Congratulations UD Flyers

I understand the season is not over yet. This team has exceeded my expectations which were low coming into the season.

The team finish 14-17 last year, lost one of its leading scorers as well as a number of players. Most of those players who left were non contributors, but the team would have only one senior, still short on players and four new questions marks.
- Cohill - unproven freshman
- Toppin - redshirt freshman and unproven
- Mikesell never was mobile on defense due to injuries and surgery. Would he recover?
- Matos - Never know how JUCO will perform

Right away the team loses Matos and had to play with limited depth all year.

I did see some optimism during practice last year. I was impressed with Toppin and thought he could contribute. I was not as impressed with Mikesell, but I am not sure he was recovered from surgery. I was wrong about Ryan.

During the summer, one of coaches told me that Obi improved dramatically over the summer. Both Obi and Ryan have been great additions and difference makers for this year's squad.

Never did I expect 21 wins, 3rd place in A10 and outstanding road record in the A10. I understand the A10 is down but UDs A10 schedule was top loaded with VCU, St. Louis and Duquesne twice and with Davidson and Bonaventure on the road.

Virginia has lost only two games all year. UD hung tough against them. I'm not into moral victories but that performance helped UD believe they could hang with anyone.

OOC had expected losses but I hoped they could have won against Mississippi State and Tulsa. The did not but my expectations were still low. After UD was picked to finish 6-9 in the league.

A10 performance was much better than expected including taking a 16-2 VCU team to that last minute twice. They won at tough places to play; Bonaventure, Rhode Island, Davidson and Duquesne. Check out Archie's and BG's records at those locations. Yes, they had some tough A10 losses, but every team has tough league losses.

This team has more games to play. They have shown grit and determination. The team has lots of weaknesses, but they have stayed with it during the long season. They should be very proud of their effort.

Would I like to see UD in the NCAA? Who would not? The odds are against them but... they are capable as anyone or better of winning the A10 tournament. If they do not, I will still be proud of what they achieved. It is important to be realistic about the talent and skill you have on the floor and proud of their efforts.

There is great optimism for next year, but there is still basketball to be played this year.

If you are one of those who say the program is not performing if they miss the NCAA, then I suggest you whine about all those Super Bowl losses that Bill Belicheck has. And keep reminding us how Belicheck was a failure with Cleveland and Baltimore.

I am more than pleasantly surprised how the season has gone thus far. The Flyers have a history of playing poorly on the road and we have done OK with that, especially considering our inexperience.

I know a few weeks ago I did not see them finishing as high as 3rd.

I nice run in the A10 tourney or even winning it is icing on the cake. Heck,, I would take a deep NIT run to get these guys tournament type experience.

I think the road victories are a very positive sign for the tournament and next year.

I don't understand why anyone would have had low expectations this season. It couldn't be much worse than last year. I expected at least 20 wins. Once they got rid of the deadwood and the disgruntled after last season, the only way to go was up. Larry Hansgen was right when he described it as addition by subtraction.
As everybody should know, there is no such thing as a perfect season or even a perfect game. You just have to have faith in the team overall. They may not make it to the NCAA, but I'll still be proud of them.

If Williams and Crosby and Svoboda and Kostas and Miller hadn't left the program, there wouldn't be room for Watson, Tshimanga, Johnson, Chatman, and Matos.

I'll take my chances with the latter five all day and twice on Sunday.

Maybe "Exceeded tempered expectations"...

I know my opinion was they were going to do better than last year, but I didn't know how much better. So far it has been much better than I thought it was.

This year’s team is definitely special. They have won on the road as few teams before them were able to do, which is especially impressive considering there were only 3 upperclassmen available for the entire season, and 1 of those 3 was coming off surgery on both hips. And, after 2-1/2 seasons of watching teams with obvious chemistry issues, it’s fun to watch a team that’s focused on winning instead of whining. Granted (no pun intended), that could be an issue next year with 6 players coming in to get minutes with only 1 player graduating, but that’s where the mantra of “you help us win more, you play more” will need to become the focus.

Yes, it’s been a pleasant surprise to see this TEAM develop this year. I’m looking forward to enjoying watching them the rest of the season, for as long as it lasts.

Addition by subtraction occurs when you subtract negatives from a positive.

My original expectation was for us to be in the conversation for an at-large bid. We were right there. I think had we not lost Mottos, we would have beaten Mississippi State and Tulsa, probably Rhode Island at home too. Everybody always has a bad loss, so I’m not naïve enough to think we wouldn’t have dropped a bad home game along the way. I think with those three wins, and the bubble being what it is this year, we may have been in. That said, I’m still proud of how this team overcame that loss and figured out how to win without him. Watching Ryan on Saturday night in person was special. He went after every 50-50 ball he could. OB is just **** special and we all know that. I am excited to see what happens this weekend and beyond!

Pleasantly surprised with the season given how little depth we had. They never quit after being down big against GW and VCU that to me showed a lot. Yeah the MSU and Rhode Island games hurt but those games happen to everybody

Really sets the stage for next year given what we have coming in. Like the way AG is doing things, lets keep it up

Yep..This team has to at least get to the A10 champ. game to not only build real momentum but to really stamp itself as a real top couple teams in the A10 this year,imo....They need to reward themselves with that honor. I believe if they reach the final that they're going to win it..

I think this year we exceeded the A10 road wins we had in the entirety of BGs tenure.

Probably an exaggeration, but it was nice going into road games and not feeling totally helpless. I agree that it was a good season, exceeding expectations.

I adjusted my expectations after we played UVa, and we met those, a top 4 finish.

Now, if we want to make it a GREAT season, how about winning the A10 tournament, something else we don't tend to do too often?

Special -adjective
"better, greater, or otherwise different from what is usual"

Obi - special
Next year's team - possibly special. Looking good.
This year's team - let's see how they do this weekend. Having to win the conference tourney to get in the NCAA is a spot a lot of teams are in. Not all of those are "special"

I agree with you - just making an observation
Mentioning we didn't go undefeated doesn't take anything away from what this team did
Next time I will post trigger warnings for you!

Obi - special
Next year's team - possibly special. Looking good.
This year's team - let's see how they do this weekend. Having to win the conference tourney to get in the NCAA is a spot a lot of teams are in. Not all of those are "special"
Definitely “Gooder”.

So somebody gave me a red pip for this. I quote "Dumb. Williams and Crosby would be gone next year anyway. I repeat, dumb."

Now, my reputation on here is about 5439th on the lost of things I worry about. But I thought I'd call the poster out to drop some facts on them. Yes, it's true that Williams and Crosby (and Miller, whom you missed) would be gone next year anyway. But if they weren't gone THIS year, their roster spots and scholarships wouldn't have been available to hand out to guys like Watson, Johnson, Tshimanga, and Chatman. They'd be on a bench somewhere else right now.

So again, I'll take my chances with those guys all day and twice on Sunday. Peace.

Vegas agrees. UD was 1000-1 for winning the championship before season and they are 750-1 now. Pretty good considering their only road to getting in the tournament is to win this weekend.

My tOSU son took his UD gf to BD's Mongolian grill last night for dinner and My Team walked in right behind them. My son/gf are friends with Trey so they just joined in the fun. My son said it was a blast and it's amazing how high the boyz are able to stack their '1-serving' bowls with food....he also said Josh is a large man and Obi's voice doesn't match his size. As we all know, and was reported back to me, My Team gets along great both on and off the court which is something that was hard to say a couple years ago.

Which makes me even more excited for next season when we'll be deeper, stronger and closer.

King Rollo the Speculator...OUT!
