Tom P. O'Brien

I just wanted to let you all know that we lost a true Flyer Faithful this morning. Tom is my dad and has been a season ticket holder for 20+ years and single handedly taught me everything I know about Dayton Baskeball. While he was not a poster on UDPride, he was a frequent visitor. We would both spend hours a day here looking for the latest news to see who could find it first.
Tom had several aliases when calling in to Flyer Feedback just so they wouldn't refuse to put him on to avoid him complaining about the zone offense and poor man defense. We have been coaching next to each other from the first row of section 405 for years just to see most of our suggestions completely ignored and the Flyers still pull out a victory.
He most recently applied for the Assistant Coach position for the Women's basketball team with his resume consisting of 6th grade CYO Champs!!! All he wanted was a rejection letter that he could frame and place down in his man cave with the rest of his UD gear.
He was as diehard and loyal as it gets and I know he will truly miss his Flyer family.

Thoughts and prayers Kevin. So sorry for your loss. Sounds like you had a lot of quality time together.

BeckysTXA 05-05-2017 03:50 PM

Thank you for taking a few minutes during the most difficult of times to share a little of your father with the Flyer Nation. He was clearly one of the most faithful of all. Applying for the assistant coach position story is priceless. Prayers to your family.

He and Rita will be watching all of the games together now!!!!!

Just a day before passing the nurse asked if she could get him anything. He politely replied "A point guard!" Go Flyers

So sorry for your loss. I know that it was difficult for you to sit down and give us some history of this great man. You can now take delight in all those memories during those 20+ years. Many stories to tell and enjoy over and over again and get a laugh or two as he would want you to!

So sorry to hear. Your story is one of the reasons I love sports. Sports can create a bond between two people and create memories that last forever.

Prayers for you and your family.

Kevin your dad is a great guy. I treasure the seasons I coached CYO with him. Your dad was always the brains and I played "cat herder" to help him out. I have a team picture of your dad and the 3rd grade SAY soccer champs on my desk.

Prayers to you and your family. Your father/son relationship sounds as if it couldn't have been better. Cherish the memories!

Kevin, did your Dad have a brother named John that went by Jack and another brother named Jim? If so private message me please

So sorry for the loss of your dad. Thanks for sharing a snapshot of him. He's got a recliner at sidecourt now. God bless.

Well, has she come up with one? ;)
Thanks for sharing, and may your memories lend you comfort.
