MSOC: Dayton Dominates Milwaukee 2-0

DAYTON (OH) -- The UD Men's Soccer team opened the home portion of the 2018 schedule in style, up-ending the Milwaukee Panthers 2-0 in dominating fashion from start to finish. A goal in each half did the damage, keeping the Flyers undefeated at 2-0-1. Milwaukee suffers their first defeat of the season and falls to 1-1-0.

The Flyers switched on the afterburners shortly after kickoff and never eased off the gas, pinning Milwaukee into a defensive posture over the first 15 minutes they had trouble climbing out of. Consistent pressure in the offensive half of the field by the Dayton mids and forwards forced Milwaukee to play quicker than they preferred, tossing errant passes and getting dispossessed on numerous occasions as UD ran at players with full sprints. The persistence led to a number of great early scoring chances including a breakaway 1v1 with the Panther goalkeeper that was stoned inside the goal box.

Beyond the work rate however, Dayton displayed excellent one- and two-touch passing that helped speed up the play as well. With eyes up and looking for open spaces to exploit, UD had no trouble knocking the ball around for extended periods and finding gaps in the Panther defense. Overlaps along the touch lines were also effective as UD back-line players stormed forward with pace and received feeds from the midfielders to dribble-drive to the corner flag and send crosses into the box.

The work rate paid off in the 41st minute on a nifty baseline drive that resulted in a cross directly in front of the Panther goal line. The rocketed cross deflected off a helpless Milwaukee defender standing directly in front of the line and found the back of the net for the 1-0 Flyer advantage. With the pace of the cross, the defender was largely a victim of circumstances.

Dayton protected the lead into halftime, but could have easily been up two or three goals based on the overall run of play. Shots favored the Flyers 11-2 while corner kicks were 3-2.

The second half was much like the first 45 minutes. Milwaukee continued to have trouble overcoming Dayton's speed, rarely finding passing lanes that resulted in sustained possession moving forward. Much of their offense benefited from free kicks and throw-ins as GK Federico Barrios was forced to make just two saves all night.

The Flyers made it 2-0 in the 59th minute when Laurel Aug placed a near-post cross on a free kick along the left side. A mini scrum ensued and Agustin Volker tapped in the loose change to give the Flyers some breathing room.

A minute later, Milwaukee was issued a red card for a flagrant push away from the ball and forced to play down a man for the remaining half hour. They never threatened thereafter.

With the match largely signed, sealed, and delivered, the last 30 minutes were a bit sloppier than the first hour of play, but most of that resulted from some errant passes and nothing more. Dayton continued to play with a passionate work ethic that covered up any random mistakes and frustrated Milwaukee players hoping to get something going.

With lightning in the distance, the last 25 minutes were played out before inclement weather arrived as Dayton controlled every facet of the match down to the final whistle.

Overall shots were 20-6 in favor of UD with a 11-2 tally in shots on goal. The Flyer back line of freshmen Agustin Volker and Elias Harryson, RS-freshman Cole Watkins, and sophomore transfer Isaac Mensah did an outstanding job all evening of limiting Milwaukee's touches in the defensive half of the field and making Barrios' job a walk in the park. Up top, Rok Taneski, Jonas Fjeldberg, Aidan Bean, and Trey Marchino ran at players all night and forced the opposition into repetitive mistakes when the ball was at their feet.

Dayton returns to action on Monday at 7pm against Marshall at Baujan Field. The Thundering Herd topped Ohio State 1-0 in the Friday matinee.
