Consistently overachieving will provide options

I keep reading the numerous posts about where we would like our MBB program, athletic department and university to be affiliated, in order to provide the national recognition and appropriate competition level that we all desire for UD.

The outside world views us as a struggling small school in a decaying city, with a small or overlapping media market. They feel that our rabid support of athletics is directly tied to the lack of other viable activities in the community. The outside world doesn't have the knowledge that we do: the university is thriving financial, expanding physically, heavily involved in research and offers a welcoming student atmosphere that develops into a cherished life-long bond to the UD community. Ongoing involvement in the UD community is happily made by choice, not influenced by limited options.

For the foreseeable future, there don't appear to be any affiliation options that are actually available and I am not sure that we have ever been fully deserving of consideration for an option greater than what we have been offered in the A10.

We fund and support our primary sports aggressively, but until recently the results have been lagging that support. For the athletic department to be offered admittance to something greater than the A10, our primary sports must overachieve on a regular basis, in order to overcome the outsider's perception of what UD is.

Overachievement provided X, Butler, Creighton with opportunities significantly better than their previous situations. Overachievement gives Gonzaga affiliation choices, if geography wasn't an issue, but still provides GU with the ability to schedule out of conference at an appropriate level. It wasn't long ago that X and Butler, specifically, where athletic afterthoughts playing in desolate and crumbling facilities.

UD has not consistently overachieved. Right now, a pattern has begun where the outside world is taking notice of UD MBB beginning to overachieve. I am concerned that MBB may temporarily take steps back while trying to recover from a change in coaches. Our expectations shouldn't change. Considering the $ spent on our MBB program, we should be hiring people that have the background and capabilities to charge ahead and allow UD to continue overachieving. When executives are changed in corporations, they don't arrive with diminished expectations. This athletic program should be past granting allowances for underperformance, but it is up to all of us as stakeholders in UD and UD athletics to remain firm with our expectations of overachievement. Otherwise, all of UD's (and all of our) expectations will never be fully realized.
