That's got the biggest disparity of any conference from the top school to the bottom school

St Louis built a new "barn" and they didn't come.

My money is on most if not all of the 1164 per game St. Louis lost last year coming back this season, worse case the following year.

I think one potentially interesting question would be what is the average ranking of UD attendance (and other schools), over a 25 year period. That would typically cover sufficient ground for up and down periods. Based on that, what is UD's average attendance rank and compare that to other schools to see how we stack up.

Windy City Flyer 08-09-2017 01:32 AM

I think the telling stat might just be the variance between average vs capacity. The numbers don't lie. The fan base at UD is unbelievably loyal. Sometimes I wonder why the stadium renovation didn't include 1000 additional seats. It looks like we'd support it quite well!

School Average Max % of Capacity
South Carolina 13995 18000 78%
Iowa 12547 15400 81%
Creighton 17412 18560 93%
Notre Dame 8254 9149 90%
Marquette 13715 18800 73%
UCLA 11182 12829 87%
Syracuse 21181 35446 60%
UNC 21181 21750 97%

UD 13415 13018 97%

Does anyone have the numbers for the Big 10? I would be curious to see some of the results from that conference.

#1 conference for 41st straight year. 11 teams in top 37. UD would have been 7th in Big10. Only NW, Penn St, and Rutgers average below 10k.

Here's a link the the entire Big10 list:

Not sure where you could find space for more seats without really altering the support structure. Based on the renderings I have seen, about the only place for more seats would be extending the wings on each side. However, that only gets you more 400 level seats - the cheapest seats. Pretty hard to justify the expense for the return. They are extending the east wing a bit to build a standing bar area at the top.

I wasn't really paying attention to renovation plans, what will be the capacity change?

Actually the numbers do lie. Our fan base is extremely loyal, but at every home game the upper 400 section (414?) is empty but yet they are counted as sold, even for sellouts. I believe these are overflow seats for students. I assume other programs might do the same thing, but what is true attendance? Since every student pays for a seat in their tuition/fees, one could argue that along with season ticket holders, every game is sold out. Fact is, UD arena is probably the correct size. If we truly did start to sell out every game, we could manage attendance via ticket prices. And, with more games on tv, all sports are past the point of adding more butts in seats

OSU Flyer 08-09-2017 12:47 PM

So if I read this right, if we were in the Big East and getting equal TV money by virtue of owning our own arena we'd be the most profitable program in the conference

From what I have seen - pretty much a wash. Very little change. Some suites and club seats added but some seats subtracted due to ADA requirements.

longtimefan 08-09-2017 03:36 PM

I'll throw in my pet peeve (again) about these NCAA attendance figures. In 09-10 UD averaged 13,038 during the regular season. Low attendance in an A-10 Tournament game and an NIT game lowered that to 12,258, which is the official NCAA figure. Other seasons were affected similarly. They even counted our First Four game in their official numbers, which makes no sense. I think the official attendance figures should count only regular season games.

Even a ticket is sold, it is counted. That is how everyone does their attendance, so if the numbers are lying for UD, they are lying for everyone in the attendance list.

As for the fact that we aren't sold out, therefore, a bigger arena isn't necessary, I argue that if the 300s following the lower bowl design, of encircling the court, and if that accounted for more seats, I think we would have those sold. People who may not want to buy seats in the corners of the 400, might be willing to buy seats in a behind the basket 300 seat if they were available (and not club suites).

Now, that's just my opinion, but I don't think our lack of sellouts means that UD Arena is the correct size.

Man, look at Creighton, they are #5 at 17,412 per game, and they have not made it past the round of 32 since 1974. Their fans deserve a lot better. Wow.

Seats during Christmas break

I hope that one of the items that happen during the renovation, is that some workers find and throw away the tarp they use to cover some of the 200 level seats in the student section. Fans should know that there may (and probably will be) some standing in that area. I assume those seats are counted as being sold, but it just looks bad IMHO.

Creighton and Marquette rent their arenas. I don't know for sure but what I've generally read from schools that rent their arenas.

They're paying a fee to rent the place for every game.

They're losing out on some or all of the parking, concessions, in Arena advertising, etc.

Creighton gets more folks to a game but they're paying out each game for the arena and are losing out on a degree of revenue

On Broadway there are inexpensive standing place spots behind the last row of orchestra seats. You get a number and stand at that number through the play. At intermission ushers will seat you in open and unused seats. Tipping is expected. Not sure if the UD arena configuration could allow that idea to add more "game opportunities" for reasonable prices.

If I am a season ticket holder and I am paying good money for my seats, I would not want somebody who buys a very inexpensive ticket sitting in my seats that I pay thousands for. What happens the time somebody plans on getting to the game at halftime because they had something else to attend or are late because of weather/traffic and when they arrive UD has already put someone into their seats?

Not really. Not the best regular season attendance in history. The NCAA says it's the best in our history simply because we didn't host an A-10 Tournament game or NIT game. See post #18 above.
