Syracuse (NCAA 1st Round) Game Thread

Congrats to the boys on making the tourney for the 3rd Straight Year! Let's show the cheater Boeheim how it's done just like a couple of years ago... Dyshawn right in the middle of that zone!

Game is at 12:15 on Friday in St. Louis and will be shown on CBS.

Starting Lineup:
G 10 Trevor Cooney 6’4” 195 GR Wilmington, DE
G 23 Malachi Richardson 6’6” 205 FR Trenton, NJ
F 0 Michael Gbinije 6’7” 200 GR Richmond, VA
F 21 Tyler Roberson 6’8” 226 JR Union, NJ
C 32 DaJuan Coleman 6’9” 268 SR Jamesville, NY

They have 4 guys that avg double figures... Gbinije avg about 18 a night. They are a very big team, we must be quicker and faster.

One more thing, for my sake please win... I WANT MSU SO BAD!

Let's Go Boys... I Believe! Go UD!

BRob2Perryman3 03-14-2016 03:28 PM

Michigan State. I want it badly too. Poker mentality, give me a chip and a chair and i have a chance. Michigan State is not unbeatable and they are one of the few remaining Big Time programs we haven't played since my fandom started. Want them bad. But the fellas need to focus on the task at hand and beat Syracuse. The fans can look forward all we want

Widget 03-14-2016 03:33 PM

UD is back to being the hunter and not the hunted......May God have mercy on Syracuse.....

UD fans, make sure to wear no orange this week. Hell, don't even drink orange juice for breakfast.

UDBaby 03-14-2016 04:12 PM

Rollo...looks like someone is trying to steal your crown! Call out the guards. Off with his head, the sniveling *******!!!

This game will be on CBS with Brian Anderson, Steve Smith, Dana Jacobson doing the announcing chores.

There's a hell of a lot more talent on the 'Cuse cheerleading squad than on the basketball team!

Those forwards MUST be outside shooters, as Gbinje is only 200 pounds. A creampuff like Mikesell sizewise?

I guess Coleman is their enforcer. That means there is room for Pierre and Pollard (and possibly Big steve) to score inside.

Their guards are big!! here's hoping that some guys can hit the 3 ball, but i expect Scooch to penetrate and explore that zone some with some interior drive and dish. Same with Pierre and Cooke, and also Pollard.

priceg75 03-15-2016 08:11 AM

Gbinije is essentially a point forward, as he averages 4.5 assists per game.

So a poor man's DeAndre' Bembry. Or a REALLY poor man's Denzel Valentine.

I tend to lean towards the less "flashy" girls. And that one on the far right is the runaway winner, the bow in the hair is a nice touch.

Just my meaningless $0.02

Yes, the way to beat their zone is penetrate inside...not taking three's unless they are kick out's after

I like blondes, dimples and freckles so I'll take 3 of the 4 to Utah and just retire...or start a movie company. ;)

BRob2Perryman3 03-15-2016 10:40 PM

Utah? Ahhhhhhhh, i see what you did there.

I believe the Queen strongly disagrees with this statement.

The most unique thing, Allen Griffin started as a sophomore, had a pretty good year. His junior year I sat him, I started somebody else. And that normally is transfer or I hate you, I'm not going to ever do anything for you. He worked right through it and ended up contributing, making a big contribution that year after that. And he's one of the best I've ever had. And when I knew there was an opening, I called Archie and I said 'this is a guy that would be an absolute great coach for you' and I think he has been, I think he's one of the best ever.

MICHAEL GBINIJE: We have to take what the defense gives us. They were trying to run us off the line, you've got to attack the basket strong and eventually that will open up the 3-point shot.

TREVOR COONEY: They're a really good defensive team and that's what they're known for. I think we're able to get the movement that we want to get and getting in the lane and make plays, we'll get the shots we want.

ARCHIE MILLER: Well, I think at first it has to start and stop with the administration. I think it has to go down from the vision of the administration and understanding that basketball is extremely important. I think the second thing would be the tradition-based fans, a community feel in town, but a fan base that's very knowledgeable that loves our arena, that loves the feel of being a part of a winner. And I think that's carried over. Right now the momentum that we have with our fan base and what's going on in the city of Dayton around our program is a high. But I think it starts from the top. Administration and the importance and the understanding that we have a great fan base and we need to cater to them. And the vision is always to continue to improve. You'll see when we tip at 11:15, we're going to have a heck of a showing here.

Q. Ever since 2014, with that Elite Eight run, your name comes up whenever there's a job opening out there. How do you handle that?

ARCHIE MILLER: I never pay any attention to it, to be honest with you. I have a job to do. Whether I'm an assistant coach, a graduate assistant or now the head coach I've always been taught if you do a great job at what you're doing, good things will happen. I just try to do a great job for our players at Dayton. I'm very, very comfortable at Dayton. We have a place, I think, to continue to get even better and better and what we do right now we own, it's ours, and I'm proud of that.

And Archie is funny too:

ARCHIE MILLER: Nothing. Nothing. He's scared to death. He's scared to death. Coach Boeheim scares him like no other person has ever been scared. He has no value in this game at all, actually. He just sits there and is very quiet on the bench. No, Griff has done a great job, and he's done a great job for us in his time here, and he does a great job with our players. There's not much he's going to tell me that I'm not going to know: They're going to play a real good zone. They're going to get their best players shots. That's what they do. They play with great freedom. He understands that more than anybody because he's been there. But there's a couple of things that he has a familiarity with that help us a little bit, but your personnel, your players they have to go out there and play.

BeckysTXA 03-17-2016 09:50 PM

Just read that Syracuse did NOT sell all their allowed tickets for the game so they opened up those seats to Flyer fans. Anyone know how many tickets they send to the schools??? 300??? 500??? Probably not going to be many Orange fans in attendance. I realize some got them from other sources, but hard to believe they didn't sell out their allotment.

Is the game streaming online?

BeckysTXA 03-18-2016 09:38 AM

I think all the games are streamed through the NCAA website. I think you go to the bracket page and there will be a link on those games streaming live as they are played.

Lifelong Flyer Fan 03-18-2016 09:45 AM

All of the games are streamed live from the NCAA.com. The "front page" lists the current games across the top and you select the one you want. The archived games are accessed from the bracket.

Ladies and gentlemen, I look forward to watching this game with you all in this thread. Three straight trips to the NCAA tournament is something pretty awesome, and when I was a student during the Jim O'Brien years I wasn't sure this would ever happen. I apologize in advance for any snark or irrational referee bashing which is sure to follow, but I swear it comes from a place of love. Also, I have not been drinking.

Go Flyers!

Dayton University Flyers??

So F'ing bush league. What a joke

Yes, our first "Dayton University" of the day. Might as well get it out of the way right off the bat.

OMG, really, this is nuts. Do these guys have a clue???

udx2 03-18-2016 12:17 PM

And, we get on the board first!

ScottyExpress 03-18-2016 12:23 PM

WhoooHooo Big Steve!

Flyer1995 03-18-2016 12:23 PM

Far too many missed easy shots to start. Flyers up 2

lhsgolf19 03-18-2016 12:23 PM

6-4 UD about 6 min in

BeckysTXA 03-18-2016 12:24 PM

We are killing them on the boards. Now just need to settle down and make some shots. So far we look ready to play hard and fast.

JimBo 03-18-2016 12:25 PM

If only we could make some shots.

jack72 03-18-2016 12:25 PM

Dunk the ball Steve. Then one of his silly reach fouls on the other end.

BRob2Perryman3 03-18-2016 12:25 PM

Very very reminiscent of the game 2 years ago. Now, lets get the same result

The Gem 03-18-2016 12:25 PM

I sense the grind it out win coming.

ScottyExpress 03-18-2016 12:26 PM

Not sure if I like this pace, and we still haven't gotten out of our shooting funk. We need to blow these guys away early.

Beatty Town Coach 03-18-2016 12:26 PM

Missing far too many makeable baskets. Tighten that up and we have a double digits lead.

udx2 03-18-2016 12:26 PM

Missing shots that we need to make -- shooting 30%, but the Orange are shooting only 1 for 9 early one.

Think the Flyers are up for this one.

SHQCKEY 03-18-2016 12:26 PM

If we continue to get the looks we have, hard to imagine us losing. Could easily be up about 8 right now.

udx2 03-18-2016 12:28 PM

Big Steve misses a dunk, again. Getting in, however, and that is good.

Flyer1995 03-18-2016 12:28 PM

we really should be up a lot right now. Steve with 2 missed chips. Love that he is getting these looks though

SHQCKEY 03-18-2016 12:28 PM

right on cue a missed dunk...

lhsgolf19 03-18-2016 12:29 PM

UD picking it up... 12-8 UD with 11:55 left

The Gem 03-18-2016 12:30 PM

Don't miss those Steve.

ScottyExpress 03-18-2016 12:30 PM

Back to back 3's!

MikeF 03-18-2016 12:30 PM

Except for falling asleep in transition after Smith's three, our defense has been fantastic so far.

jack72 03-18-2016 12:31 PM

Steve shooting with hesitation. Confidence big guy. They cannot stop you.

Great to see Kyle bury an early 3.

Bill McPeek 03-18-2016 12:32 PM

Steve has to get good minutes today

SHQCKEY 03-18-2016 12:32 PM

From what I've seen so far we control our own destiny in this game. We're better than them. Make a few shots and we win.

BeckysTXA 03-18-2016 12:33 PM

Cooke slam -- hope Steve learned something. :D

lhsgolf19 03-18-2016 12:39 PM

20-18 UD with 7:37 left

BeckysTXA 03-18-2016 12:39 PM

Steve just picked up #2.

priceg75 03-18-2016 12:40 PM

First possession with Crosby at the point: woof.

MikeF 03-18-2016 12:40 PM

I think A. Miller was looking at stealing some extra rest with his subs 21 seconds before the media timeout, but that lineup which just took us to the timeout was kind of a rough mix against this zone.

Sid Louick 03-18-2016 12:40 PM

The last minute was wild and no whistles. Tied at 20.

Phinhead54 03-18-2016 12:44 PM

MikeF 03-18-2016 12:45 PM

My kingdom for a made field goal from within three feet...

Flyer1995 03-18-2016 12:46 PM

Darrell with two awful threes...we need him to knock some of these down

BeckysTXA 03-18-2016 12:46 PM

Syracuse now leading the rebounding battle by 3.

Flyer1995 03-18-2016 12:48 PM

Cuse is hot, our defense is not

udx2 03-18-2016 12:48 PM

Just like that, down 5. Need a basket.

The Gem 03-18-2016 12:49 PM

Missing way too many point blank shots.

Medford 03-18-2016 12:49 PM

too many empty trips, too few points in transition.

jack72 03-18-2016 12:49 PM

The left corner is not our friend.

lhsgolf19 03-18-2016 12:49 PM

28-23 SU with 2:37 left... KD w 2 FTs after the TO

SHQCKEY 03-18-2016 12:50 PM

Welp, didn't make hay when we were getting paint touches and open shots. Got a game now.

MikeF 03-18-2016 12:50 PM

We just shot back-to-back airballs on threes from the same corner. They were both pretty ugly.

priceg75 03-18-2016 12:50 PM

I know this will come as a shock, but our offense didn't get fixed in the last 6 days.

ScottyExpress 03-18-2016 12:50 PM

Too many missed opportunities early. Scooch and DP need to take this game over.

The Gem 03-18-2016 12:51 PM

Our defense and toughness will have to carry us, it's not looking like a good shooting day. Our half court offense looks confused right now.

BeckysTXA 03-18-2016 12:51 PM

When we were ahead our FG% and 3FG% were both in mid 40's. (And could have been higher since we missed a bunch of 3-footers). Now both in mid 30's.

JimBo 03-18-2016 12:51 PM

This Syracuse team is just not very good. This is the kind of first round opponent you want. I think we put it together in the second half and win by 10.

TommyGola 03-18-2016 12:51 PM

Definitely. We were kind of having our way at the beginning, getting good close shot after good close shot. Now we're struggling to penetrate the zone and chucking air balls.

Flyer1995 03-18-2016 12:54 PM

SCoochie!!!

udx2 03-18-2016 12:54 PM

Soochie for a 3! Tied.

jack72 03-18-2016 12:56 PM

How many point blank shots have we missed? At least 6.

MikeF 03-18-2016 12:56 PM

That fast break layup on the turnover right after Smith's three would have been nice...dang it.

TommyGola 03-18-2016 12:56 PM

Kyle is playing some tough ball right now. We are having real problems finishing around the hoop.

SHQCKEY 03-18-2016 12:56 PM

Easily left 12 or 14 points out there so far on missed layups/unconverted paint touches.

It feels like we're shooting like 25% from within five feet.

Flyer1995 03-18-2016 12:57 PM

So frustrated with the easy shots missed by thee guys, should be up right now by 6-8 instead of down 2

Beatty Town Coach 03-18-2016 12:57 PM

Throing entry passes at the feet...not good.

Kyle should have passed to Cooke on the breakout. Missing too many point blank looks

The Gem 03-18-2016 12:57 PM

Let's get this last shot and see if we can make some adjustments against that zone.

TommyGola 03-18-2016 12:58 PM

I feel sorry for Darrell. Last year he played with a smile on face. This year he is always frowning. He just needs to keep shooting and build some confidence.

The Gem 03-18-2016 01:00 PM

So much for the last shot, now don't fall asleep on D.

T-Bone 84 03-18-2016 01:00 PM

Considering we're not playing that well, being down 2 at the break isn't the worst thing in the world. Need to start making those wide-open shots, tho.

TommyGola 03-18-2016 01:00 PM

OK, don't foul on this last second shot!!!

Flyer1995 03-18-2016 01:00 PM

Three from ridiculous range doesn't hit, cause with the ball 1 second left...i swear if they hit something here

jack72 03-18-2016 01:00 PM

That last shot crap is so bad. I do not believe in it. Run it down get a horrible off balance shot.

udx2 03-18-2016 01:00 PM

At the half, down 30 - 28 but gave up many opportunities. The Orange got hot after a cold shooting start.

We can do this. Only 4 FT per team, they are letting the teams play.

Medford 03-18-2016 01:01 PM

against the zone, I don't like waiting that long, its already taking them too long to get into their offense, to try and pull it off when only starting at 10 seconds was asking for a poor shot.
