Golden Grants - Ball State

2017-18's first Golden Award is named for our new coach whose 1st win at the U of D was as frustrating as it was exciting. Congrats coach...now let's win another 23 or so this season.

Now to the Awards...tough choices tonite. Did Cunningham's last second shot make up for a couple mistakes in the last few minutes? Or does Crosby get it for steady play throughout? Landers played great, but why wasn't he on the court for the last 3 minutes? Is Crutcher a better defender? And don't forget about DDavis!

Anyway, vote, vote and vote again!

Go Flyers!

MNFats 11-10-2017 09:55 PM

Had to go with Josh. Was tempted by baby D. There was a stretch in the 2nd where he put the team on his back and kept us in it.

Kevinob15 11-10-2017 10:07 PM

Cunningham for the consistency and putting the team on his back. Crosby a close second for a solid all around game. DD SOLID 2 minutes stretch to get us back in it but unfortunately he just can’t be the go to guy. Too many mistakes while trying to force it and just doesn’t look like a trusted senior out there. Williams gonna hate film tomorrow where he sees his HORRIBLE defense. Just happy with the win. Go Flyers

Josh easily. Other key contributors, but the one I know 100 percent we lose this game without is #0

ClaytonFlyerFan 11-10-2017 10:24 PM

How does this work? I am used to just clicking next to Kyle Davis name and not even looking at the other options.

Josh tonight. Honorable mention-Overall happy with both our point guards for it being the first game of the year, and considering what some on here expected out of them. A lot of basketball to be played yet.

TXFlyerFan 11-10-2017 10:24 PM

It's tempting when you think someone perhaps over-achieves, but gotta go with JCunningham, no matter how much Crosby and DD exceeded expectations.

udx2 11-10-2017 10:24 PM

Cunningham got my vote but pleased that we have others who can be in the running. Davis had a good game and is important as are both X and Crosby. Landers showed us something and we have yet to see What our frosh are capable of achieving. Should be an interesting year.

T-Bone 84 11-10-2017 10:26 PM

Loved DD's aggressiveness, but had to go with Mr C. 22 points, including the game-winning bucket. Decent all-around game, too. Yep, that's POG-worthy.

Also, props to The Cros for taking a quantum leap forward when compared to last year. Still won't be confused with Scooch, but few PGs in UD history measure-up to that standard.

It is confusing. And I'm especially surprised that Rollo didn't include Kendall's name on the list.

tirebiter 11-10-2017 10:33 PM

And, correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't that final assist on the throw in by Williams? Gutsy and absolutely accurate lob.

Wonder if it was desperation or if it was a planned attack.

jack72 11-10-2017 10:35 PM

Some contributors tonight, but how can anyone vote for anyone not named Cunningham.

shocka43 11-10-2017 10:42 PM

I vote DD, Josh, and Crosby. On the offensive end these guys looked like salty vets for a good portion of the game. Help side defense? Momma said if you don't have anything nice to say... Don't say it at all.

That had to be planned because absolutely nobody was coming back to help XW out.

jack72 11-10-2017 10:50 PM

I think JaVonna Layfield should have been listed. She had 20 points and 22 rebounds tonight in the Ladies' win against Harvard. Long time since a Flyer had 22 rebounds.

TommyGola 11-10-2017 11:09 PM

Definitely Cunningham. That last play required extraordinary effort and talent. After watching him live the last two days, I am convinced that he is pure "money" this year.

He seems to have a calm about himself. Seems to keep even keel all game long. While the pass and catch were perfect, he had one chance to make that shot and others with less calm tend to miss them. His calm, even keel personality on the court reminds me of Pierre though I think Cunningham is more so.

rollo 11-11-2017 06:36 AM

The first 10 minutes of the game belonged to XW and Landers.
Cunningham picked it up from there.
DDavis and Cunningham owned the 2nd half.
Crutcher was the most pleasantly surprising player.
The Greek Geek is nothing more than a project. Weak, slow and a low BB IQ.
But after a strange off-season, nobody had more pressure on them than Crosby and he played steady, smart and like a veteran from start to finish.

Crosby earned Rollo's Golden vote.

I only listened on 1290 but not once did i hear Larry or Bucky comment that John went in the air with no plan. Thats what i took away from last night. Thats more important then anything.

Jeff 11-11-2017 09:03 AM

Josh gets it hangs down.

The kid from Irmo is going to be a player.

Williams always shows he belongs in games like this. Cunningham gets my vote. I am happy with both Crosby's and Davis's performances. For all his good play JC could've been the goat for throwing the inbounds pass away that was deflected by the Ball State player. Overall I was pleased with the control he demonstrated. He showed he could dominate their level of talent with his dishing and driving. Same with Davis. The thing that impressed me most is how long he was able to stay hot. I don't think I've ever seen him sustain the level of play he played with last night. Seriously I think both players have gotten better. I know it was not the best competition we'll face but to be among the leaders in a closely-contested game was a great sign for both.

CvilleFlyer 11-11-2017 09:20 AM

I give my vote to John Crosby because he is a work in progress and, finally, after two seasons I don't shudder when he brings the ball up court. By not being in Scoochie's shadow and looking over his shoulder all the time at Archie standing in front of the bench and being intimidated he is surprising all of us!

My guess is that Anthony Grant, since he took over last March, has had several talks with John and told him to relax and play within himself. I am sure they probably watched film together from last season and Anthony calmly pointed out that he was dribbling the ball way too high which gave the talented A-10 guards many opportunities for a steal. Also, the jump stops in the lane seem to have stopped! Last night, when he went down the lane he seemed to have made up his mind before hand to take the ball strong to the basket. He finished for several layups and was drawing free throws in the process!

Everyone contributed to the victory, especially baby D, when we got down in the second half. He singlehandedly brought us back! Kostas will get better especially if we ever get out in transition. AG will work on getting the fast break going and especially improving on the defensive end as the season progresses. It was clear last night that Cunningham will be the leader because he seems to be the calming influence!

Beatty Town Coach 11-11-2017 09:39 AM

Josh gets the powerful vote of the "Senior" Pride of Beatty; but Johny Glue Man Landers definitely made his presence felt.

With some improved decision making wisdom from BabyD and Crosby, and this team becomes very potent. Flyers can do some damage and improve resume in Charleston.

Does anybody else think he may have reaggravated his knee injury between the exhibition and this game?

He was wearing a brace that he wasn't wearing in the exhibition and when he came out in the second half he immediately went to the trainer towards the tunnel. I'm not arguing that he is a project but I think he may have had a setback with his knee.

jack72 11-11-2017 10:31 AM

It was nice to see Kostas step up and make that three. Then it was equally not nice to see him come right down and shoot another early in the shot clock.

66flyer 11-11-2017 11:13 AM

Josh said in the post-game interview that the pass to him was the second choice. Passing to DD was the first, but he was even more covered than Josh. What a perfect pass from X that Josh, even with two opponents hanging on him, put in the hoop with no hesitation. These guys trust each other completely and it will pay off all season long.
RE: Crosby--I've been telling you for 2 years to be patient with him and now he's showing the player he can be and will keep improving. I have no doubt that AG is a great mentor for him. (and the rest of the team)
I hope this win will be the momentum the Flyers need to do well next week in Charleston.
Although Svoboda was missing due to a sinus infection/migraine, we still won. A good sign of determination. But no more illness! No injuries! My heart skipped a beat when Josh was flattened in the 2nd half.

cj 11-11-2017 12:06 PM

Josh could have only played the last 2 seconds and I would have voted for him. He wanted that ball and nothing was going to stop him from getting it.

I thought Kostas limped as he went to the tunnel after the Exhibition game was over. I sit at that end on the tunnel side of arena) I didn't want to say it out loud (or write it) but since you brought it up, I think something happened during the exhibition game.

Senior power. or junior , or 5th year senior. Whatever he is LOL. He took ownership!

Where is mad dog? I miss his insight on point guard play.

rollo 11-14-2017 03:05 PM

With 76 of 89 votes, Josh Cunningham is the first recipient of the Golden Grants! Wear them proudly Mr. C....they were well earned!

Thought Crosby much better than expected. Oh he's still terrible, and tried to give the game away twice near the end. But I expected worse, more of last two years of mad drives into the lane, a jump into the air with no plan and he seemed to curtail that. It's a long season, and I'm still not encouraged, but not abjectly distraught over having such a weak player leading the offense.

This should be a fun season as the two players that maddog guaranteed us would never have division 1 skills are now our two starting guards.

Im in the minority of those that think you bring something to the table. I was as anti-Crosby as anyone. Crosby gave me hope Friday night. I listened on 1290. Not one time did Bucky or Larry complain he was out of control. Thats major progress my man.
