Davis and Cunningham need another consistent performer. Landers could be that player and he could make a difference.

Rick Scaia 01-03-2018 11:26 PM

DDavis and Cunningham have certainly been the closest thing we have to sure things this year... add some more pieces, and who knows where that trajectory takes us.

I'd love it if Landers continues to embrace all the physical/down-and-dirty stuff so that Josh doesn't have to do it all. And JDavis as DDavis' counterpart pretty much writes itself, as far as our outside threats go (which is great, since Svoboda hasn't shown up so far, and #1 Perimeter Option should NEVER have been XW's job description, no matter last year's late game heroics).

Kostas has had his flashes, too. XW and Crosby probably can't be expected to be what we had hoped before the season started, but that doesn't mean they can't contribute. Which pretty much means all we need to be a different team in March than we are in January is for Crutcher to pull off the Full Scooch. By which I mean: find the confidence, be playing like an upperclassman, and more or less be the PG, despite having a guy "ahead of you" on the depth chart. I don't think that's unpossible.

TommyGola 01-03-2018 11:31 PM

Trey had an outstanding game on both sides of the court.

flyerfever 01-03-2018 11:33 PM

Physical. He wants to be that guy.

ClaytonFlyerFan 01-03-2018 11:39 PM

I am sure I missed something, but by my count Trey took 2 charges, forced 3 jump balls, and had at least half a dozen tips or deflections that led to rebounds or steals by his team mates. Excellent help defense and hustle most of the night. Plus what shows up in the box score.
Will be my vote for player of the game.

My biggest complaint about Trey in the past was silly turnovers, but he fixed that problem tonight too.

The guys are starting to settle into their roles.

IMO, the scoring end of it will continue to be a different guy every night outside of DD and Josh. Some nights it will be Kostas. Some nights it will be JD or Crutch or don't shoot me now, even Crosby or X. Tonight it was Trey.

Where Trey can bring consistency is his energy and effort. Through that he can/will become a difference maker.

If tonight is any indication of what this team is capable of, on any sort of consistent basis, it should be a fun ride into March.

UDEE79 01-04-2018 12:47 AM

Prepare to LANDERS, return your TREY to the upright and locked position.

shocka43 01-04-2018 06:54 AM

I like saying I told you so when performances like this start to present themselves...from June...:)

He has the physical tools and we have seen what he can do. He improved drastically last season and he lost his season long minutes under Archie early on. Basically...he D was so weak at the beginning, by the time he got up to speed, it was too late.

He is going to come in this year up to speed and will get a fair shake all season. He blew his chance last season as he was slow to get to where he needed to be.

Trey is my wife and daughter's favorite Flyer and he was at my son's HS game on Tuesday night....when they saw him nothing was holding them back from getting a selfie and talking a few minutes.

Like the Queen's husband, he's an awesome physical specimen and an impressive and personable man. My wife mentioned to him how much she loves his defense and his reply was "Thank you, that's where it all starts."

All Hail, Sir Trey! The newest Honorary member* of the Royal Roundtable!

What an honor...many have attempted but few have actually entered Rollo's kingdom of excellence.

Trey was great, but I do believe the whole team grew up last night.

Grown up? Well, they may have grown some but there's alot more actual growing up to do. Let's see if this team can put back-to-back games together first...Yes, last night was a big win for them both in the standings and from an emotional and confidence standpoint but they need to be able to at least sustain and to carry over the small battles and successes into practice today and continue to work on their weaknesses that are still plentyfold.

Whatever Grant did these past 4 days or so also showed some real growing by this coaching staff as well... It's pretty difficult to have all these new, young and inexperienced players along with an entirely new system and expect real success as in W's. AG made a comment last night after the game that we all hope can penetrate their skulls about what can be accomplished when everyone is on the same page..

I thought the foundation for this year needed to be DD, JC and X when healthy. We need 3 guys to get it done this year supported by a young rotation on any given night.

But I have zero problem with TL stepping up and filling that third spot. I especially think it can be a huge message to any player who isn’t buying into the AG era and contributing very little except attitude. Unfortunately that might be more than one players problem.

Trey stepping up last night not only helps this team win, it also helps this team move beyond any players living in the past or thinking they are bigger than the team or program. That might be the biggest contribution TL delivered last night by playing great.

Posting them here because there are some good ones of Trey. Particularly like the one of he and Adams.

The Queen and Royal daughter insist that there is no such thing as a bad picture of Trey.

Gazoo 01-04-2018 09:44 AM

I only saw the second half, and I will not diminish the difference maker that Trey was last night. But at the end of the game he got lazy on several box out assignments and nearly cost us the game in the final 5 minutes. On every one of those offensive rebounds he (and Kostas) were standing there trying to out-jump the opponent instead of getting position.

But, no doubt an overall quantum leap forward. Nice game.

The picture of Trey hunched over with Jaylen Adams at the lane is priceless. Adams is trying to laugh it off, but Landers is questioning Adam's manhood, his ancestry (as in who's your daddy), his little bitty 'nads, and was dead serious about getting into Jaylen's head.

Where are those posters that think Landers is too short for the position he is playing? This kid has attitude just like Kyle.

Nate Green, Charles Little, Trey Landers (did you check out the guns in one pic?)

I don't want to jump on the negative bandwagon but there is enough high praise being tossed around (of which I agree). There were a number of plays at the end of the game (and last play of the first half) that I hope they learn from. Jordan Davis fumble out of bounds, Jalen Crutcher misses 2 FTs then follows up with a stupid foul. Those plays didn't kill them but they have to realize one play can mean the difference between a win and loss.

rollo 01-04-2018 10:33 AM

2016-17: 52 minutes played, 27 pts, 13 rbs.
Last 3 games: 107 minutes played, 38 pts 13 rbs.

You saw a veteran UD team just in the past 2 seasons do plenty of that as well. Maybe not nearly as much at the end of games but in the first 30 minutes of plenty of them. No team, let alone this current team, will play a perfect game and, again, there is plenty they need to refine which will keep practices interesting...

That was a hero/goat move, and I said that at the game at that moment. He went for the steal, and got called for a foul. If he had nailed that steal, and was able to get a breakaway bucket, the crowd would have gone more wild than it already was and no concerns over the play.

Gotta know the situation. Going for the steal was out of frustration for the missed FTs. Steal was not needed, running clock was needed and he failed at that. Can't blame him for missing two FTs, they are never automatic. But the problem was, we needed the clock to run and he missed 2 FTs with clock stopped, advantage SB. He then stopped the clock and allowed SB two offensive points with said stopped clock, advantage SB. That's a 4 point swing with hardly any clock movement.

This team walks a fine line between winning and losing games and Crutcher better learn(and I assume he got an earful and will) that you don't take your personal frustration out at the team's expense, like Kostas hopefully did against Duquesne.

My favorite thing is seeing our #3 be a leader among our players. Kyle did it for years, and TL has been doing it this season. Any big play has TL involved. If not physically, he's giving everyone involved a pat and a pep talk. We needed this!

Well, just as I did not assume "Trey grew up" meant he was grown up, I did not mean the team is grown up. They and he grew up last night. They and he have a long way to go to be grown up. The team took a big step forward last night, especially Trey.

These are excellent photos...love that one of Trey talking to Jalen Adams. That is classic - two warriors during a brief truce!

Oh my, do I miss Kyle Davis. He was a complete warrior and over-achiever. Literally, he was one of my favorite Flyers ever. I still remember that Fort Wayne game his freshman year when his pass to Siebert enabled the last-second shot and victory. Without his pass, we could have never made that run in the NCAA.

All Hail, Sir Trey! The newest Honorary member* of the Royal Roundtable!

Trey is no longer an Honorary Member of the Royal Roundtable. Things change.

Last night my son's GF (last name Duvik...her dad was a kicker at UD back in the 90s) thru him a birthday party. Little did he know that family favorite UD basketball player was also invited. Late last night, after the King and Queen had left, in walks Trey. He gives big Dave a hug, takes some selfies, hangs with the Oakwood '18 kids, plays some FoosBall (Trey sucks at foosball) and basically just took over the party. I've seen the instagrams and selfies and if I could grant myself 1 wish, it would be to have Trey's physique for a week. That man is not only well grounded and a leader, but he's chiseled out of stone.

Long live Sir Trey Landers...a permanent and deserving member of the Royal Roundtable.

So Sir Clayton...scoot over. Trey gets your seat as the King's Right-Hand-Man.

What an honor for that young man - Rollo's Royal Round Table! Do you know how much competition there has been for such recognition? "Many are called but few are chosen!" Oh, I am so jealous of both Trey and Rollo!!!!!!!!!

Which reminds me to say that Landers admitted that he likes Anthony Grant more than Miller and that he believes Allen Iverson is the greatest NBA point guard ever.

We all have our flaws.

Well, Iverson was one helluva point guard, but he did lack a little something when it came to "practicing" with the team. :)

Mike Duvic class of '89 was a great kicker. I believe he is the school's all time leading scorer and most accurate kicker ever. I also think he is in the UD Athletic Hall of Fame. I graduated with his sister Ann in '92 and met him a number of times, really nice guy.
