Conversations

WEST BLOOMFIELD (MI) -- Continuing in our series of summer reruns, “FTS” is pleased to bring you a collection of conversations that I have had over the past 10+ years with people connected in some way to the Flyer program. Rather than rank them by page views, I thought we would take them in chronological order. Here we go!

Date: June 9, 2010
Title: The Man Behind the Videos
Subject: Michael LaPlaca
Link: http://www.udpride.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14620

Like me, I’m sure most if not all of you are big fans of the video content that Doug Hauschild’s team cranks out of the Athletic Communications Department at The U. Michael is the guy behind most of that product and as you can imagine, it’s a daunting task. The last time I saw Michael was in Pittsburgh at the A-10 Tournament and he was extremely pleased at the way the CBS Sunday Morning piece by Dana Jacobson on UD’s Mandarin Chinese play-by-play radio broadcasters had turned out.

Title: Meeting Moville
Subject: UD Pride MB poster Moville, alias Joe Sutherland and his wife Ann
Link: http://www.udpride.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18326

Not only do I write these “FTS” pieces for you guys, sometimes I actually pen them about you.

Date: June 27, 2011
Title: A Day with Nick Charles
Subject: CNN Sportscaster Nick Charles
Link: http://www.udpride.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18492

Altho not directly connected to UD, I’m sure Nick and his partner Fred Hickman showed more than their share of Dayton Hoops highlights over their years together hosting CNN Sports Tonight. The most gratifying part of this column was the follow-up email that I received from Nick’s widow, Cory. She wrote:

Your article is so touching. This is Nick's widow and I can tell you Nick was 5'11 for the record. :) All the best to you, and thanks for keeping his memory alive in such a touching story. You captured him!

Date: July 11, 2011
Title: Flyer Reunion
Subject: UD footballer Mel Taylor
Link: http://www.udpride.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18534

Like I said in the intro to this piece, usually bloggers like me have gotta chase a story, but this time, it found me. Chalk it up to the advantages of wearing your Flyer gear when you play pickup hoops.

Title: In Search Of…
Subject: Flyer recruiting target Matthew Atewe
Link: http://www.udpride.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21459

It’s not every day that one can combine a trip home, a visit to your old HS stomping grounds and a chat with a potential Flyer hoopster all rolled into one. This was that day for me. Matt started out at Auburn and then ended up at Washington and was oft-injured in his time at both stops. He will be a grad transfer this year at Pepperdine.

Date: January 16, 2012
Title: Flying Wright
Subject: Chris Wright
Link: http://www.udpride.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20017

“FTS” went all-in for its first live reporting from an NBA game, with color pictures and everything! CW is still chasing that dream and one thing is clear: no matter where he is playing, he remains the same outstanding individual whom we had the pleasure of following in his four years at UD. Don’t ever change, Chris!

Date: February 11, 2013
Title: Brian Roberts Does The Palace
Subject: B-Rob
Link: http://www.udpride.com/forums/showthread.php?t=22676

Less than a month later, “FTS” was back at The Palace to cover UD’s other representative in The League when the Charlotte Hornets came to town. This time we were able to spend some time with our guy and ask questions. We also didn’t have to wait as long for Brian to get some PT. B-Rob’s run in the NBA may be over but I’m guessing he will continue to play overseas.

Date: November 29, 2013
Title: Johnny Davis
Subject: JD
Link: http://www.udpride.com/forums/showthread.php?t=24164

This is my most memorable conversation simply because Johnny has always been my favorite Flyer. JD has such a calm demeanor about him that I can see why he was so successful as an NBA coach.

Date: July 29, 2014
Title: Q&A
Subject: Doug Hauschild
Link: http://www.udpride.com/forums/showthread.php?t=25746

Doug has been the main-man behind the scenes for all of UD sports for decades now. “FTS” thought that it was high time we all learned a little bit more about him and all that his job entails.

Date: April 21, 2014
Title: Q&A
Subject: David Jablonski
Link: http://www.udpride.com/forums/showthread.php?t=25422

Ditto with the guy who covers the Red and Blue as UD hoops writer for The Dayton Daily News. David had fortuitous timing in moving to the Flyer beat prior to the magical Elite Eight season in 2014. His pictures from that run and the headline “THE University of Dayton” will live forever in Flyer lore.

Title: A Conversation With…
Subject: UD grad and Celtics beat writer Steve Bulpett
Link: http://www.udpride.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27587

Steve has been doing this a long time and his NBA (and UD) knowledge is encyclopedic. My favorite part was the guest appearance by Cedric "Cornbread" Maxwell, who was prominently featured in the recent ESPN 30 for 30 doc on the Lakers/ Celtics rivalry.

Date: May 29, 2015
Title: A Conversation With…
Subject: Kevin Kuwik
Link: http://www.udpride.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27732

This one was a lot of fun because it gave us some insight as to the inner workings of Archie’s staff. Kevin is now the Head Coach at Wayne HS (and a recent dad) and the Flyer Faithful wish you nothing but the best, Coach.

Date: November 21, 2015
Title: Live From Erie
Subject: Jordan Sibert
Link: http://www.udpride.com/forums/showthread.php?t=28382

I had never been to an NBA D-League game before, but when a trip to visit my in-laws coincided with an Erie BayHawks tilt, “FTS” was there. Like CW and CJ, Jordan is still chasing that NBA dream.

Date: April 26, 2017
Title: My NBA Cab Ride
Subject: John Drew
Link: http://www.udpride.com/forums/showthread.php?t=30840

This last one has absolutely nothing to do with UD, but it was so out of left field I just had to memorialize it. I mean c’mon—how many times have you gotten a cab ride where the driver was a two-time NBA All-Star?

That’s it “From the Swamp.”

Anyone else tired of this narcissistic drivel? How about some real news?
