In Search of Darrell Davis

HARPER WOODS (MI) -- “From the Swamp” is coming to you from Harper Woods HS, site of the 19th annual Motor City Round Ball Classic. The late Saturday afternoon matchup in this five day hoopfest pits Chicago Orr HS -- rated #6 in the state of Illinois -- vs. the Detroit Douglass Academy Hurricanes and UD signee Darrell Davis.

“FTS” attended the MCRBC three years ago when it was held at Detroit Country Day, a mere mile down the road from my house and featured another UD commit, Percy Gibson who ended up following Cornell Mann to Iowa State after BG bailed. Here is my report on that tilt:

Chicago Orr doesn’t have a marquee talent on their roster this year but recently added transfers Isaiah Hayes and Sire Carroll to three talented guys from its fourth-place finish in Class 3A last season in Marlon Jones, Tyquone Greer and Louis Adams Jr. Meanwhile, our guy Double D is paired with Cleveland State signee Terrell Hayes and Daavi Bradley, who tallied 17 markers and 9 boards in a victory over Saginaw HS, a game which Darrell sat out due to injury. None of them is over 6’5”.

Before the game tipped off, the entire Douglass squad did that move where they all take turns sliding on the floor, as if chasing an imaginary basketball. The Detroiters came out in -- imagine this -- a zone, due to the dramatic size differential -- there are at least 5 guys on the Orr roster taller than Darrell. It was Turnover City in the early going as both teams had trouble maintaining possession. Darrell was 1-3 in the first quarter, nailing a three and dishing an assist on a pretty inbounds pass that led to a score, as Douglass trailed 12-8. That was as close as it would get, as Orr opened up a 12 point bulge at the half, 29-17. The second half got a whole lot uglier before it got better for the Hurricanes and Douglass eventually lost, 60-50, done in by a 3rd quarter where they only tallied 4 points.

Darrell finished unofficially with only 5 points on 2-13 shooting; went 0-1 from the line; had 2 boards; 3 steals and 4 assists, by far his worst performance of the young season. The highlight of the evening for Davis was an unbelievable alley-oop pass to a teammate for an emphatic dunk.

After the game, I asked Douglass Head Coach Nkwane Young about his senior guard. Coach Young has been at Douglass for eight years, the longest tenure of any HS mentor in Detroit and everyone of his players has gone to college. He said "He is fun to be around and a hard worker.” Coach Young sees Darrell playing the 1 or 2 at UD. “He can really shoot, although he didn’t show it tonight.” He attributed his team’s loss to Orr’s size, stating “They were giants out there.” When told we would try and catch another game he closed by saying “Hopefully we’ll look better the next time you see us.”

Needless to say, Darrell was in a hurry to get the heck out of the gym after such a discouraging loss. I asked him why he chose the Flyers when he had an offer from MSU. “Loyalty” he said as Dayton had recruited him the longest and his Mom liked UD. Darrell also sees himself playing either the 1 or 2 at the next level. As to what he feels his strength is, Davis remarked “Getting my teammates the ball.” He feels that he needs to work on his strength, as he is listed at 6’4” but only weighs 170 pounds. When asked what his nickname is, he revealed that it is “Baby D.”

In case you haven’t seen Darrell Davis in action, here are some highlights from earlier in the season when he scored 32 points vs. another Windy City program, Chicago Bogan HS (Darrell is #1):

“FTS” went in search of Darrell Davis and unfortunately we caught him and his team on an off night.

That’s it “From the Swamp.”
