MSOC: Flyers and Herd Battle to 0-0 2OT Draw

DAYTON (OH) -- Dayton and Marshall tangled in a competitive battle on a hot and steamy Labor Day matchup at Baujan Field, but even 20 minutes of extra time couldn't separate the teams. After 110 minutes, the resulting 0-0 tie was probably well earned by both sides considering the climate. Dayton now stands at 2-0-2 while Marshall leaves town 2-1-1.

The match proved competitive and entertaining from the opening whistle as both teams did a nice job of knocking the ball around in tight spaces to maintain possession and move forward. Dayton had the better run of play over the first 10 minutes however and that led to more dangerous scoring chances as well. Several crosses in the box including a pair of corner kicks gave UD an early opportunity to take the lead in the match, but no one was home to stick those crosses into the back of the Marshall net.

Marshall slowly began to find their own way and over the next 10 minutes reversed the momentum of the match as they got forward with numbers. Utilizing the width of the field and playing long balls to the weak side, the Herd stretched the Flyer back line and were able to send dangerous balls into the Flyer goal box that Federico Barrios was able to pluck out of the air.

The match grew more physical over the final 20 minutes of the first half as the referee blew his whistle on several occasions to award free kicks for dangerous plays around the ball. UD surrendered a dangerous free kick from 23yds out the Flyer defensive wall subsequently blocked, while the Herd earned a yellow card for high studs on an ugly challenge in the midfield. Marshall earned a second yellow on a high-boot cut on David Lianes with under 10 minutes to play in the first half that gave the Flyers good field position for a free kick into the mixer. Like other balls in the box from both teams however, nothing resulted from the opportunity.

Barrios came up huge on a couple saves late in the first half to keep the match scoreless. Marshall controlled the last 10 minutes of the 1st half as UD had trouble linking passes together and creating sustained possession. Not much was settled heading into intermission.

UD out-shot Marshall 11-4 in the first half, including a decisive 7-1 advantage in corner kicks. That said, Barrios' diving save was the lone save by both goalkeepers as neither team put quality shots on frame. Indicative of the physical play, 15 fouls were whistled in the first 45 minutes.

The second half started a bit sloppy for the Flyers with some unforced giveaways in the defensive half of the field. Those poor touches led to Herd scoring chances. The most dangerous opportunity came on a cross in the box that resulted in a header on frame, but Barrios was there to collect the easy save. On the other end, Taneski almost put the Flyers up 1-0 but returned the favor and hit the woodwork to keep the match scoreless.

Teams took a water break in preparation for the final 30 minutes of regulation. Shortly after the restart, the Flyer D came up huge once again after a Herd attacking player danced through the left side of the goal box and placed a shot from 10yds out that was deflected by Barrios and subsequently cleared from the middle of the box at the last second. As the match continued, things appeared more certain that a single goal would ultimately decide the game.

Dayton thought they cashed in on a beautiful right-side cross and mid-box header in the 64th minute, but the offside flag went up and the goal was disallowed. It was one of the few chances UD put on frame all night despite the large number of shots taken. Over the last 20 minutes, neither side could solve the opposing defenses and the match ended in regulation time stalemated at 0-0.

Unfortunately, another 20 minutes didn't solve much either. Both sides had a couple of opportunities with long balls in the box, and UD had perhaps their best chance of extra time just 2 minutes left in the second OT. A Flyer attacking player got loose in the box, Marshall defenders recovered, and a scrum ensued. After several touches and tackles, the Herd managed to clear the ball away just 5yds from their goal line. Following that, both teams ran out of gas and effectively shut things down for good. The heat and humidity combined with the extra periods took their toll on players over the last hour of play as the legs surrendered to the climate.

Overall, UD outshot Marshall 22-10 but were out-flanked on shots on goal 4-3. Generating 22 shots but putting just 3 on frame was UD's undoing, nevermind the 10-1 advantage in corner kicks. The Flyers had their chances on offense despite the run of play being relatively even. Playing at home, UD is probably mildly disappointed in the outcome. That said, the Herd were the best foe UD has faced at home this year -- including the exhibition against Ohio State. A 0-0 draw won't change season for the better, but it didn't leave any lasting damage either.

Barrios kept the Flyers in the match with some timely saves -- he didn't have to do a lot but when he was called upon he answered big. Credit must also go to his young and inexperienced back line that once again pitched a shutout -- their fifth in six matches going back to the exhibitions. That bodes very well moving forward.

UD hits the road for a match at Western Illinois on Saturday Sept. 8th. Kickoff is 2pm.
