Seems like a logical move for the Highlanders. They are much more geographically aligned with the American East teams than with the Atlantic Sun. My son is an NJIT grad and a NJ team so I follow them somewhat. Fairly new to D-1 hoops. School is located in Newark used to be Newark College of Engineering.

They've come a long way in the few years they've played D1. They were 0-27 one year.

SMU's Feron Hunt tells me that he's withdrawing from the 2020 NBA Draft and will return to school next season.

Entrance fees and exit fees from some of these lower level leagues are relatively low. NJIT paid the Atlantic Sun conference a $200k exit fee, and NJIT paid the America East conference a $200k entrance fee.

There was only 1 multi-bid year, 2019...Belmont at large, MSU auto.
3 of the the last 5 years, the OVC auto bid was a 15 or 16 seed, the other 2 were 12's.

Murray was one of the potential replacements for the Wichita spot Valpo got in the MVC. Belmont was mentioned too but they apparently don't want to leave the OVC since it's a bus league and travel costs would go up
The other issue with Murray is where do they put their football team in the Horizon

Yeah, but the MVC may not be expanding further beyond 10 teams, so that door might be permanently closed for MSU. And what if the A10 hypothetically asked Belmont to join, would they still say no because of increased travel costs? And would MSU say no to a hypothetical A10 invite if it meant having to move their football program to a league worse than the OVC?

Below article says that both Belmont and MSU have been approached by various leagues with an invitation to those leagues, and they have declined the invites, perhaps they declined because rule #1 in joining a different league is to not leave a 1 bid league for another 1 bid league where it will be harder to win the auto bid.
A couple problems with that: MSU wanted to join the MVC, which is considerably tougher than the OVC, and also, Belmont has already earned an at large bid, and MSU would have gotten an at large in 2012 with a rpi of 22, joining the HL IMO would make earning an at large bid easier for both.

The A10 must not have been one of those leagues. If they A10 called it would be a no-brainer, MSU football be ****ed. I stand by my idea to add MSU, Belmont, and UNI and go to 16 league games.

Today's anecdote: The only sporting event my dad took me to regularly as a kid was the NIT. He knew a guy high up at MSG and would get us great seats--a long way from the $2 GO seats I normally bought. In 1968 we went to the NIT quarters. First game, Fordham-Dayton. NY kid...

Wonderful article on Luke Frazier! Even before his commitment to the Flyers, I had spent hours and hours watching his videos, hoping he would be a Flyer some day. In a previous post I likened his game to Luke Kennard's. He handles the ball well...could play the one, two, or three. He has a nice three-ball and is surprisingly quick in getting to the paint and climaxing with a really strong pull-up jumper. Perhaps his greatest trait is how well he sees the court and craftily makes timely and accurate passes to open teammates. On top of all of this, he is a player who will no doubt spend four years as a Flyer and Coach Grant will mold him into an outstanding player.

Updated today...no significant changes that I noticed from the last bracket.
http://m.espn.com/ncb/bracketology?src=desktop
A little bit on Robert Morris U. joining the Horizon League.
https://www.espn.com/mens-college-ba...postseason-ban:
In addition to removing Oklahoma State from the latest bracket, recent changes in conference membership have created at least one other adjustment. On June 15, Robert Morris announced its move to the Horizon League (from the Northeast Conference), effective July 1.
While certainly a positive change for the long term, the Colonials were likely to enter the 2020-21 season as NEC favorites. That will not be the case in the Horizon, as Wright State is a borderline Top 100 team and will be the consensus choice to win that conference. We'd slot RMU in the No. 3 to No. 5 range in the league's pecking order for its debut.

Per Jon Rothstein twitter on verbal commits, Tre Mitchell's last 10 games for UMass in 19-20: 22.0 PPG, 8.9RPG, 50.8% from the field. Far and away the top talent in the Atlantic 10. Not including one Obi Toppin! At least I hope he was referencing the upcoming 2020-21 season.

I believe the user would have to re-post it which you can do using Instagram's live replay feature. I'll see if I can find it today and post it here, or ask Koby to repost it.

I’m thinking it will depend on what happens with the NBA season. If it goes as hoped and planned, there may be a season. If they can’t keep COVID out, there will be no season. Even if we play, I doubt there will be fans in the stand, which ironically could be just what the doctor ordered for Chase! How about that for a silver lining?

Keeping covid 'out" doesn't appear to be a strong point in the US. all things being equal, we are screwed.

It seems that some schools are coming around to the reality that sports will not happen in the fall. Eventually all of them will as will the NFL and NBA. The best solution is moving everything to January/February. It would be brutal for football in the north but nothing else makes sense. It all hinges on a vaccine.

This Decision Will Be Made By
the univesity Presidents or the Governor. UD and others must protect all students in their care. I do not believe sports will be played this Fall or Winter.

Jablonski tweet 8:15 pm
Zimi Nwokeji shared photo today on Instagram of himself at Dayton airport with caption reading, “Let’s get it.” Lukas Frazier wrote, “Peace out 440.” A video with Dwayne Cohill said this was his last day at home. Looks like Flyers are returning to campus for 1st time since March.

Two SLU managers break down game film on Ibi Watson. LOTS of highlights. Make sure you read all the replies (about 15 of them) for their full breakdown.
Dayton Flyer Senior Guard @ibi_watson_2 is one of the most efficient scorers in college basketball. This past year he posted splits of 49.8% FG - 39.3% 3P- 84.5% FT. Only 3 other players in D1 had similar splits min. 200 FGA’s. Let’s dive into his scoring prowess… THREAD

I'm curious how the offense is going to look this season. AG's first 3 years he had Josh Cunningham and Obi who could score around the basket. This year it seems like the strength of the offense is going to be on the perimeter with the front court being unproven. It'll be interesting to see how things change up

After reading this I get the feeling that last year's red shirt may have had more to do with acclimating himself to college, college basketball and his new surroundings and less to do with his skill development (although a year of that never hurts either). If I am right it might bode well he will be more ready to contribute than anticipated. Looking forward to seeing him in action!

I hope so but we really don’t know. The only observed sample size (one exhibition game) is extremely small and skewed since it was against a D3 team.
All that said, spending a year guarding Obi Toppin can only make him better!

And most of the time in the game were against the D3 reserves.
We just don't know his capability. Clearly, he has a D1 body.

I thought about that the other day. I think the right thing to do would be to expand the tournament to 96 teams. I’d also suggest a team must have a .500 record overall. If that were to happen, watch how fast the power 5 conferences would make sure they get a few non conference games in so they can get the get the 7-11 conference record teams a few cupcake wins to get them to at least .500

This is already a requirement for a team to get an at-large bid. Conference tournament winners do not have to abide by that rule.

Can you provide any support for this requirement of a .500 record or better? I know some other sports - such as volleyball - have this requirement. However, I cannot find this requirement for either men's or women's basketball.

NCAA waived this requirement last week for fall sports this year.

David Jablonski twitter this AM:
Just talked to Dayton coach Anthony Grant for the first time since May. He said all 12 scholarship players arrived on campus the week of July 13. It took about a week to get everyone cleared for training. Focus has been on conditioning, individual skill work in recent weeks.
In other news, Trey Landers will be playing in the Beo Basket League in Germany. I believe same league Brian Roberts played in. Top League in Germany.

"cleared for training"... I have to assume that means all players were tested for Covid prior to their return (just as all other UD students are being required to do).
Tells me they were are all either clear of the virus, or have already had it (if they were all cleared in a weeks time).

All it took was an announcement we all knew was coming I guess? I hope people keep sleeping on Chase, especially the opponents scouting us.
Laughable to me how little the "experts" seem to know about what we have coming back. I'd rather fly under the radar anyway, but it is a bit of an indictment on their research. Parrish and Norlander didn't even mention Jalen in their hour-long podcast about notable returning players. And we are not ranked in the CBS top-25+1. I hope all the players are taking note of this blatant disrespect.

Did they just think that the 3rd ranked team in the nation was made up of Obi Toppin and a bunch of scrubs? You would think they learned their lesson by ignoring us last season until we came within a fraction of defeating Kansas and winning the Maui Invitational!

Objectively, from a national perspective, we have 1 returning starter who averaged more than 10 points and we lost over 40ppg and a majority of our rebounding. So, I get it.
As I’ve mentioned before, I’d prefer to look at the glass half full. This team will have 4 seniors, two juniors who were both Top 100 recruits, and two players joining who were in the system last year. The team will have to prove themselves but I think they will—assuming they are given the opportunity...

You've a point, but I guess I expect people who do this for a living to read a little deeper into things. I've said this before on this forum and I don't think it is hyperbolic at all to suggest we have one of the best (if not the best) back courts in America. We know what Jalen/Rodney/Ibi can do and they are ALL seniors. We've seen glimpses of what Cohill can do and he is a junior and a proven defender.
I guess I'm silly for expecting anything different. Even with Obi/Trey/Ryan we were picked #3rd in the A10 and unranked preseason.

Top 50 returning A10 players https://bustingbrackets.com/2020/08/...020-21-season/
2 Jalen Crutcher
18 Ibi Watson
26 Rodney Chatman
38 Chase Johnson
First Five Out Jordy Tshimanga
These seem fair based on past contributions.
You can't ask for much higher for Crutcher. I will be shocked with less than first team all conference.
18 would make Ibi (barely) a third team all conference player. He will likely be better than 18, as he gets to be more of a feature of the offense.
I don't think Chatman cracks the all conference teams because it puts too much emphasis on points, but I fully expect him on the all defensive team.
Chase has the potential to be much much higher. I wonder what we'll get out of him. He has shown first team all conference skill when he has been on the court.
Hopefully Jordy is more of a factor since injury held him back last summer and early season, and hopefully improved mobility and better conditioning can reduce his foul trouble.
Can (Crutcher Chatman Watson Johnson Tshimanga Cohill) equal (Crutcher Chatman Landers Mikesell Toppin Watson)? Probably not. But it does put a slightly bigger lineup out there. And should shoot 3s better.
And none of that considers unknown contributions from five freshmen (two of whom have been with the team for a semester or more) and a transfer (seems unlikely he'll play but who knows).
I don't think this Dayton team falls as far as some might think. Right now I'm thinking fringe top 25, which should normally contend for the league title. I don't think there's any reason to concede the conference yet. The competition should be much better this year though. UR, SLU, SBU, UMass, and DUQ should all be significantly improved.
I sure hope they play.

I agree with all of this besides the shoot 3's better comment. Not confident Cohill, Johnson, Jordy shoot better than Mikesell, Trey and Obi.
Trey was a career 29% 3pt shooter (made 49). Mikesell 31%. (made 93) Neither are good but Obi was pretty lethal career during his career 42% and made 43.
Cohill is career 26% but only has 12 makes in 908 career minutes. Shot 36% from deep last year but only shot 1 three per 28.5 minutes. Landers (who averaged 28.8 mpg) last year averaged 2.1 attempts from deep last year. Dwayne proved he can shoot it a bit and improved compared to his Freshman season but he reduced his attempts by 50% YoY.
Johnson and Jordy have never attempted a College 3...but boy do I hope Chase hits 50% from deep

As is the case in many post season awards, the personal recognition is set up by team records and finishes. If the Flyers win big in whatever season we end up playing, Watson, Crutcher, Johnson, and Chatman will likely have contributed greatly and will be noticed for it. If we lay an egg all bets are off on individual awards. There are just too many high potential players in the A10 this season to have the individual awards go to a mid-pack finisher.

when do we get an updated roster and photos at www.daytonflyers.com? seems to take a long time every year. COVID aside, most every other school i've checked is updated, including UDWBB.

For those that don't follow Mens basketball on twitter or other social platforms:
On August 10, MBB started a series entitled "Follow a Flyer" . There are usually 3 to 4 tweets about each player One of which is a short video of Coach Grant speaking about them. The first in the seireies is Ibi Watson, They haven't completed the roster yet, but quite a few are complete.Usually they add someone every day or two.
Here is the link to the MBB account. Just scroll through to find the Follow a Flyer tweets. Some other tweets are interspersed. I found it very enjoyable.

That's a reasonable approach to what's likely to be another strange season. That alone probably dooms it NCAA-wise.

That sounds like a lot, but even if there were 512 teams, it would only be 3 extra rounds (only two extra if you count the play-in round).
512 - round 1
256 - round 2
128 - round 3

Yeah, something like only 344? or so are eligible...10 or so are not eligible for various reasons such as APR/academic progress problems, some schools are still in the process of transitioning to d1, some are ineligible/being punished due to rules violations, etc.

I bet at least two of the frosh will have breakout years.
I'm excited about this year's team and the fact that they are under the radar. Just like Obi was last year, and look how that turned out.

Rumors of Myrtle Beach Tournament moving to Orlando for a "bubble" tournament with no fans.

I saw something scrolling through FB saying that we'd know more about the college hoops season on Wednesday. It was from the DDN, or Dayton Flyers, or one of those sources. Tried to find it again but now I can't. Did anyone else see that?

Seems like the season is going to start Nov 26th (saw that somewhere) and a bunch of the exempt tournaments will kick off in an Orlando bubble. Possibility for new/additional tournament to be added in Orlando to allow more teams to generate non conference games.

I saw several tweets saying a vote on the start of college bb was to be today and that the likely start date would be Nov 21 or 25.
Also saw several places that the Myrtle Beach tourney would be in Orlando along with many others.

Based upon the weights listed on the updated roster page; we can figure out who is angling for the center position and who must play forward. Based upon the revised weights, Chase Johnson is now giving up a whopping 219 to 248 differential to Sissoko. Clearly, Chase is angling for speed in order to play forward with Zimi.

I am assuming that we are going to play the three guards of Ibi, Jalen and Rodney.

Will we have a 2 point guard offense and 1 shooting guard? All 3 will play the majority of the time? Jay B liked early last year that we had 2 point guards on the floor at the same time.
