Having read the Indiana boards, no one seems to think Bruiser will be the lead assistant! Remember Archie never designated a lead assistant at Dayton. Seemed to keep everyone on pretty equal footing. What Bruiser probably will be is Archie's new Allen Griffin. Heavily leaned on for game planning, strategy and a strong east coast recruiter (like Allen Griffin).

The prevailing theory over there seems to be that Groce (who is an Indiana guy) is holding things up as he is in play for Akron job. IU has told Indiana beat reporters a formal staff announcement will not be made until next week, and this could well be the reason for the delay. Much like Kevin Kuwik was leaned on for game planning and strategy as well as midwest recruiting, that would be Groce's role too.

Then Ostrom slides in as the national/international recruiting guy. The one who organizes the master recruiting matrix and who personally handles many of the top recruiting priorities, the guy who interfaces with AAU coaches, scouts international guys or national prospects outside the traditional recruiting footprint.

The difference between the Dayton and Indiana staffs of course is head coaching experience. A Miller, Groce, Bruiser, Ostrom staff would have tons of experience.

So the question for Ostrom would be: does that staff afford him the opportunity to grow and take on additional responsibilities to prepare for success in a head coaching role? The answer could be no, but it also could be yes that in he would have three head coaches to absorb info from.

Being named "associate head coach" would be nice, but if Archie can manage to win national championships at Indiana, you can make the argument that Ostrom would be set up really well for future jobs. Because if you want to hire the hot assistant from Indiana, who are you going to give an interview to? A previously fired head coach or Ostrom? Depends on what you're looking for, but Ostrom could be positioned as a homerun hire there. If AG offered Ostrom "Associate Head Coach" is that really better?
