Huge award as the AP is considered one of the big three awards along with the Wooden and Naismith.

I have to say that Obi was one of the best decision-makers on the floor that I have ever seen. He was always making the right pass or decision on shot-taking. Grant had a whole team full of good decision makers playing like a real team and winning like crazy as a consequence. All of that reflects on Grant putting that roster together and getting their heads in the right place to focus on the team concepts.
What a year!

And interestingly, that was also in the A-10 - Jameer Nelson and Martelli.

AP Coach of Year began in 1967 ... Player of Year 1961.
Other AP COY & POY from same school: Jameer Nelson & Phil Martelli ( St Joe '04), Mark Aguirre & Ray Meyer (DePaul '80), Bill Hodges & Larry Bird (Ind St '79), Scott May & Bob Knight (Indiana '76), Norm Sloan & David Thompson (NC St '74), Wooden & Walton (UCLA '73 & '72), Wooden & Alcindor (UCLA '69 & '67), Elvin Hayes & Guy Lewis (Houston '68). Toppin & Grant are the 11th in 60 years, and third in the last 40. Elite company indeed.
Rash of them in 70's, like triple crown winners, ha ha ...
Won't do that every season but need a baseline level of excellence to become a power.
POY List

COY List
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Associ...ch_of_the_Year
Other schools with (1) POY: Notre Dame, Kentucky, Michigan State, Kansas, Villanova, Xavier, Georgetown, St John's. It's hard to do.

Naismith put out tweets today for each of the five finalist. If you like the tweet the player gets an extra vote. A few minutes ago Garza was running away with those "likes" over 4000 to Obi's 980+.

He'll probably say "I told you Grant was a bad hire. He still hasn't made an NCAA Tournament." He already criticized him for the team he'll have next season.

When Iowa first put out the crap about how Obi and UD didn’t play anyone so Garza was better I thought it was in very poor taste, but my opinion began and ended there.
Now I see Iowa fans bashing Obi as he is winning POY honors, saying he doesn’t deserve the awards because UD didn’t play as tough of schedule as Iowa and Garza. Now I’m ticket off, but I know what needs to happen.
Neil...call Iowa today and lock in that home-home contract starting at UD Arena for next year. Iowa...either put up, or shut up.

UD basketball has had some very good to excellent players in the modern era. Some I've had the pleasure to either see play or hear them play via radio.
Is Obi the GOAT?
Don't know that is totally certain and am hesitant to make that claim because human beings tend to emotionally go with what is directly in from of them.
Someone in a post in some recent thread stated that it's hard to compare players from the 60's (for example) to current style and make up of the game. I agree. But just using the 'eye' test Obi ONE was certainly 'eye candy' to me and alot of others, including those outside the program (i.e broadcasters and sports pundits).
And that I think is the central point.
TV coverage of all college BB and in particular UD this year has helped raise awareness of Obi's play. Had the same level of player* occurred in the late 60's and mid 70's UD would have only risen to this kind of note worthy attention when the NCAA T had been announced and UD would have been on a few TV screens. We were an independent for most of those 2 decades. The recognition would have come late in the season and would have had to overcome all the news about the 'big boys' in the consciousness of the national media.
* Understanding full well that that player may have been prohibited from
'dunking' and having a slower pace to the game with no shot clock etc.
Yet in conclusion, Mr Obi One has elevated himself and in turn the program far beyond the expectations of years gone by. Deserves all the accolades he is getting. And will for a very long time be discussed and included among those great players listed as part of this programs' history.

I went over to one of their blog sites and it was quite comical. There is just a lot of ignorance and emotion on the part of a few. When it is pointed out that Obi dominated against the P5 schools we played they just move the goalposts.

POY doesn't mean best stats. There were a lot of guys with stats equal to Obi's and obviously Garza's were gaudy in a tough conference. But Garza also led the Hawkeyes to ELEVEN losses in said conference, among those hapless Nebraska and a 36 point arse kicking vs a very very average Purdue team. That, and the 2019-20 A10 was not the "big two, little 12" conference of past years.
Congratulations Coach and Obi!

Obi could have had gaudier stats, with a lower efficiency and poorer team performance. I feel that was recognized in the AP votes. I didn't like the volume scorer for Marquette getting first team honors. I watched that guy numerous times this year and he was an extremely selfish player, often to his teams detriment, IMO.

I agree with this 100%. The goal of an AG team isn’t to put up a NPOY candidate. My guess is there are some players who left the program because AG has no interest in game planning to get whatever player so many shots per game.

I find it amusing that Iowa fans are saying that Luka is a better player cause of stats in a better conference and that UD fans would gladly trade Obi for Garza. However, NBA GM's seem to be telling Obi that he's good enough to be drafted in the top 10, while they are telling Luka "ehh.... maybe round 2". I'll trust the NBA people here, but personally there is no way in hell I'm trading Obi (or Crutcher) for anyone in the country last year.

Dan Patrick asks Grant to put his name on a chair on UD's bench... in honor of him never making it into a game there.
Said he was the best warm-up player Dayton has ever seen (and that he kept track of his stats from each warm-up).
He an AG had a good back-and-forth about DP getting his name on something in the arena

Keep in mind they will apparently have the best player in the country and we will not have Obi. Should be a cake walk for them based on all their whining. I’d love to say we called to schedule them, but they were too scared they might take a road loss.

Iowa lost 12 friggin times. If you are a NPOY, you must make your team and teammates better than that.
Obi could have led the nation in scoring -- eaaaaasily -- and averaged a 12rbs a night if he wanted. He was the most unselfish post man in the entire country. He wanted to win...not win NPOY. Obi made everybody around him infinitely better. Thats the mark of greatness. Anyone can simply stuff the stats. Chip Jones did that.

Come on, I know that the SOS based on opponents' records favors UD. But it's completely unrealistic to contend that UD's schedule was even a little bit better than Iowa's...never mind "27 vs. 94" better.
The old RPI SOS is based on wins and losses...counting stats, with no adjustment for quality.
Note that I am certainly not trying to defend Iowa's cretin fans here. But I do try to be objective. A fair comparison of the two schedules:
Dayton 7 quad one games (3 Q1A)
Iowa 16 (7 Q1A)
Dayton 8 quad 2 games
Iowa 6
Dayton 8 quad 3 games
Iowa 4
Dayton 8 quad four games
Iowa 5
Note: a Q1A game is the top half of Q1.
It really isn't even terribly close.
All that said, Dayton was a much, much better team than Iowa. And if you switch Toppin and Garza, Iowa is better and Dayton is worse. And that's all I need to know to know who is the more valuable player.

I just looked at the pictures posted by the DDN of Obi over the years. We forget that we watched him grow from a young boy to a man. . . .we are so used to the Obi of this year, but when you see him three years ago, you realize that Coach Grant and the program had a lot to do with where Obi is today in terms of strength, conditioning, and skills.
So much fun to see him over the years! Good luck Obi. We are so proud of you and so appreciative.

Exactly. Just proves the implicit Power 5 bias in voting for Garza. If Crutcher wins POY next year, a lot of people
in the basketball world will be calling for investigations and dying of heart attacks. But never fear, the voters won't let that happen . . . just because.

Not really impressed with all these COY awards for Grant, I mean if Archie was still here he would have won all of them for the last 3 seasons.

Heck, an assistant or 2 would have probably won COY also.

No, Archie would have been runner up, his assistants would have swept them the last 3 years, no doubt, had Neil been smart enough to promote them, prove me wrong!

Neil...call Iowa today and lock in that home-home contract starting at UD Arena for next year. Iowa...either put up, or shut up.

BeckysTXA, Iowa is just like any schoolyard bully. They talk a good game, but when it comes time to “put up or shut up”, they never want to face the challenger. Paper tigers, most of them.

Love what Gary Parrish said in the wrap up. "There is no way to intelligently argue against Anthony Grant for Coach of the Year". then said The Flyers were "undenialbly capable of winning the championship"
Grant's post announcement interview

If you didn't watch it online today, don't miss tomorrow at noon for the Player of the Year announcement. About a half hour show.

And if it doesn’t, I hope UD gives him a bonus anyway. With the NCAA cutbacks it might not be an option to pay a lump sum, but hopefully they work out a payment plan over the next 3-5 years because he certainly deserves some compensation bonus.
How important all those sellouts this year may play if budgets get squeezed this fall.

POY - COY chart was still missing accolades for another member of the "team" but that has been corrected.

What's funny is they think the PPG and RPG tell the whole tale. They don't realize that Obi was incredibly unselfish and easily could've tacked on a lot more points per game. The other thing is when they use the schedule in their argument but never argue against Dayton being ranked 3rd in the country, which really is the deciding factor in Obi winning it and deservedly so. Obi could have had more rebounds also if the Flyers didn't have to be very careful with his aggressiveness inside on defense to keep him from fouling out, which he went the whole season without doing.
I enjoy watching a marginal Big Ten team whining and crying over an award that was properly placed.

I feel the sportswriters, who made up the bulk of the voters in the major POY awards were informed enough to put Obi's numbers in context. If you watch him play, you realize that he is well-rounded/versatile and unselfish enough to put incredible pressure on the opposing defense all the time. I think that we were threatening the all-time 2pt efficiency record in the NCAA all year long. The pick-and-roll duo of Crutcher-Toppin was so good it was almost unfair.

The most efficient offense in the country running thru the best player in the country. The notables realize Obi could have averaged 24-25 ppg and 9-10 rpg along with another couple blocks but, as mentioned, any of those increased actions could have easily caused him to get into foul trouble more frequently. With Chase out and Jordy a mpg liability, the discipline of the coaching staff and Obi was pretty incredible.

Agreed, and if he took as many shots as someone like Garza he would have been in the 25-27 point range but his efficiency may have suffered a bit. He was the most efficient time player in the country of those scoring more than 18 points per game.

On the SVP show last night, they said he was one of only 4 players to ever achieve the points per play level that he did since EPSN started tracking that metric.

He also gets dinged for his defense, and this may affect rebounds too, but it always felt like Grant coached him to really try and stay out of foul trouble. So in a similar way he sacrificed some offense for team efficiency, he was also so important to the offense and team, it wasn't worth it for him to get too aggressive on the boards or defense for large stretches of most games. Heck, didn't he have one game with zero fouls??!! Orrrr, im wearing red and blue glasses and he needs some defensive work
