleston tourney.

Beatty Town Coach 08-21-2018 09:29 PM

What happened to it?? Oh my Lord, you are killing me...too funny.

Personally I am for all of above, both scenarios; which is unusual because I am typically against everything.

Comparatively speaking one of the two round Robin scenarios is much more likely than the other...one has three of the schools in favor; and the other scenario has only one school in favor...just keeping it real.

Once again Beatty cannot resist or ignore reality. You can wipe the TOSU, UC, XU playing dayton in a double header right-out of your current minds. The only way that happens is if UD makes another very deep run into NCAA tournament; and it might take a Final four, and potentially a national title.

The one exception to this would be if Ohio state played UD before or after the Crosstown Shootout.

Answer me this: if Ohio state agreed to a Round Robin invloving UD, and would play OSU the second year, but indicated that OSU would play Cleveland State the first year, and Dayton would play Wright State in the other half of year one double header, and both years played at Nationwide (not OSU's homecourt) or Gund Arena (not Cleveland State's home arena). Would UD accept this arrangement?

MAC/Ohio:

Akron - 2010
Ball State - 2010
Bowling Green - 2014
Buffalo - 2011
Central Michigan - 2013
Cincinnati - 2010
Cleveland State - 2008
Eastern Michigan - 2014
Kent State - 1998
Marshall - 2008
Miami OH - 2015
Northern Illinois - 2012
Ohio State - 2014 (1988)
Toledo - 2009
Western Michigan - 1972
Wright State - 1997
Xavier - 2015 (2013)

UDGutter2 08-22-2018 04:37 AM

IIRC Dayton played a buy game against Towson St. that had higher attendance than the Wright State game in 1997.

Edit, I did not recall correctly, Murray St drew just 300 fewer fans, and NE Louisiana drew 1,000 fewer fans.

The difference between Wright State and Miami and all the rest of the Ohio/MAC schools is that the others are accepting but games to come to the Arena.

Unfortunately, Dayton Daily News is wrong. (I know, shocking.) (Well, I guess I can't fault DDN too much ... the media guide doesn't list the 4 games since 1948 UD/YSU played in the team section. Interestingly, back in the 13-14 guide, they list UD's record against YSU as 5-4, but only show the 5 games from 1940 to 1948. In the 17-18 guide, they just changed the record to 2-3.)

Last time UD played Youngstown State was December 12th, 1983, winning 73-64 in front of 8,316 fans.

As always, Figgie is the man

Just curious King Figgie, who had the better plus / minus in this game. Roosevelt Chapman, Larry Schellenberg, or Ted Harris?

Well, it probably wasn't Ted Harris, who averaged 6 minutes a game.

Schellenberg averaged 32 minutes a game that year and Chapman averaged 37 minutes a game. And with Chapman being the scorer on the team, he was probably on the bench while we lost a few points, so he must have had higher than a +9.

But, there was no play-by-play provided to Prince Figgie in 1983, therefore, I cannot give you an accurate account. :)

OR - we could think bigger and look at a national Catholic tournament with UD - ND - Georgetown - Villanova - X - Gonzaga - SLU - St. Joes. All games played in a open air court at the Vatican. The pope watches from his balcony. Swiss guards provide security, etc. As for a name, obviously it's "The Holy War"

Don't tell me day drinking is not productive!!

bigred 08-22-2018 08:48 PM

Ohio schools we have played more often than Wright St.:

Antioch
Baldwin Wallace
Capital
Denison
John Carroll
Muskingum
Ohio Wesleyan
Otterbein
Wilmington
Wittenberg

Wright State is no more of a rivalry than any of the above teams. If we played Wright State, the attendance and TV audience would be roughly the same as if we played any of the above teams.

ND is not a Catholic School as it worships at the Church of the Almighty Dollar.

Maybe we could add Sinclair also. The winner would be well positioned for a CBI invite.
