Oh, McKinley, what might have been?

19 points, 5 assists, only 3 TO in a win over #4 Arizona St. Not bitter, hope the kid continues to do well.

ClaytonFlyerFan 01-05-2018 12:00 AM

Our consolation prize had 12 points, 6 assists and only 2 turnovers last night against "an NBA caliber back court" that I also saw referred too "as possibly the best guard duo in the country"

Oh Jalen, how bright a future we have!

Watched a bit of the game and he sure looks like an exciting player. Not to nitpick but he actually had 5 TOs.

I'm not allowed to comment or think MW is a good basketball player without being accused of being MW or his uncle or his dentist.

I'm no talent scout, but he just seemed to have something about him. While I think "one got away" with MW, we were lucky to get Crutcher given the circumstances.

SeasonTicketFan 01-05-2018 10:41 AM

Wright is one of a many players who got away. Focusing on the players who are on the court works best.

Roger Brown and Wilt Chamberlin agree.:)

San Diego Flyer 01-05-2018 11:37 AM

Count me as one poster who has a curiosity about good recruits who got away. Not an obsession mind you, but just casual interest. Like Ladontae Henton. Maybe I check on Colorado once month.

But just to temper some poster's wild enthusiasm over Wright, consider this. Colorado is 9-6, with an RPI of 80, and an SOS of 40+. They have a win over a top 25 team, but are 1-2 in conference. The Flyers trump both of those numbers without him. We have a top 50 win which may turn into a top 25. Colorado has had modest success against tolerable competition. Our Flyers have faced a top 3 SOS.

Better to assess this when all precincts are reporting. And consider this, what would MW's presence do to DD. We all know DD is a bit of a head case when confronted with complexity.
Would he be the same producer with MW clamoring for minutes? I doubt it.

MW is good but not great to date, and Colorado is very pedestrian so far.

If we're going to talk missed recruits, might as well throw Nahziah Carter into the conversation along with Wright. He's having an OK, certainly not spectacular, frosh campaign at Washington. 5.1 ppg, minimal rebounds, nice steal numbers, not many assists, a few more turnovers. Looking at the game by game chart, he's put up some solid efforts vs lesser opponents, but has struggled to "find his shot" (or in some cases any shots) vs the better competition on their schedule. Not having seen a second of him play, kind of tells me that he's an explosive athlete that can control things vs lesser competition, but needs some refinement on his skill set to allow him to maintain that level vs better competition/athletes. Perhaps if he had stuck with the flyers he'd have a larger role than Svoboda currently does, doesn't appear to be as refined as Jordan Davis does (based soley on stats, and what I've watched of Davis).

Similar to SDF I'll always have an "interest" simply because they were committed to the Flyers at one point. Similar to Henton and the Dunkin Donuts kid, I'll never really dwell on it, because I understand why they made the decisions that they made.

Smitty10 01-05-2018 11:54 AM

I have no problem with MW being talked about here. But I'm not going to look at him as a lost opportunity either. MW posted the exact words of the title of this thread the same day it was announce that Archie was leaving. I think he was looking for an excuse to go elsewhere or at least had doubts to tweet that as immediately as he did. If he really felt he still might attend UD he wouldn't have tweeted that at least until our new coach was announced. A good point guard is a necessity and a great one is a luxury. For instance if we only had a game manager the past few years instead of Scooch, I don't think we could afford to have Kyle in the lineup because we just wouldn't have enough offensive punch. Crutcher seems like the type that can give us more production than say Khari Price but less than Scoochie while we now have Baby D giving us much more offensive production than Kyle. By having 2 guards that can give us offensive production, we have more options at the 3 spot.

So unless our Point Guard play suffers for the next few years, I really am not going to tempted to look at what might have been with MW.

cj 01-05-2018 12:01 PM

Oh Wilt Chamberlain, what might have been.

I check once or twice a month - and I usually check in on Naz at the same time. I haven't had the chance to see either of them play yet. I won't really go out of my way to do so, but would certainly watch if I came across their games. Maybe I will try to tune in when they play each other.

I'm also a college basketball fan and I can find some level of enjoyment in watching literally any college basketball game.

AZFlyer85 01-05-2018 12:35 PM

I do focus on our players. At the same time I'm a rabid college basketball fan, and have the fortune of being on the west coast and watching teams from the whole country.

It's great to see a kid who was committed to our program do well against top 10 competition. Nothing more needs to be said.

Chris R 01-05-2018 01:32 PM

Crutchers A/TO ratio is now 2:1.

For a frosh that's as realistically hopeful as one can expect. By the way Jordan Davis has a 3.5:1 ratio.

Last season I enjoyed keeping up with all of the recruits. I never played basketball at any level but I'd like to think that I can spot talent when I see it just like many Flyer fans. In the past the media has made comments that Dayton fans are really knowledgable.

I too noticed that McKinley, even though he was a scorer of the basketball, had something else about him. He was unselfish and showed maturity well beyond his years.

That being said, I think AG did a great job of dealing with the cards he was dealt! Jalen Crutcher commited the same weekend of his visit and said he felt this was where he was meant to be! It has been a mutual admiration and I hope his numbers continue on the rise. The more I see of him I am beginning to see the same talent and we all need to move on from MW. I know I will!

Sea Bass 01-05-2018 03:04 PM

The Flyers problems have been defensive more than offensive (except TOs). I doubt MW would have helped the defense much. It takes veterans to play solid defense and the flyers have a bunch of players who haven't played much.

Chris R 01-05-2018 04:05 PM

In wins, our defensive PPP is .950, in losses its 1.09. We are 6-1 when DPPP is 1.00 or less. The only loss was Miss State and we should have won that game.

When we defend, we're fine. We lead the A10 in FG% so scoring has never been the issue for the most part (ODU, SMC notwithstanding).

rollo 01-05-2018 04:18 PM

Do you McKinley stalkers still spy on your ex's?

AZFlyer85 01-05-2018 05:16 PM

Didn't think I was a stalker. As for the ex-wife, I traded way up.

hawkoooo 01-05-2018 05:53 PM

This is really dumb. Might as well start a thread about Adreian Payne.

UDTradition 01-05-2018 06:05 PM

This thread (and similar threads) should be described as torture.

I have not read it nor will I follow any (almost) UD player. I wish them as much luck as any other player that ever played the game.

I must say that I hate it when any almost UD player receives a topic heading. It forces me to read "what could have been". I have no choice. If the player does great then I am unhappy. If the player does terrible then I am unhappy.

To what end?

Let's consider not having a heading that reminds us of what could have been - good - or -bad. They both stink.

16 points & 10 assists in an upset of Arizona

FLYER5 01-06-2018 09:34 PM

Crutcher had a good game again today. I think this imaginary competition may turn out to be closer than some think.

jack72 01-07-2018 09:34 AM

I thought Crutcher was our best player yesterday with 14 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists.

FLYER5 01-07-2018 11:15 AM

Don't understand why he's gotten such a short leash. I thought early on he was decisive and capable of creating offense and creating his own shot. It's my thinking that he'll have ups and downs but he'll show continual improvement too. Something we've been missing out on.

NCkevi 01-07-2018 02:11 PM

Time to suck it up buttercups - Archie is no longer the coach at UD so time to move on

Because he had 5 or 6 bad games in a row. Like you say though, he is continuing to improve, be creative and become a solid ball handler.

His shooting % ten days ago .... was less than atrocious!

At the bottom of the article (in the nation's top 10 freshman section) they list him and consider him already a fringe NBA prospect...

Can we please close this thead? Maybe we can resurrect it if he decides to transfer to UD?

Can someone, you maybe, tell me why it's so hard to ignore a thread you don't want to read? Obviously there are members here that want to discuss him and others that don't.

bcross 01-12-2018 11:10 AM

Just like with Henton, people will care a whole lot less if we start winning.

For those of you that were ready to proclaim McKinley Wright the best thing since sliced bread, I watched the game between Colorado and USC on Wednesday, Jan. 10th and Wright had one of his worst games of the season as USC dropped Colorado to a 2-3 record in the PAC12 defeating them 70-58. His line in 34 minutes was 2 for 9 shooting, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 turnovers. He scored a total of 7 points.

It goes to show that anyone can have a bad game and even more so it can happen to freshman.

I don't really enjoy the articles about how awful of a coach AG is. So - instead of torturing myself, I just choose not to open those threads. It's pretty easy.

FlyerGuyer 01-12-2018 10:46 PM

Jalen Crutcher vs. VCU:

12 points, 10 assists, 8 rebounds, 3 steals, ZERO turnovers in 34 minutes.

Ok- be my guest and continue to gush over a kid who didn’t even consider UD after AG was named the UD coach. Why don’t you twitter him and ask for a selfy or a poster with his autograph. I look at what Crutcher did tonight against VCU and I’m more than satisfied with how it all worked out. I bet MW just laughs when he reads how you guys act like he’s the perfect “10” date that stood you up. SMH and laughing AT you...

I am getting ready to start a thread to comment on
LaDontae Henton's games for the Agua Caliente Clippers in the NBA G League!

longtimefan 01-12-2018 11:29 PM

Maybe we should start threads about what could have been with Wilt, Mark Baker, Ron Harper, Trent Meachum, Mike Pratt, Leon Douglas, and a few others.

Flyer69ers 01-13-2018 12:02 AM

and what if Chris Wright hadn't been injured his freshman year
