Akron @ Dayton Game Thread

Akron @ University of Dayton
Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2010 - 9:00 PM

lhsgolf19 11-14-2010 11:53 PM

Projected Starting Lineup for Akron (based off their opening night lineup)

G 12 Darryl Roberts 6’0” 165 SR Toledo, Ohio
G 4 Steve McNees 6’2” 170 SR New Castle, Pennsylvania
F 5 Brett McClanahan 6’4” 185 JR Nitro, West Virginia
F 13 Nikola Cvetinovic 6’8” 230 JR Loznica, Serbia
C 44 Zeke Marshall 7’0” 218 SO McKeesport, Pennsylvania

Keep an eye out for PG Alex Abreu who comes off the bench (very good player freshman from puerto rico) and Brett McKnight (who only played 13 minutes in their opening night blow out due to rarely practicing (suspension))

This will be one heck of a challenge!

Chris R 11-15-2010 12:27 AM

Zeke Marshall was a big time recruit. He will be a load. If we do not show up, this will not be pretty. Akron is always at the top of the MAC.

C-time 11-16-2010 04:37 PM

Here is the link to the Fox Sports Ohio Broadcast that will streamed. So if the Xavier game is running long you should be able to watch the start of the UD game there.

vclark34 11-16-2010 05:32 PM

This will be a good test for our bigs to see if they can deal with a strong center. Maybe kav will see more minutes to help provide some muscle on the defensive end. All in all should be a great game.
Go flyers!!!

UDBaby 11-16-2010 06:29 PM

Very happy that this game is in The Arena. The Zips are always tough so better to be playing them on our floor, especially this early in the season.

The Flyers should take care of business....

lhsgolf19 11-16-2010 09:01 PM

Stream is up and running!

C-time 11-16-2010 09:06 PM

And X is in overtime. I'm glad the stream is good.

flyerfanatic86 11-16-2010 09:06 PM

GO FLYERS! And go IPFW hehehe

_avier going to OT with IPFW.

AC91 11-16-2010 09:15 PM

just turned it on a few minutes late...what's been going on?

San Diego Flyer 11-16-2010 09:15 PM

I don't understand the mechanics of Gametracker, but it always seems to be irritatingly constipated.

Sid Louick 11-16-2010 09:16 PM

Only one substitution in over 4 minutes?

kiefaber455 11-16-2010 09:21 PM

These kids from Akron don't miss

AC91 11-16-2010 09:23 PM

Woohoo!!! I have it on the TV now!

GlassCityFlyer 11-16-2010 09:35 PM

.........who really watches 30 MINUTES of cavalier post game....

Who watches 30 minutes of Cavalier games?

frisco flyer 11-16-2010 09:45 PM

Offense is looking much better than last game, but the defense is still work in progress.

San Diego Flyer 11-16-2010 09:45 PM

SPEARMAN ! what a stud. D-1 body and floor recognition already.

Swampy Meadows 11-16-2010 09:45 PM

Ralph Hill with the "put me in, coach" look on his face.

ChiFlyer 11-16-2010 09:45 PM

wow is this team athletic...can really get up and down

kiefaber455 11-16-2010 09:46 PM

Brandon Spearman is going to ease the loss of Marcus Johnson

JDflyer 11-16-2010 09:48 PM

I'm starting to really like how Spearman plays basketball end to end....and I notice the student section still likes to cheer the USA chant for out of country players.

Ralph is going to need people to get in foul trouble for him to get many minutes.

Swampy Meadows 11-16-2010 09:54 PM

Hard to believe that Dakota Euton was an early commit to UK under Billy Gillespie and he's the 5th guy off the bench for the Zips.

kiefaber455 11-16-2010 09:54 PM

A guy whose first name is Dakota comes off the bench and hits a 3--WTF

AC91 11-16-2010 09:55 PM

Ummmm....Juwan might just be quick. wow!

kiefaber455 11-16-2010 09:56 PM

How nice is it to have a player that can finish like JS.

Swampy Meadows 11-16-2010 09:56 PM

In the JS iso, I think the Flyers have found the end of half/end of the game play that they have been lacking since Brian Roberts graduated.

C-time 11-16-2010 09:57 PM

Paging Chris Johnson! Paging Chris Johnson! Please come to UD Arena.

GlassCityFlyer 11-16-2010 09:58 PM

good first half, staten reminds me of Brob with his driving floaters in the lane, I guess this season we see what would happened if Brob would have had a supporting cast his senior season

Canonball 11-16-2010 10:00 PM

Juwan is quick quick quick. For the most part making all the right decisions. Couple of bad ones as well.

JP is going to be a fan favorite when he's hot and a fan scapegoat when he's not. He's got to figure out when those quick three's are no good ... particularly when he's not squared up.

I like Spearman's spunk. Big men playing decent on the boards and also looking like they will generate some O this year as well.

We've got good depth on this team and will get contributions from the bench consistently this year.

Our weakside rotation is slooooooooooooow. We've got to do better on screens as well. Defense needs to tighten up a bunch.

PerrymanFan 11-16-2010 10:01 PM

I am loving the point guard play so far. Staten is a total playmaker and Parker is fearless from downtown.

ChiFlyer 11-16-2010 10:03 PM

Love Spearman's energy and physicality

Staten doing a good job managing the game and looking for his shot

SHQCKEY 11-16-2010 10:04 PM

Part of the problem is our bigs show really hard on every ball screen even 25-30 feet from the basket. It's just unnecessary that far out and right before the half was a perfect example when they got a wide open 3.

jack72 11-16-2010 10:04 PM

Great half and CJ did not take a shot. Good half by Benson. We shot over 50% and great rebounding. Defense was so-so.

lilrudy4787 11-16-2010 10:06 PM

i get the feeling that parker is a rob lowery clone when it comes to shooting...very streaky but when he is on...HE IS ON

FlyingArrow 11-16-2010 10:07 PM

The scoreboard looks good, but Akron had way too many wide open 3s. Good thing they didn't hit too many of them.

kiefaber455 11-16-2010 10:07 PM

2nd half
-need to shoot FT's better
-need to come out and not let them get a run and get some momentum

Canonball 11-16-2010 10:07 PM

.... and we still look inept from the ft line. grrrrr.

Yup. We're going to love it when it's working and hate it the other nights.

kiefaber455 11-16-2010 10:11 PM

Guaranteed that Parker never does an 0-fer for a game

udx2 11-16-2010 10:16 PM

Getting tired of watching Akron drop 3s

ChiFlyer 11-16-2010 10:18 PM

Parker is a far better spot up shooter than RL

SHQCKEY 11-16-2010 10:18 PM

Just gave up 13 points before the 1st media timeout.

Swampy Meadows 11-16-2010 10:19 PM

There is no need to for the UD guards to double down and leave the Zip shooters wide open.

AC91 11-16-2010 10:20 PM

I am liking this year's version of Paul Williams!

and Akron is on fire.

kiefaber455 11-16-2010 10:22 PM

Do thesse guys ever miss?

C-time 11-16-2010 10:22 PM

Never throw the ball to Kavs while he is running!

JDflyer 11-16-2010 10:23 PM

Most teams don't miss when you double down and leave too much room b/w yourself and the defender on the weakside.

Amen to that. We are helping way to much and leaving them wide open. I could hit some of the looks they are getting.

kiefaber455 11-16-2010 10:26 PM

Same thing as last year--they let teams back in

FlyerFanatic08 11-16-2010 10:26 PM

someone wanna tell the team to get a hand in mcneese face? he can shoot

FlyingArrow 11-16-2010 10:27 PM

Tied up.

kiefaber455 11-16-2010 10:27 PM

Anyone else think it's about time CJ showed up?

Canonball 11-16-2010 10:27 PM

We don't need the soft double downs that leave the akron shooters with a set three point shot in rhythm. argh.

AC91 11-16-2010 10:29 PM

that was NAAAAASTY!

FlyerFanatic08 11-16-2010 10:30 PM

they can shoot! get a hand in their face! wow...

UD62 11-16-2010 10:31 PM

11 point lead gone, down one. Not a confidence builder.

Canonball 11-16-2010 10:31 PM

We are asleep on d and their shooters are licking their chops.

SHQCKEY 11-16-2010 10:31 PM

BG, PLEASE make an adjustment and stop helping off of some of these guys. I find it hard to believe we don't have the athletes to defend some of these guys one on one.

C-time 11-16-2010 10:31 PM

Still Paging Chris Johnson!

kiefaber455 11-16-2010 10:33 PM

UD can't hit a 2 and Akron can't miss the 3's

AC91 11-16-2010 10:34 PM

That's it CJ!

udx2 11-16-2010 10:35 PM

Hopefully, that will get CJ going.

Buster Goode 11-16-2010 10:35 PM

have we not figured out that they can shoot lights out?

Flyer 86 11-16-2010 10:40 PM

was wondering this after last game, but there is something like the junior drop off. with all the new players and mix, could be an unJohnson like year for Cj. Esp. with all these expectations on him.

FlyerFanatic08 11-16-2010 10:40 PM

this is bad bad basketball. BG needs to fire the guys up

kiefaber455 11-16-2010 10:41 PM

I've heard of a "sophomore slump", but never a "junior drop-off"

AC91 11-16-2010 10:43 PM

I like Spearman. tough.

kiefaber455 11-16-2010 10:47 PM

50% from the FT line--it's gonna bite them in a$$

Flyer 86 11-16-2010 10:49 PM

Searcy huge board and bucket. here's where we pull AWWWAAYYYY

kiefaber455 11-16-2010 10:50 PM

McClanahan can't shoot off the dribble

San Diego Flyer 11-16-2010 10:50 PM

This type of game will pay dividends later in the year. Akron is a good ooc matchup.

The real Paul Williams just entered the building !!

ChiFlyer 11-16-2010 10:52 PM

Interesting to see that BG goes to Parker during this run

A couple huge plays with the Searcy follow and PW steal and then pull up

I don't know how the rest of the MAC is supposed to be, but I can't imagine this team not being there in the end

kiefaber455 11-16-2010 10:55 PM

can't shake these friggin' guys

C-time 11-16-2010 10:55 PM

REBOUND. Their last 5 points were second chance ones.

bcross 11-16-2010 10:56 PM

Same $#@%, different year.

udx2 11-16-2010 10:59 PM

Searcy is my hero

kiefaber455 11-16-2010 11:01 PM

Anyone else think that BG shortened his bench the 2nd half?

Snackman 11-16-2010 11:02 PM

Anyone else think we really got the benefit of the doubt from the officials in the last minute? No doubt Searcy's basket should have been waived off. He was definitely over the back.

A win is a win though and I'll take it. :)

great great block by CJ.
2 huge plays by Devin.

overall good game and prob. player of game for Wright.

tough one. Good prep for Ole Miss.

gotta learn to get out on the shooters

Buster Goode 11-16-2010 11:03 PM

what could have been.....what could have been....

Devin Searcy suppressed on the bench behind Huelsman for three years.

Two double-doubles in first two games as a starter. Does anyone know how many double-doubles Huelsman had in four years?

Buster Goode 11-16-2010 11:04 PM

I really like Paul Williams too

Canonball 11-16-2010 11:06 PM

That will be there for Juwan all year. We have three finishers around the bucket, they just have to be ready for the pass or the rebound and put back.

We've got a long way to go on defense.

I really like the new guys.

I think we need Juwan in the game late on point. Pretty obvious difference in the handle and confidence to make the play.

San Diego Flyer 11-16-2010 11:06 PM

Wright and Searcy with double doubles---again. Two games in a row--wow.

Whine whine.

The right player started last year and now this year.

Canonball 11-16-2010 11:11 PM

Gotta trust the bigs to play defense and stop the double down nonsense ... or if you're going to double down be decisive. The half commitment help nearly killed us tonight. They were just spotting up and dropping those shots with ease. Man to man and let them try and beat us down low.

C-time 11-16-2010 11:11 PM

So I guess Searcy just doesn't have all the intangibles, but at least he can score and rebound. If only BG would have let the Big Dog eat before this year.

ChiFlyer 11-16-2010 11:13 PM

Can we not get over Kurt? Seriously, we need to move on.

This was a nice test and nice to see them respond down the stretch

There's quite a bit of difference watching Searcy play this year vs the previous 3 years. His shooting alone has significantly improved from under 40% his freshman year to around 50% his soph year to 58% as a junior - he's shooting around 80% this year

You must have some serious man love for the UD point guards the past couple of years if you think Kurt's play was the reason we weren't more successful

anthonycharles 11-16-2010 11:45 PM

Some people just can't move on. They need to rehash the same bs year in and year out. It gets real tired.

Anyway, tough game tonight. Those guys can shoot. The sr's stepped up and won the game for us in the crunch. Our defense leaves a lot to be desired. This team has a lot to work on, but I'll take this win any day of the week.

AC91 11-16-2010 11:46 PM

http://www.daytondailynews.com/dayto...f-1003070.html

See the quote below by Devin about Kurt. Kurt was the anchor of a class that accomplished more than any other at UD in the last 25 or more years. Let's celebrate that while we celebrate what Devin can do for us now.

“I talked to him today and earlier this week just to let him know how much I missed him” Searcy said. “I’ll always remember how hard of a worker he was — how he did it just to make the team better — and how he didn’t expect anything in return.”

we used to win many many games with Keith and gang outrebounding other teams about 6 or 7 years ago, outrebounding teams by 7 boards and grabbing 38-40 boards consistently.

we had 54 the first game, haven't seen total tonight. defense needs work but we are boarding so i'm not hugely concerned.

bobber 11-16-2010 11:59 PM

Every time I've seen Akron, not just versus us, I come away impressed with how Dambrot gets them to play. I think some BCS or high major school just might take a chance on him one of these days.

masonflyer 11-17-2010 12:00 AM

Funny that we were worried about post defense this year. We gave up all of 8 two point baskets tonight. Granted part of that was our paranoia of giving up the easy basket and doubling down, but an adjustment could me made during the game.

The biggest problem with the defense is our stubbornness of bringing the big man out to hedge a ball screen 30 feet from the basket. It never forces a turnover and almost always gives up an open look because the floor is so opened up. Just let them set their little screen out there and go around it to the basket side and problem solved.
