NONCONFERENCE RECORD: 6-7

The key to Fordham's success is to, well, do everything better! More specifically, the team under new coach Tom Pecora needs to defend (13th in the A-10 in FG% defense); find someone to help Chris Gaston rebound (Fordham was 11th in rebounding margin at -3.5); and locate some more shooters (28% 3PG, 13th in the league). There are a lof of new faces, however, so it's impossible to predict how good the newcomers are and how quickly Pecora can put his stamp on the program.

Fortunately Fordham loaded up on home games vs. very beatable teams, which could prevent the Rams from being such an RPI anchor on the A-10 like the program was last year. Still, I might be generous assigning Fordham six wins in noncon play. I am gambling that Pecora will at least get the Rams playing hard and digging in more on defense. That's what nearly all of his Hofstra teams. And one of the recruits, 6-10 juco Kervin Bristol, has a rep as a premier shotblocker. If he pans out that would be huge for Fordham.

The Rams start out with five straight home games and all are winnable. However, I predict an opening-game loss to a decent Brown team with a good returning core (for an Ivy League squad), putting Rams fans back in a temporary panic. The panic subsides with win over a weak Sacred Heart program, but resumes in a close loss to Hampton. Hampton thwacked Fordham down south last year, but the program graduated several top players and is ripe for the picking. The Rams bounce back with wins over LIU and Hartford.

A two-game road trip - the first games away from Rose Hill - ends sourly as the Rams lose to Lehigh and Harvard. Lehigh is one of the favorites for its conference and Harvard returns lots of vets from a 20-win team, though star Jeremy Lin has moved on to the NBA (he's on the Golden State roster).

The Rams return home and take advantage of a Manhattan team with huge roster turnover from last season. Then St Johns comes into Rose Hill for a rare visit and smacks Fordham good after a competitive first half. Lavin's Johnnies return all five starters from last season's NIT team. The Rams console themselves by getting revenge on a so-so Kennesaw team the very next game at home. (Fordham lost at Kennesaw last year.)

Finally a three-game swing down south and out West. Ga Tech trashes the Rams and then Fordham loses a tight game to American in San Francisco. They finish the noncon slate with a win over a Delaware team that lost 24 games last season.

BONUS A-10 PREDICTION: 3-13 (9-20 overall)

THe Rams pair up with Bonaventure, Rhode Island and Temple (which replaces Xavier from last year's sked). There might be a win, perhaps even two, in this group if every thing that went wrong last year goes right this year. Yet every game will be tough for Fordham and I don't foresee any road wins for a team that went 0-16 in conference play (first time that's happened since GW in the early 1990s, I believe). Crediting the Rams with three wins might be very generous, but frankly, the league would be much better off if Fordham turned out to be that competitive. It would a clear sign of Pecora having an early effect.
