He's smart to keep his options open. There is not a clear path for him to make the Cavs roster. We can sit here and say he's better than Jordan Clarkson, but it isn't that simple.
The Cavs currently have over $35M committed to PG's for the upcoming season. George Hill is making $19M, Clarkson $12.5M, and Sexton at $4M+. They would likely have to trade away one of the other 3 to make room unless they want 4 PGs. They aren't trading Sexton and good luck finding a trade partner for the other two. Clarkson has two years left on his deal and nobody wants that contract. Hill can be cut after this season as only $1M is guaranteed for next year, but that doesn't help Scoochie now.
The best bet for Scoochie with the Cavs would be a two-way contract. Unfortunately each team only gets 2 and the Cavs have already used both of theirs.
So as it sits, there isn't a spot for Scoochie on that roster, and it's not because of a lack of talent.
