Has UD ever offered a freshman in high school in the past? Chris Wright?

How about a freshman in HS from California?

frisco flyer 08-23-2018 08:59 AM

This kid is already 6’5”. He may not be a PG by the time he’s in college!

oldfan 08-23-2018 09:22 AM

One down. How many more scholarships are available for 2022?

Got start a relationship early and often with players regardless who you are as a school let alone UD who will be fighting every big boy school in the country or alot of them...

Archie got in early on with McKinley Wright and it paid off (temporarily) until he took the job at Indiana. However, this is an entirely different situation. McKinley blew up and everybody else jumped on the bandwagon, even P5 schools like Minnesota. Ramel Lloyd Jr. is like a Tre Jones from Apple Valley High School in St. Paul, MN. the #1 PG in the class of 2018 who is going to Duke! Both started getting notoriety in the 7th grade and, unlike McKinley Wright, everybody (all the P5 schools) started to follow their progress at an early age.

I watched all of Ramel Lloyd's you tube videos and, believe me, he is worthy of being rated as the #1 PG in the class of 2022! If Anthony Grant pulls a rabbit out of the hat and gets this kid the A-10 in 2022 better watch out!

Didn't Juwan Staten ACCEPT a UD offer in his freshman year in high school?

I believe it was his sophomore year

Hobopotamus1 08-23-2018 01:28 PM

We offered Jaaron Simmons from Alter when he was a frosh.

Hobopotamus1 08-23-2018 01:29 PM

Here's a dumb question that I think I know the answer to: The star rating is not in comparison to other freshman, right? He's a two star right now, which is awesome for a freshman? In other words, a 2 star frosh is likely to be a 4-5 star by the time he is a senior?

NJFlyr71 08-23-2018 01:36 PM

Ya gotta give AG and Staff a Hi FIVE

We may not get these HI Profile players but the UD coaches don't seem phased by this one bit.

If you want to catch the big fish you have to put the line where the BIG FISH are, not into the Goldfish Pond in the backyard.

Of course a great fisherman always has plenty of lures and lines placed around various fishin' holes to hedge his chances ...

I'd say go get them AG and Staff. :D

And a really great fisherman lands a big one in the boat now and then.

Yes it is which means they need to get in even earlier....Obviously, UD feels like they can at least make a solid impression on him or they would pull an Archie and feel they have no chance..Or UD needs to at least establish a presence with that coach, school, area or all three... Definitely a method/ madness as to why they are going after him...

He had a great two years at OU (first team all-MAC) and then had a great seat on the bench at Michigan. He averaged 15.9 and 15.5 points and 6.5 and 7.9 assists at OU.

Hobopotamus1 08-24-2018 03:27 PM

Saw him play at OU. He was pretty tough on a pretty bad team.

Hobopotamus1 08-24-2018 03:36 PM

At Michigan, Jaaron averaged only 8 minutes and 1.5 points per game.

OU was 23-12 (11-7) and 20-11 (11-7) in his two seasons there.

TerryK_67 08-24-2018 05:25 PM

so why did he leave OU? .... sounds like leaving was not in his best interest...… I always got the impression he was expecting Kentucky or Duke to come calling.....

...and they were still pretty bad. I'm an OU alum, but the MAC is not what it used to be. To be fair, guess I meant that they were pretty bad without him. He made them average.

springborofan 08-25-2018 08:36 AM

Figure maybe 20 kids a year ever get the chance to play in a national championship game. Over fifty years that is 1000 kids. That is elite company and an experience so few ever get to enjoy. Yes, he only played 3 or 4 minutes but I'm guessing he is not unhappy with the choice he made last year.

just shows you how thelevel of quickness and competition changes another division or two higher. He did it for some reason, and i suspect he ain't too unhappy about it.

I think Archie offered current Butler senior center Nate Fowler during (not before) his freshman year at Moeller. Would need to check posts from 7 years ago to confirm.

I agree to some degree...but it also hints at the point that graduate transfers are often viewed as insurance policies for a given position, with point guard being the most subject to injury or events. It is often very difficult for these players to crack a starting lineup or get significant minutes.

Paul McMillan IV is a top recruit in the 2022 class (Top 12 or 25) dependant on sources. Projecting out kids in 2022 is kind of fuzzy at this point. Regardless, he will be a heck of a player, good job to CAG and staff for getting in early.

His dad, Paul McMillan III was pretty good @ Loyola in the early 2000's averaging 16 ppg for his career. Paul IV is likely going to blow up...

OSU Flyer 05-23-2019 05:37 PM

https://www.wcpo.com/sports/high-sch...er-to-woodward

CINCINNATI — 2022 point guard Paul McMillan IV has decided to enroll at Woodward for the 2019-20 school year.

McMillan, a Division II second team all-state selection this past basketball season, was first team all-district and the Cincinnati Metro Athletic Conference player of the year for Hughes.

McMillan, who has scholarship offers from Xavier and the University of Tennessee at Martin, averaged 24.7 points, four assists, 3.8 rebounds, 2.3 steals and shot nearly 48% from the field and nearly 80% from the free-throw line for Hughes (18-5 in 2018-19).

Woodward plans to participate in summer team camps at Memphis (June 4), Ohio State (June 6), Indiana State (June 12), Dayton (June 15-16) and Northern Kentucky University (June 18).

OSU Flyer 01-19-2020 08:29 PM

One of the top 2022 prospects in the event was Cincinnati native Paul McMillan, and though his team lost, McMillan showed what he is capable of.

Currently McMillan’s biggest strength is attacking the rim off the dribble, but he is also showing an improved shot.

Schools such as Cincinnati, Dayton, Xavier, Ohio State, Louisville and Purdue are all very much in the mix with McMillan at this early stage in his recruitment.

I saw McMillan play yesterday in the event. Most of his points were scored during garbage time when the game was well out of reach.

He is lightning fast, but his shot needs a lot of work. it does not look smooth and natural. When the game was still competitive, he tried to force the action and turned the ball over a number of times.

I reffed at Alter last week and spoke to the assistants about a couple of their players...Brady Uhl, Jack Smith and Meyer...Uhl and Smith are both going D3, Connor Stolly (6'8") is going NAIA/D2 and Meyer is the one they said has the most potential...but he needs to keep growing. And I agree.

Introducing four-star sophomore Isaac McKneely

A native of Poca, West Virginia, Isaac McKneely just completed his sophomore season for his local Poca High School unit.

McKneely averaged 22 points per game this past winter, all while making 45-percent of his 3-point attempts.

A 6-foot-4 scoring guard that can also play on the ball in spurts, McKneely was slated to play with the Wildcats Select 16-under team this spring and summer on the adidas circuit.

He did say that he is wide open with things and in no rush to end his recruitment. His offer list also includes Davidson, Liberty, Marshall, Robert Morris, Stetson and Xavier. The others showing interest at this time are Cincinnati, Dayton, Indiana, Ohio State, Virginia and Virginia Tech. He has taken unofficial visits to Davidson, Indiana, Liberty, Marshall, Ohio State, Virginia, WVU and Xavier within the past year.

It'll be interesting to see how many Grant and company land. Should give us a pretty sense as to how in-state recruiting is going to go.

The staff has had plenty of time to establish connections with Ohio high school and AAU coaches. They've had as high a profile year as they'll experience anytime soon. And a top-50 player is a few miles from campus. Time to reel some talent in.

I saw AJ and his parents at one of the Flyers' games this year. It did not appear to be an official visit, as when I saw him he had no UD official with him. In fact, he and his parents were on the bus to remote parking. He is long and lean.

Videos on AJ Clayton. He handles the ball extremely well for a kid 6'9. He also has a spin move and crossover dribble...even a step-back jumper. I know these are videos and he is not playing against top competition, but one has to be impressed. He should warrant more than the current 2-star rating.

If he was only 6’2”, I could understand the 2-Star rating. But at 6’9”? With that shooting range? At only 16? Yeah, he should be at least a 3-Star at this point.

It's seems worth noting that Dayton appears to be slower to offer recruits than lots of schools. You see them communicating with a healthy number, but if you get an offer from UD, it means they're looking to bring you aboard. Lots of schools hand out offers like candy (and won't accept commitments on all offers). Grant seems much more inclined to dial in on a small number of recruits and make them know they're wanted.

It's a different recruiting strategy, but I don't know that it's better or worse. It could also be partially due to the Dayton staff not leaking info to reporters as much. Either way, when Dayton offers a player, you can take it to the bank he's a high priority.

I really believe it has as much to do with UD recruiting the actual young man as it does the player. They want to make sure they're getting somebody that wants to be at Dayton and is fully committed. You are correct that so many schools throw out scholarships like it's candy and most of them are non-committal. They want to see the kid up close or in a camp or maybe they're fourth or fifth on their board and only if the top two or three don't come in only then will they get a committable offer.

The Sharavjamts kid is a fascinating story. His father is a former professional player and the head coach of the Mongolian National Team. He came to America through connections made via basketball-based international charity, Athletes in Action. And where did he end up? He ended up in the Dayton area, of all places, enrolling at Legacy Christian Academy in Xenia, before heading out to California.

Athlete In Action is based in Xenia where they have a large sports complex and retreat center. A friend and former neighbor works there. Great organization.

BTW has Fordham named a new coach yet? I've heard Grasso was one of the leading candidates. If he were to get the Fordham job what happens to all of those Bryant offers?

I see no proof that Jeff Neubauer is no longer coach at Fordham. He was hired in 2015.

Surprised the link hasn't been dropped in here yet, but this is an updated list from the DDN:

OK, I thought I had heard he was fired. Maybe he was saved by Covid.

Fordham brought in a new AD and was going "evaluate" basketball IIRC but never pulled the trigger

Belmont's Shawn Phiillips is transferring to a new prep school in Michigan. The school is being launched by Emoni Bates's dad, and it sounds like the roster will be chockful of talent.

Not sure it closes the book on Dayton's recruiting of Phillips, but I can't imagine it'll help.

• Philo's AJ Clayton: Ohio

From Indianapolis. Couple recruiting reports you can read on him from Purdue and IU. The Purdue one notes how he has taken three visits to Purdue and the IU one details a recent Zoom call he had with Archie Miller. Kind of interesting.

Blessed to have received an offer from Dayton #GoFlyers

6'5" 4 Star SG out of Yorkville, Illinois

Monster Man 08-13-2020 09:05 AM

6’8 Forward Kebba Njie from Centerville will be enrolling at La Lumiere Prep School in Indiana. Huge loss for the Centerville basketball program. According to 247, Dayton has already offered.

2022 (CA) G Ramel Lloyd, Jr. has received an offer from Dayton. http://verbalcommits.com/players/ramel-lloyd-jr

6'5" PG out of Long Beach, CA... Will Become one of the best players in his class

Ramel Lloyd, now a 6'6" combo guard from Rancho Christian School in Long Beach, CA stated in a twitter account on verbal commits recently that he is looking for a spot where he can make a big impact right away and it doesn't matter how far he has to go to find it! Of his current 22 offers Dayton was one of the first to offer as a freshman on 8/23/18. He could surely make a big impact on the Flyers!

I was told by one of his former teammates that UD pulled their offer to him long ago.

I know that they pulled his older brother’s (Mo) offer, but didn’t know Kebba’s offer was pulled as well.

Got to see this kid play recently. IMHO, he's the real deal and would be a great get for UD.

Not sure how the pulling of Mo's offer impacts the chances of getting Kebba.

Finally! Long Time Coming!

UD offers Dayton's own Top 50 6'10" Stud Shawn Phillips who transferred from Dayton Belmont to Ypsi Prep Academy.

He recently called UD his "Dream School" so we'll see

Would be the most acclaimed Dayton recruit since...before my time.

Chris Wright and Juwan Staten were both No. 61 according to 247 Composite. I couldn't find a number for Brooks Hall.

Phillips would be huge. A national recruit (he'll get some shine playing next to Emoni Bates) would continue to up the Flyer profile.

If I'm correct, the last time we had players from Belmont were the May brothers, Don and Ken.

Darnell Hahn prepped at Belmont. Played for Dayton in the early ‘90s.

Not really on Twitter, but I’ll say this:
1) Obi has proven that you can go to UD and be a (likely) Lottery Pick; and
2) Chris Wright has proven that Daytonians show a special kind of love for a native son.

Would love to have you here, Shawn! Go, Flyers!

From a Couple Days Ago

https://247sports.com/college/dayton...fer-150850440/

"Phillips has visited Indiana, Ohio State and Dayton. The Hoosiers and Buckeyes have offered scholarships, but surprisingly, hometown Dayton hasn't.

"That was always my dream school, but they haven't offered, so it might be too late," he said. "I don't really have a favorite, but the schools that are recruiting me a lot, I have the best relationship with," he said. "I'm always keeping my eyes open."

Trying not to read between the lines on this. As aggressive as AG has been since day 1 and our need for bigs in a couple years and being a local kid and now knowing UD was his dream school, makes me wonder why no offer until just now.
