2017 Recruiting Thread
Good Call John, Let's get the 2017 Recruiting Thread going...
So Far Archie and Crew have offered 3 recruits from the 2017 class
6'5" F Jordan Tucker out of White Plains, New York
6'8" F Andre Rafus out of Baltimore, Maryland
6'5" G Tyler Foster also out of Baltimore, Maryland

Simply to get onto this thread, since the following was posted on the 2016 recruit thread before this one was created:
soccergod posted: Per Zack Fleer. Dayton will visit 2017 PF Derek Culver Thursday . He plays at Warren Harding and Illinois will visit after!
Jack72 replied: Derek is 6'7" or 6'8", and plays center. Seems like he has some work to do on his offensive game. He is getting some high D1 attention, so he must have some great potential.

If he is the little guard I saw in the Gonzaga-DeMatha championship game, he is quite a shooter.

I like that we are recruiting these particular areas especially:
Baltimore/DC Area
Bronx/Ny City Area
Chicago
I'm sure Arch has his ear tuned to PIttsburgh area too. MORE blue collar solid guys it seems in the Ohio Valley area, and tougher, grittier, smoother players from the above 3.
thought we were or are also on some players from
Texas and maybe Florida. Could be wrong

Seems like a done deal to Georgetown. Offered by the pseudo-hometown Hoyas on June 1, shortly thereafter sets his commitment date. Four 247 Crystal Ball predictions have him suiting up for John Thompson III (or his successor).

I used to work in the same division at NCR with Steve Lawrence. His department had to put his desk on blocks in order for him to get his knees under the desk. Steve rode his bike to work. One morning a lady driver struck Steve on his bike. I think the lady was startled by his size on the bike. How could you miss him on a bike on the road? I've met big guys and shook hands with a lot of big guys including, nowitski, diop, ostertag, gilmore and others and Steve was very tall. I believe they listed him at 6'10" in college but Steve was very tall. I believe that he is a 7 footer.

From an article on Florida Gulf Coast University
http://www.news-press.com/story/spor...city/29963151/
Sarasota Riverview rising junior shooting guard A.J. Caldwell, a four-star (of five) recruit by Florida Hoops who is ranked 25th in the state in the class of 2017.
"It's still early," said Caldwell, who has interest from Miami, Virginia Tech, Dayton, Davidson and Marshall. "(But) I like the atmosphere here. I've been to a couple games. (FGCU) is definitely in consideration."

Five Takeaways from Elevate Hoops’ The Showdown
http://collegebasketballtalk.nbcspor...-the-showdown/
Zach Kent is going to continue to draw high-major attention: Kent, a member of the Class of 2017, did not enter the weekend with much hype, considering he plays in a program — Delaware’s We-R1 — where he may not even be a top five front court player. But the 6-foot-10 Kent was terrific all weekend, stepping out on the perimeter to hit jumpers and taking apart defenses with his ability to pass the ball out of the high post. He’s slender and he needs to be stronger and more physical in the paint, but he’s got a frame that he can add strength to and a bit of a mean streak in his game.
Kent listed offers from La Salle, St. Joseph’s and Dayton but added that he had been getting some interest from Purdue, Notre Dame and Maryland.

Hamilton Heights announced today that Abu Kigab, the North Pole Hoops #1 ranked player in the class of 2017 will be transferring to the Hawks program for the 2015-2016 academic year.
Kigab, ranked #2 by Hoops Hype Canada in the 2017 class, is a 6-foot-6-inch guard playing for Adidas UPLAY Canada on the grass roots circuit. . .
Kigab has received an offer from Virginia Tech of the ACC conference, and is being heavily courted by Tennessee, Oregon, Georgia Tech, Iowa, Nebraska, Louisville, and Dayton.

Typical Archie target. We've seen it before with Devin and Devon and Dayshon and Dyshawn. Archie's MO is to get guys who are interchangeable in terms of position, so interchangeable in fact that they have basically the same name. I'm sure he's on the recruiting trail as we speak -- having given up all hope of finding another Xeyrius -- but desperately trying to find another Steve, a Daryl/Darrell, a Ryan, a Charles, a John, a Josh, a Williams or maybe -- the ultimate prize -- a Sam Miller. If Archie had been here for Chris Wright, you better believe he would have gotten AT LEAST two Chris Wrights.

Is 2017 the most important recruiting class in Dayton History? We will be replacing one of (if not) the best senior class is UD history (Scooch, KD, Cooke, Pollard). We should be coming off 4 straight NCAA tournament appearances (hopefully). The 2017 recruiting class will either continue to elevate this program or we will take a step back. I trust Archie to find the right pieces.

Kid's obviously a player, but I'm not sure I liked him bouncing the ball off of his defender's face. It's one thing to throw it off the back of someone on an out-of-bounds play; quite another to possibly injure an opponent.
All that said, there's a lot there to like. His shot is a bit unconventional; he shoots from the chest. Kind of reminds me of the UMass point guard, Trey Davis.

Spearman was a Brian Gregory recruit. Kendall Pollard was an Archie recruit. So I'm not sure why any feelings would be left over from an old regime, particularly with the way Pollard has blossomed as a player at Dayton.

If I was the Simeon coach and I encouraged Spearman to go to Dayton, I would be pi*sed at whatever it was that caused him to leave UD in such a huff after one season with the program in turmoil. In fact that whole season ended in a hot mess with Staten, Gregory, Spearman, Searcy, all leaving with bad Kodak memories.
Maybe that coach isn't there anymore. Oh wait, this just in, Robert Smith is still there. Now, does he still recall what happened? Who knows? I don't know why he wouldn't.

Staten, Spearman, and the next year, Hill were the transfers from that class. Devin Searcy played four years and graduated from UD with Chris Wright. Brandon Spearman transferred to Hawaii and played two years there. He graduated and didn't use his last year of eligibility. I remember when UD went to Maui seeing tweets from Brandon (probably retweeted by Oliver) welcoming the Flyers to the islands. I don't know why Spearman left, but I always thought it was the influence of his roommate, Staten.

There were reports that Searcy was very unhappy with his senior year. To his credit he held it in until he graduated.

Yeah he was not pleased with his PT. He told me once "I just wish that they would let me show them what I can do."

Simeon's #21 looks like the second coming of Kendall Pollard. Very big agile dude.

Wow...I think I saw 7 or 8 D-1 players on the court. Evan Gilyard can really push the ball. He has superb court vision and is lightening quick with the ball in his hands.

Gilyard is a nice little player with a lot of explosive moves but if a referee was so inclined he could call him for palming every time he touches the ball.

I noticed that as well. He does swing the ball sideways. You don't see it called much, but I have seen more palming calls in the last year than I have seen for decades.

I'm sure PT was part of it, but I have a feeling "scheme" was part of it, too. After Waleskowski & Finn graduated, BG's offense (if you want to call it that) never put much emphasis on feeding the post. And Searcy, at 6'10" and 225 lbs., was a post-up guy not a slasher, so his skills didn't mesh with BG's offensive scheme. On the court, it was a match made in, well, not Heaven.

Need Rollo's help here, but I thought we had this discussion before and there is no more "palming" call in basketball. There is a "carrying" call. Help.

'Palming' and 'carrying' are similar violations with 1 subtle difference...
Carrying means you're also moving forward...you can't carry if you're stationary. Palming can be done while stationary, but in most cases all you're going to see as a fan, coach or player is the mechanic.

At this point I'll let my good friend Clayton dispute my explanation.

I do not dispute most of your explanations.
I just dispute your inability to make the right call on the court when it involves my little princess who never does anything wrong. :D

Spearman ended up having a pretty decent final two years at Hawaii. Not sure who they play regularly but his numbers were say 11 or 12 points a game.
Got caught up in all the BS around the program. too bad all that went down, but its WAY in the past.

Bad news on 2017 big man Sterling Manley, via a tweet from Kurt Stubbs:
Kurt J. Stubbs II @Ohiohshoops
Bad situation here at Gahanna. Pick Central's Sterling Manley down on the floor with a gruesome leg injury. 1 of the best kids u will meet.

Sounds pretty serious .... from this mornings Columbus Dogpatch:
"The Tigers withstood an emotional jolt when 6-9 center Sterling Manley suffered a serious leg injury in the second quarter, resulting in the 20-minute delay while paramedics came on to the scene and transported him to a hospital. Manley already had missed the first six games after surgery for a broken tibia."

I don't really follow the prospects that aren't big time we're chasing/already verbal...... So Landers is next year/2016, Manley is 2017/two years from now? In other words he is a Junior in HS? What's his weight? is he a 3/4 or a 4/5? Thanks

Sounds like he will miss the rest of this season. He is long, tall kid but somewhat thin. This may change a lot of things for this young man.

I always felt like Searcy had some very reasonable post moves but it looked like every time he touched the ball he thought "I better shoot it, I may not receive another pass in the post for a few games" so he took some bad shots. He got screwed by BG's offense. If BG was smarter with his offense we could have taken advantage of his skills more.

Devin Searcy made the worst inbounds pass I have ever seen in the Arena or otherwise. He was on baseline and the other team was applying full court pressure. He threw the ball long like someone was supposed to be there, but it just bounced into the student section and the opponent got the ball under their own basket.
