They were competitive, but thoroughly mediocre under Everhart 99-89 (46-50) in his six years. I understand they would love to get back to mediocre, but at the time Everhart's abrasive personality was eroding any capital he had earned. He actually had some young talent transfer before he was fired for this same reason. He couldn't make the tournament with the A10 POY.

Dukes were looking for a coach to take them to that elusive "next level." Perhaps they should have been more patient. Progress is rarely linear. But there were some valid reasons to get rid of Everhart at the time.
