Golden #5 Big Steve Award - LaSalle

Senior Night is supposed to be exciting, invigorating and a celebration of those who have given us so much excitement and pleasure over the past 3-4 seasons. Do you remember the opening play when Charles Little was a senior...the tip - pass - pick - ally-oop dunk? That was probably my favorite play of all time...or the numerous post-game celebrations where the team ran into the stands for pics and high-fives? Yeah...me, too.

But last night wasn't like that. In fact, except for Obi's dunks, it was a 1st half snoozer...and the 2nd half started out the same way. Then the defense took over and Josh turned into a beast, putting up 16 of his 18 points, including what had to be a very satisfying dunk over LaSalle's 7'2" center.

Enough with the golden praise King Rollo! It's time to vote for the Golden #5 Award...RIP my royal friend! You will never be forgotten.

King Rollo the What-Could-Have-Been....OUT!

Obi in the first half and Josh in the 2nd.

This coulda been a thought provoking decision but NOPE IT WASN'T!!!!

Enough said. :D

Wow, no love yet for either of my two leading candidates. In both the first half as well as the second half, when Cohill and Landers entered the game bringing energy and toughness, LaSalle quit scoring, as evidenced by their team leading +40 on the night. The next best +/- being Crutch with +20.

But yes, Josh got my vote for sentimental reasons. Honorable mention to Westerfield.

Cheerleader of the game- Obi. Watching his smile and enthusiasm on the bench as Josh hit a three, followed by Jack and his three. Awesome team mate and seems like a great kid.

The real MVP should be the Queen of the Rollo household whom I had the honor to meet last night. I mean, look what she has to put up with at home!

Cunningham was not too happy 3/4 of the way through the game; as he was bickering with Mikesell and frustrated with others for not passing the ball to him in the post. And I agree he was right to be aggravated; I would have been. But wow what a great finish Cunningham had. That may or may not be his las game at UD Arena, we shall see.

Voted for Westerfield, he certainly deserves it; and frankly I always assumed UD could use him as an occasional three point specialist. Jack Westerfiled made an awesome split the defenders pass to Tobbin who should have given Westerfield an assist, but had to settle for free throws.

Thank you to both Seniors, it has been a real pleasure watching you both. Hopefully you both have a lot more games left as Dayton Flyers. Best Wishes; and GO FLYERS!

*Yes, I'm agreeing with Sir Clayton

I voted for Cunningham but am glad that Cohill is picking up votes. He gave us some much needed offense at a crucial time and along with Sir Trey, filled in brilliantly on both ends of the court*.

The question was "who would big Steve be most proud of" something tells me Big Steve would have been as big a cheerleader as Obi was for Westerfield's 3 pointer to close the game.

Player of the game - Landers, effort changed on a dime once he came in, could say the same for Cohill as well.

It was great to see Josh close out the game, would like to see him demand the ball earlier in the game and Crutch force the action inside as well.

flyerfanatic86 03-07-2019 09:30 AM

I voted for Crutcher because it was nice to finally have a guard getting rebounds, and for awhile he was on triple double watch. Cohill also played more stellar defense.

I was glad that Josh was able to salvage his senior night, but a lot of those points came when the game was no longer in doubt so I dinged him for that. I still think his dunk was the best of the night (sorry Obi, but Josh put a guy on a poster).

sheg 03-07-2019 09:37 AM

Crutcher, Toppin, Mikesell, Cunningham, Landers, and Cohill all stood out for various reasons. I gave it to the senior for the feels.

King, the Westerfield in italics is more evidence of poll bias by you instructor. Way to stay in good with the Campi.

Westerfield is in italics on your computer because you voted for him...not because the King was trying to influence the election. I'm a King, not a Clinton.

Beatty Town Coach 03-07-2019 01:02 PM

I never new/realized that about the italics. However, the "C's" think they are kings. More like royal bitties!

Now, if only I could read an A10 bracket well enough to know that neither the 2 or 3 seed will face the one seed in the semis...see mr. so called feedback.

SLUFLYER 03-07-2019 01:16 PM

Crutcher remains inconsistent with his decisions/passing, but I was EXTREMELY impressed with how he crashed the boards the last night. As I was watching the game, I recall thinking several times about how he was very active going for AND securing rebounds.

Even then, I was shocked that I saw in the box score he had 12 rebounds. Great EFFORT Crutch!!

jack72 03-07-2019 01:28 PM

Had to vote for Josh, because it was senior night. Hats off to Obi, Mikesell and Cohill, who played well. And Crutcher because he is in a slump, but still played most of the minutes and contributed in some intangibles like no one else last night. I cussed Crutcher most of the night, but only because my expectations are high.

I wish everyone would play defense like Cohill, but no one is even close.

ruechalgrin 03-07-2019 02:13 PM

Cohill, Cohill, Cohill. He changed the game with defensive intensity. Cohill and Trey had best +/- for the game.

TXFlyerFan 03-07-2019 03:53 PM

Voted Cohill. He earned every minute he got last night.

Flyer2 03-07-2019 06:08 PM

I don’t remember if other team members were wearing red Big Steve shirts but Josh was. Maybe Big Steve gave Josh a kick in the butt to make him proud and it was great that Josh honored him.

T-Bone 84 03-07-2019 06:30 PM

Wanted to vote for Westerfield on the basis of the 3 that capped the scoring, but went for Josh instead. When he caught fire, the game went from a win to a “no-doubt” rout. And props for representing Big Steve as well, on what would have been his Senior Night as well. Dude knows what’s important.

Thanks, Seniors, and to the whole team. You’ve put a strong foundation in place, that the program can build on. I doff my Columbia Blue newsboy hat in your direction.

Can we talk about how terrible La Salle was lol, never have I seen such horrible shot selection in any basketball game in my life. But Josh wins player of the game for far more than just sentimental reasons, as always when we actually give him the ball he showed that he is our best player and unquestioned leader. That tribute to Big Steve both on his sneakers and on his shirt was just icing on the cake and why I will miss him so much and why he will always be one of my favorite flyers.

Some on here talk about how terrible Lasalle is, but forget to mention that they have 7 A10 wins, just beat Davidson by double digits and hadn’t lost a conference game by more than 13 points. I’d say the Flyers D had a lot to do with holding down Lasalle. They got absolutely nothing inside all game.

CvilleFlyer 03-07-2019 11:29 PM

I voted for Cunningham. Had to give credit where credit is due! I did not get to attend the game due to a prior commitment but listened on the radio. Larry and Bucky stated that Josh was scoring points at a furious pace in the last 7 minutes thanks to some unselfish passing by Cohill and others!

I would guess the last 5-6 games when Josh’s numbers have dropped that something was happening outside of Josh’s talent to impact his stats. Maybe a nagging injury. Maybe defenses found new ways to take him out. Maybe our game plans were to get the ball to others. Maybe others hadn’t figured out how and where to get Josh the ball if defenses had changed, etc.

Having Josh go off in those last 7 minutes didn’t get my vote for this game (Crutch got it), but it could be huge for the rest of the season. Whatever was at issue the last 5-6 games seemed to have been solved in this last 7 minutes and if we carry that forward into the A10, we will be hard to beat.

Figgie123 03-08-2019 08:29 AM

I'll be that one person.

Josh got those points because La Salle was doing a full court press and the Flyers finally figured out how to throw over, and to the open guy and get the ball down there to Josh. La Salle barely attempted to run back after the press was broken, and he was able to clean up and make it to 18 points.

From the 5:06 mark of the second half until Josh checks out at 00:51, Josh gets 2 jumpers, a dunk, a 3ptr and 4 free throws, for 13 points. During that same time, Cohill hits 2 free throws, Crutcher misses a jumper, Cohill misses a 3ptr, and Trey hits a jumper. The 4 shots by Cunningham from the field occurred 10 seconds, 9 seconds, 18 seconds and 8 seconds after a La Salle shot.

Sure, it was nice to see, but La Salle wasn't very diligent in their press. I'm glad to see that the Flyers had the ability to beat the press this way, and hope they can find a way to remember that during these last few remaining games of the year. Over the press, quick passes, dish to Josh.
