Instant fan of wherever he goes. Cavs would be ok, but it would actually be nice to go to a franchise that isn't clueless. Then again, I'd get to watch all the Cavs games.

Happy for the kid. You could not have asked for a better representative of the University of Dayton. I can imagine it was hard for him to leave, but it was the only logical decision. I would have worried every time he made a cut that his knee would blow out and his career either put on hold or over.
Congratulations Obi! You can walk away knowing you made a difference. That is all we can ask for in life.

If he winds up at Golden State, I may have to become a Warriors fan. I always did like Steph, but how could anyone outside the bay root for the stacked team once KD joined them?
He can't end up with the Lakers or Celtics or with Russell Westbrook, so it won't be hard to root for his team wherever he goes.
Thanks Obi!

It's amazing how much he developed in his years at UD. I've not watched more than 15 minutes of any given NBA game since the 90's. I'll be tuning in to see how Obi is doing though. Thanks to Obi and the whole team for this extremely entertaining year of Dayton Flyers Basketball. I won't ever forget this team.

Especially after what the players did to poor John Beilein

Obi, you don't need luck because you already are truly blessed! We have been truly blessed to witness your abilities on the court and your personality in how you represented the University of Dayton and the city of Dayton off the court.
In your twitter you thanked everyone you could possibly think of and didn't leave any one out. I wanted to thank you personally! Here's to you landing on a team that makes you happy in the next chapter of your life.

Watching Obi (and this team) is the most fun I've had watching the Flyers. As a Minnesota guy, now I'll cross my fingers he ends up with the Timberwolves.
He'd fit in great right next to Karl Anthony Towns.
Regardless - I'll root for Obi no matter where he lands. Good luck Obi!!!

Obi declaring for the NBA draft made the sports report during the 5:00 news on WDIV here in Detroit. The fact that UD grad Shawn Ley works there may have something to do with that.

Thank You Thank You!
Loved you playing with this team ....
As CBSSports stated (paraphrasing) " College basketballs most exciting dunker "
You elevated the team, school and fan base when we seemed to have needed it the most ...
And again Thank You as being stuck inside my house I have found some entertainment by viewing all these twitter and CBS, ESPN, etc. videos that were produced all season long based upon both the team and your play!
PS Find someone who has your best interests at heart (a la as coach Grant and staff have done these past 2 years) to show you how to invest and save some of that $$$$$$ so you have a secure and well-being life. Money doesn't cure everything but it does allow you freedom to live life better ...

I agree with this writer. Not that Obi isn’t really good, but his game does not fit Cleveland’s needs.
I know an NFL tight end that was struck on a team early in his career that ran an offense that only wanted the tight end to block. His skills were as a pass-catching TE. This was in the late 80s, early 90s when players did not have any rights to change teams.
Finally Plan B arrived and he was left unprotected. End up in the right type of offense for his skills. Was All-pro multiple years and has three Super Bowl rings.
I hope Obi gets drafted by a team that needs his skill-sets. I don’t think Cleveland is that team.

Mavericks. One for one replacement for Dwight Powell who ruptured his Achilles tendon and is out indefinitely.
That position is a key to making the Doncic and Porzingis duo work efficiently. Mavs are trying to get by with less talented subs. Would need a trade to pull it off.

A few former Flyers have played for the Knicks, Chuck Grigsby and Don May come to mind immediately. If Obi does get drafted by the Knicks I might have to trek into the Garden and see him. I haven't been to a pro basketball game in years!

I'm just hoping that Obi is lucky enough to get on the team that wins the NBA championship next year. First, because he was cheated out of a national championship opportunity this year, and second, it would continue to be a great story that gives UD a lot of free press.
It really hasn't been discussed much here, but UD has lost multiple millions in potential NCAA tournament dollars. I don't want to think what that could have done for UD Athletics as a whole.

In Rhode Island, the students were taunting Obi by telling him the Knicks would draft him.
I thought that was one of the most clever student taunts I have ever heard of.

Obi would be a great fit for the Portland Trailblazers.
Weren't there a couple of other ex-Flyers who played in Portland?

I'm wondering if there will even be an NBA season next year. Not sure why Obi had to declare so early in March, perhaps to silence the daily noise from fans and media.

I have a contender...Bill Bidwell ( St Louis-Phoenix-Arizona Cardinals). He use to charge all his players $100 per month for soap. Just took it out of their paychecks.

It seemed a bit early, but I think Obi is ready to feed the audience with NBA thoughts and move on from the massive press he has been getting, attributed to past exploits. Which has been enormous. He's somewhat over it all. I'm sure his camp would welcome the NBA speculation. It cost him nothing to declare a little early, especially in this dead spell of sports news in general.

That will be a tough deal for coaches if kids can wait til August to withdraw. Take Crutcher, if he decides in August to stay in the draft, what are Grant's options at that point, slim and none.

Agree, except the NBA doesn’t make decisions with NCAA in mind. They will do what is best for themselves...ie their pocketbooks. (Safety of players, fans and employees not withstanding.)

This stuff about his defense may end up being spot-on. But I think something might be missing with people who did not watch his entire college career and put it within the context of the UD team.
As I watched his career at UD progress, and knowing the depth chart at UD and his value to the team, I felt that Obi was being coached to be inert when his man had him out-positioned around the hoop. I felt he would offer up just enough resistance that he would very rarely be called for a defensive foul. I thought that it was a strategic team decision on the part of the coaching staff, and not a lack of Obi's ability on defense. There were a ton of plays where he could have gone for a block, but at great risk to picking up a foul. I thought it was self-discipline and good strategic coaching that held him back.
I don't know if that assumption is true, but I think it is very possible.
I guess we will find out when he hits the NBA.

There's not much defense to speak of in the NBA. I wonder if it's really a concern for NBA teams, or just the pundits who opine about such things?

Highest I’d take him: 6th pick
Lowest I think he’ll be available: 16th pick
Ceiling: somewhere between Enes Kanter and Amar’e Stoudemire

A lot of the analysis is very fair, his closeouts were very poor. I will say defending OBI's around the rim defense that a scout this year may not necessarily see is that he was making concerted efforts not to foul.
His freshman year he was in foul trouble all the time. This year there may have only been 1 or 2 games where he had any foul trouble or worried about fouling out. I think he'll be able to find some middle ground being more physical on defense and not worrying about fouling as much.

Amare is a good "best case" comparison...as athletic as Obi is he isn't what Amare was in his prime. Never seen a big man as explosive as Amare, he was incredible
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-TtugILCWw
Don't get the Enes Kanter comparison since he's not really an athletic big.
Another NBA comparison I like is Aaron Gordon, but I think Obi is more skilled and just as athletic

That is priceless. His reaction on the turnaround three against Kansas is THE moment of the video, followed closely by his stunned expression after the between-the-legs dunk. Fun stuff! Guy clearly doesn’t follow college hoops, though. Hadn’t heard of Obi? Hard to believe.

This guy is a certified nut case, but really funny as an off-the-wall NBA tracker who knows NOTHING about Obi. The buildup (as described by Fly) is hilarious. The climax is worth the wait.

If you are still alive 30 years from now, you'll be telling people about the year you watched Obi Toppin set a world record for most ESPN Top-10 appearances in a calendar year on his way to the National Player of the Year. Also, the world got sick.
To see this man do his thing in a UD uniform is the unfulfilled dream in every Flyer fan that was finally realized. Only 10x better. Its a privilege we'll never take for granted. Never. Not in this town. It wasn't just what he did. That alone was best in breed. It was how he did it -- the guy who won the Naismith playing team ball in spite of the Youtube clips.
I hope one day he comes back and finishes his last year of school, gets in the UD HOF, and they create a bronze statue outside the UD Arena entrance with his Superman dunk pose and face of joyous rage where people take selfies and try to mimic his pose. When you win the Naismith and Wooden -- dammit -- you deserve sumthin'.

I just read the article above. I have read multiple articles and interviews with Obi Toppin. To me, the curious thing is that there is no discussion about his agent. In some player-agent relationships, the agent has a bigger personality than the player. Is this agent going to get the best deal for the player? Does this agent’s bad relationship with a particular basketball franchise lend that team not to select this player or the reverse. Does a particular club like to deal with a particular agent? I have seen none of this discourse? I understand that Obi’s agent is “creative artists agency”.

That becomes much more of an issue in subsequent contracts. The rookie 1st round picks are slotted. While there is a little flexibility in the slot. The precedent is well established.

CBS Mock Draft going on today
https://www.cbssports.com/nba/news/2...-at-no-6/live/
No. 2 pick: Timberwolves - Obi Toppin, Dayton
PF | 6-9 | 220
Pick grade: D
Gary Parrish selects Obi Toppin for the Minnesota Timberwolves at No. 2. Hate. Hate. Hate. Minnesota's already got a ton of deficiencies on defense, and they select one of the weakest big-man defenders in Toppin. Struggles moving laterally. His fit on offense should be awesome next to KAT and D-Lo, but this makes an already-bad defensive team worse.

We all know the Obi is not a great defender but I think with time he can at least be adequate. Giving the pick a D is ridiculous. How many NBA all stars are great defenders?

I think the primary reason he was not a great defender for the Flyers is he could ill-afford to commit fouls. For the last two years we did not have the depth to pull him off the court. You can teach defense; you cannot teach his level of athleticism.

I don’t think the grade is a reflection on Obi. Rather a grade for the guy making the decision to not address their current roster problems of weak defensive players. If the Timberwolves are weak on defense, they should address that area with a strong defender.

Obi must be going crazy... having to now wait till October for the draft.
Most likely spending his time, figuring out which pre-approved social justice message he wants for his jersey.
I say Obi should buck the system, and use his own social justice message... and his message should some from last years Dayton team - FAMILY !

Sending "messages" is the last thing Obi should do. Blending in with his new teammates is job 1. The rest can come later if compelled after he has accomplished something in the pros.
Obi is a class act. Why tarnish it.

Speaking out for social justice 'tarnishes' one's reputation? Not in my book.
SDF: I will post my reply - a Lawrence Ferlinghetti quote - in the off-topic forum where it belongs.

Mixing politics and social justice messages with sports in ruining the enjoyment of watching games. Spectator sports should be about entertainment and a temporary escape from our current reality. Everything has been politicized and everyone thinks their opinion must be voiced. I just want to watch the game!

Couldn’t agree more. Wonder what the reaction would be from if players decided to wear apparel with slogans like defund Planned Parenthood or Build the Wall?

I thought we were talking about Obi Toppin, but I guess I misconstrued the name of the thread.
But you can stick it wherever you want.

Yes, stick to sports. The NFL and NBA are sinking into the abyss with their political involvement. Desean Jackson just pooped his pants with his comments. It is so refreshing to see those few pro players who actually talk about the sport...ala Nick Chubb!

Gary Parrish and Matt Norlander have a good discussion on Obi and the draft on the Eye On College Basketball podcast (under 25 min)
NBA Draft Profiles: Why isn't Obi Toppin in the conversation to be the No. 1 pick?

I don’t understand why 22 years of age is a negative for the NBA draft position? I know that I have changed, a lot, since I was 22 years of age. Are the talking heads saying that Obi is at the top of his development Cycle and can’t improve from this point? I guess the talking heads call that a lower development ceiling? WTH (heck)?

In nearly all of the discussions about Obi and the draft, much of the talk is about stats and numbers, etc. IMHOP, too many overlook his value and unselfishness as a teammate and quality person. I know the NBA is a cutthroat business, but if I am building a team I would look for talented individuals who are also good teammates. So many talented players come with baggage and a sense of entitlement. Obi is not one of those.
