Go Longform

BEVERLY HILLS (MI) -- On my recent flight to/from Los Angeles I couldn’t find any titles of books on our Kindle Reader that piqued my interest. I’m not a big fiction fan, preferring to read about current events or biographies of people I find intriguing. I decided to download a bunch of longform articles from various publications on a host of different subjects. Reading -- and a lot of it -- was the secret behind the success of Jeopardy whiz James Holzhauer, altho I recall him saying that he spends a good deal of time in the Children’s section at the library.

To me a good longform article doesn’t necessarily have to be about a topic that I am particularly interested in or passionate about. As long as the piece is well written and I come away from it with a new understanding of the subject matter, I’ll invest the time.

The following are a few longform articles you may find of interest like I did:

From Vanity Fair: Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, The Ultimate Preview

https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood...ory?verso=true

This one can be slightly spoilerish, so if you don’t want any pre-release surprises before Episode 9 premieres on December 20th, you might want to pass. The behind-the-scenes pictures are fascinating, as is the backstory on the development of the trilogy of trilogies.

From The New Yorker: Jackie MacMullan Is the Great Chronicler of Basketball’s Golden Age

https://www.newyorker.com/culture/th...lls-golden-age

Growing up in Boston, I inherited my addiction to the Sports section of The Boston Globe from my Dad. When I left home to attend UD, my Mother used to save up the Sunday Sports sections and mail them to me. Bob Ryan, Peter Gammons, Will McDonough, Leigh Montville and company formed a Murders Row of ink-stained super scribes. And then there was Jackie. To become the preeminent NBA writer in the land (right up there with UD grad Steve Bulpett at The Boston Herald) in an age when women didn’t play professional sports, let alone write about them is truly amazing.

From The New Yorker: The Day the Dinosaurs Died

https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2...dinosaurs-died

The compelling story of Paleontology grad student Robert DePalma and his incredible discovery in the middle-of-nowhere North Dakota, at the aptly named Hell Creek site. DePalma was able to find entire specimens of dinosaurs preserved intact as they were when The Big One hit some 60 million years ago. As the article states: In one fell swoop, DePalma may have filled in the gap in the fossil record.

From The Ringer: ‘The Matrix’ Changed Everything, but the Little Details Made It Even Greater

https://www.theringer.com/movies/201...wskis-brothers

Not the lengthiest longform article you will ever read, but if you are like me and feel compelled to stop when your TV remote scrolls past one of The Matrix trilogy flicks on the listings, this is a must-read. The article explains a couple dozen small details that you may have missed or never even noticed until now.

From Huffington Post: Jerry and Marge Go Large

https://highline.huffingtonpost.com/...lotto-winners/

The unbelievable story of a regular guy named Jerry Selbee from right here in Michigan who figured out a way to legally beat a lottery game called Winfall, where the prize money would “roll down” if no one won for several weeks in a row. Selbee ended up creating a corporation that allowed family and friends to share in his guaranteed winnings. They netted $7.75 million in profit before taxes, distributed among the players in GS Investment Strategies LLC.

From The Cut: The Stolen Kids of Sarah Lawrence

https://www.thecut.com/2019/04/larry...201.1553086869

What happened to the group of bright college students who fell under the sway of a classmate’s father? A whole bunch of weird sh*t, that’s what.

From The Indy Star: The mobster in our midst

https://www.indystar.com/in-depth/ne...is/3139068002/

John Franzese Jr. helped send his father, notorious Colombo family mobster Sonny Franzese, to prison. Then he turned up in Indianapolis.

Naturally, there is a Twitter site where you can post and find the latest in longform lit:

That’s it “From the Swamp.”
