On Saturday, we beat Oklahoma in a mid-afternoon contest, and got to watch it on the widescreen that UD had setup in the Fieldhouse (Frericks Center). Went back to my house in The Ghetto, and 3 of my housemates were sitting on the steps with sad sack looks on their faces. I said, “Why are you guys so depressed?! We’re going to The Sweet Sixteen! We’ve got a shot to be in the Final Four! Uhhh...where’s the couch?” In unison, without saying a word, they gestured with their thumbs to the corner of Kiefaber and Lawnview, where a mountain of debris was in the middle of the intersection, with flames blazing 20 feet high. Yep. There was the couch. So, we conned, er, talked our landlord into letting us have a beat-up old couch as a replacement for the rest of the school year. He did, and one of my housemates went so far as to bolt it to our concrete porch. “They’re not getting this one, by God!” Well, I went on the LA trip with the Pep Band, and flew home late on Sunday after losing to Georgetown. I got back to my house, looked at the porch, and saw 24 angle brackets still attached to the porch...but no couch attached to the angle brackets. We burnt a couch my senior year at the intersection of Lawnview and Kiefaber. I think it was maybe April timeframe, perhaps just a delayed reaction to the Flyers finishing 7-20 that year with an 0-12, last place finish in the final year of the Great Midwest?

	Ghetto UD GHETTO Student neighborhood surrounding the campus of the University of Dayton. Unique to UD, the Ghetto gets its name from the nickname students gave the depression and war-period row houses the university owns and rents to Dayton students during their course of study. The landlord arrangement and compact nature of the neighborhood homes create a camaraderie among students outside of class that provides personal space away from classrooms and on-campus dorms. Parties and celebrations on Ghetto streets are legendary and have made David Letterman's Top-10 List. A significant effort has been made in recent years to curb hooliganism and renovate older homes.
