I hope that means something to the young man that Anthony Grant was in there early and really cares about developing him as a big. He is now 6'10"! He could be a stud in the A-10 and if we got Tyrone Baker that would be a double bonus!

how big was he when Coach Grant

Any D-1 program has to realize the success of Coach Grant and Ricardo Greer. They have an eye for "budding talent." Coach of the Year developing the Player of the Year...that carries some weight.

Huggy Bear and WVU has been one of those programs. At least until recently. For a while there it seemed like everyone the Flyers offered suddenly added a Mountaineer offer as well.

Rivals.com has Rafael Castro listed at 6'9" so he has grown one inch! He is ranked 23rd out of the top 55 power forwards in the country in the class of 2021.

Call me a skeptic, but I would imagine it's more likely these schools share AAU contacts (or something more dubious) than schools saying, "Hey, UD offered; he must be a good one."

Ok,you are a skeptic-- but there is nothing wrong with that. There are a multitude of reasons that point recruiting in a direction. I know for a fact that an unnamed new coach at SMU by design would watch who Archie Miller was recruiting. We had some creds in that stretch of time. SMU had nothing going for them at the time. You know there is usually a thread of connections with every recruit that gives the hunters an edge.

Folks, the following is not University of Dayton recruiting item but it is a note on recruiting.
There is a five start recruit by the name of Harrison Ingram. He's a 6'7" 210 kid from Dallas Texas. I looked the guy up on 247 Sports and I saw a description of this kid unlike anything that I have read before. The kid has a "old man type of game". The kid has committed to Stanford. Here I quote from 247 Sports,
"A unique prospect with what many would describe as an "old man" type of game. Ingram is one of the most intelligent kids in the country both on the court and off of it. He has a bright future in every aspect of life. On the court he is kind of a point forward who uses savvy, skill and intelligence to dominate games. Ingram can play on the ball or off of it, knows how to create space for himself by changing speeds, and is one of the better passers in the class. Also, despite not being a fantastic athlete, Ingram is a very solid rebounder, and competes on the defensive end. His elite IQ and skill make him one of the best prospects in the class, and someone who will exceed his physical tools as a player and producer."

Good luck to Ian in the middle of the ACC. Not everyone is meant to be a Flyer. Let's go get Castro.

So is Daron Holmes a pipe dream, or does UD have a real shot? Would be awesome to land a top 40 type player (assuming of course he brings the other core characteristics that seem to be core in AG recruits)

Most pundits think he’s Arizona bound. But it’s quite a feather in AG’s cap just to get into his final four picks, especially at a time when campus visits aren’t happening. Would be a wonderful stunner if he were to choose UD.

DaRon Holmes recruiting
I looked at each team’s roster. Dayton offers the best opportunity at PF.
Marquette has a Senior and 3 Frosh listed at that position. All 4 were 3 stars or better, including another 4 star.
Arizona has the same plus a Sophomore, 2 of which are 4+ stars.
California has a Sr, Jr and 2 Sophs. Difference is all 2 stars but 1.
If he’s worried about Big Name, Zona still in running, but crowded (along with other issues....).
If worried may face competition for time with other players just as good and rather face weaker competition, than Cal stays in the running.
If wants to work with a National Coach of the Year that developed a PF into National Player of the Year, and there is a huge opportunity with only one other player at the position, then Dayton is the way to go.
Come on DaRon, come fly with us!!!

“Dayton has a really nice program, also underrated. They do a great job with their players and the coaching staff is really cool.”

It's interesting that one of the things he likes about Marquette is that they don't have a football team. The fans are focused on basketball.
While we have a football team, it's essentially the same vibe with the fans focused on basketball. Should be a huge plus for us.
Fingers crossed!

I started to say "plus they share an off-campus arena with the Bucks" ... but I guess UD Arena is technically off campus too (0.9 miles to be exact).
The new Fiserv Forum is also 0.9 miles from Marquette's campus, other side of I-43. Capacity is 17,341. MU averaged 15,145 (#15). We have nowhere to go but down, #23 avg 13,364.

2018-12: Marquette looked at building its own downtown arena ($120M)

2018: What does Fiserv Forum mean for MUBB?
https://onmilwaukee.com/articles/mar...v-forum-impact
We're biased about our atmosphere, for good reason. Not sure if sharing an NBA arena is a pro, con, or neither. At Fiserv, Marquette has its own wing -- offices & locker rooms.
Elite competition indeed, but we have a lot to offer. Reigning POY & COY, so unique.

Interesting. Speaking of his dad, I saw that his dad, also named Rafael, was a pitcher in the Cleveland Indians organization, who made it as high as AA ball.
Of his choices, Providence is obviously the closest to Rafael's family in New Jersey (3.5 hours away) so I wonder if that's the choice, given that he's announcing on his dad's birthday?

I think his announcing on his dad's birthday
is a wonderful thing. He is honoring his father,
and it has nothing to do with his choice IMO
no matter what he decides, I like that.

Doesn't sound like DaRon Holmes will be deciding anytime soon; nor does it sound like he's made up his mind.
https://247sports.com/college/marque...ton-152206410/
“As of now I do not have an exact decision date but it will probably be sometime a little bit after the season,” he said. “I want to be able to see how these teams play again and watch all these teams during their season. I want to see the style of play and where I would fit in the best. It's going to come down to that gut feeling. I'm going to keep talking to my parents and coaches about it and see what they think as well. People do say it's your own decision but I'd like to take advice from some people as well.”

I'm going to keep talking to my parents and coaches about it and see what they think as well. People do say it's your own decision but I'd like to take advice from some people as well.”
|
That could possibly be advantageous for Dayton. Sounds to me like he is actually researching schools rather than just being blinded by the bright lights of the P-5. As well as saying Dayton's program is underrated in his announcement/interviews, he called Grant a great coach, citing his work with forwards both at Dayton and Florida. Then:
"It's an underrated town and the fans really come out to the games and support. It's a great atmosphere at Dayton, even though I haven't been there I've heard a lot. When I posted my final four the most comments I got came from Dayton."
I'm crossing my fingers that his timetable just might allow Grant to get him on campus.
My second takeaway from this article is "DO tweet recruits (or reply on Instagram) when they name us a finalist

I know it is this season but when you can tell a recruit that this program is playing in a tournament like what was just announced (maybe not officially yet), it’s a statement that UD is not a mid major program. Perfect timing for that (non) announcement while a top recruit is visiting.
Between other UD players/recruits from NY area, Ricardo Greer as lead recruiter, getting the kid on campus, national coach of year, watching film of Obi, and just him being here the weekend before he announces, I really, really like our chances...

"So.. did something happen last night??" just doesn't sound like a OOC scheduling matter of flipping from one tournament to another.. even if a higher class of competition. This tweet feels different, like they can't announce something at this time... but will come out later (like maybe Friday the 9th?).
I have high expectations for a player related announcement (with having no inside knowledge).

So I presume Rafael's unofficial visit has concluded. Anybody hear how it went? It sure been quiet on this topic this weekend... I'm starting to think that's not a coincidence. If I'm revving myself up for no reason, please somebody talk me down .

Finally got around to watching some video on Castro. I know that highlight reels are the best of the best but it sure looks like this kid has some real Obi type traits. Runs the floor extremely well, has a good shot blocking instinct and can shoot from the perimeter. Oh yea, he can also duck.
I hope Obi talks about how the coaching staff helped get him to the next level. Not everybody can do that.

Seems to be a sit on the perimeter and snipe 3s type of player. A couple clips of him taking it to the hoop, doesn't appear to be an explosive athlete, no dunks that I saw; though at 6'9" I'm sure he can dunk. Good handle, very smooth stroke. Offered by Maryland recently

Mustafa reminds me of Mikesell with a better shot and taller. Lots of dunks in the clip I saw. Not explosive, but can get it done like Ryan did. Excellent defender and passer and can shoot from anywhere on the court.

Not sure what is going on with Powell. He is a four star that somehow decommitted or was decommitted by AR. He still has a year to grow and improve.
However, in Coach Grant and his Staff I trust.

Powell makes me concerned. I am inferring that his stock has fallen, and I'm wondering why. His choices before committing to Arkansas were mostly high major, and now they are mostly mid or low major. He was expelled from his high school. It often takes a lot for a basketball star to be expelled from a high school. Some red flags for sure.

I'm not sure that his expulsion is what is guiding Powell. He has said that he wants to be able to contribute as a Freshman. That's why he's considering ODU and UTSA. Arkansas has 2 grad transfer forwards on the roster this year. One played at Indiana, and the other played at New Mexico. He may have read the tea leaves. When looking at his current recruitment, there's little to no mention of him being dismissed from a school. I do see one recent plus. He's working at Wal Mart. Seriously. He's working regular hours this Summer. That could help him with his work ethic and appreciating the opportunity before him.
He did say that he's looking to announce at the end of October or early November. I guess we'll know something fairly soon.

Powell breaks down his Top 5 to ZAGSBLOG (November Decision it looks like)
https://www.zagsblog.com/2020/10/13/...mber-decision/
Dayton: “They’re probably one of the most unique ones because they had Obi Toppin and they also Giannis Antetokounmpo’s brother [Kostas]. They get players to the league, lottery picks and all that. They have a Top-Three pick this year. They showed what they can do with wing players like myself. It’s a very, very, very high interest for me.”
Just not sure where he is on the board right now for UD

There may be some red flags, but I'm all for giving him a chance. The fact that he has a full time job is one of the most promising things about a recruit I've ever read. We have scholarships to play with, why not? I could care less what other schools offered him. Who offered Obi?

Isn't it interesting that Castro visited campus on his own dime before pushing back the date of his announcement? He wanted to announce it on his dad's birthday, but a family issue surfaced. I just wonder if he wanted to be sure that his schollie wouldn't sail if he had to wait a few more days/couple of weeks.

It's interesting that the Providence Crier predicts that Castro goes to UD as well. Check out their analysis at theprovidencecrier.com/2020/10/12/analyzing-the-finalists-rafael-castro/.

Hilarious that they say providence has everything dayton has but a 'much larger scale'.
Dayton is better in every category aside from the conference.

We also have a much better fan base! Theirs show up only when they play a ranked team, which luckily for them happens a decent amount of times a year because of their league.

Pretty bad when I think of Providence still in this day and age and my mind races back to Ernie D and Marvin Barnes as to when they were last prominent.

Well not sure I would go that far back. They did have a little Final Four run with a guy named Pitino and a star named Billy Donovan in the '80's. They have also had a few other Elite 8 runs since then.
But those names you mention are for sure still remembered in RI too, along with a few others like Jimmy Walker, John Thompson, Jim Larranaga, Otis Thorpe, Lenny Wilkins and Ryan Gomes.

Yeah, I was going to mention that Providence Final Four team too. More recently, Providence did make the NCAAs five years in a row 2014-18 (about the same time as our run), although none of those teams did much once they got there.
If a Final Four, Elite Eight and five-year NCAA run are not prominent, then last year was the first year UD was prominent since 67.

I believe you're wrong on that when comparing prominence between the programs. Sure, they made a Final Four but I believe Edwin Moses Blvd. was still called Nicholas Road then but, again, credit them for that achievement. And knowing what we know about Pitino I would not bet against some kind of recruiting turmoil being involved with/within that program at that time or right around the corner.
UD has been within a game of a couple final four appearances since mid the 1980's with a couple Elite Eight appearances and also has had 5 NCAA appearances since 2014 and without the unfortunate Covid situation this past season UD would have been a clear #1 seed with an extremely likely chance of getting to the Final Four and possibly beyond.
To simply say UD's last prominence was 53 years ago is pretty narrow thinking even with my belittling Providence.

The God Shamgod/Austin Croshaire Providence Elite 8 team was one of my favorite teams to watch. Caught on to them late in the season, watched their Big East championship run and their elite 8 run. Led by Pete Giliam, they were a ton of fun to watch.

I'm not saying UD's last prominence was 53 years ago. My point was just that I wouldn't say that about Providence either, as the programs' results are fairly similar.
We had an Elite Eight in 84, they had a Final Four in 87.
Each had one other Elite Eight -- us in 2014, them in 1997.
Our best streak of making the NCAA tourney was four years (2014-17), theirs was five years (2014-18).
In the past 30 years, they've been to 10 NCAAs and 10 NITs, we've been to 9 NCAAs and 8 NITs.
Each program has had a few guys in-and-out of the NBA. They currently have one solid NBA player in Kris Dunn, and our hopefully solid NBA player is about to be drafted.

Their coach cries and whines ...... ours doesn't

and lets not discount the 1974 Flyers...
a quick look at the bracket that year,
tells me if Dayton had won that triple overtime
game vs UCLA, they very well could
of been in the final four...
after UCLA, UD would of played
a beatable San Francisco..
that would of led to David Thompson
and crew from NC State in a final 4 match..
Go Flyers!

passing "sorry, not with me"
skip pass right back..)
they were 1 shot away,
and coming off a blowout of 2nd in
the nation Notre Dame...
when we talk about the UD teams
in the NCAA, not mentioning the '74
team is doing a disservice to how
great they were IMO...
so will forever remember that year as a fond memory,
and in no way, shape or form drives
me crazy. It puts a smile on my face every time.
Go Flyers!

I’ll never forget being at the NCAAT game against Providence in 2015. Whenever the Providence COLLEGE cheerleaders started chanting “Let’s go, Fri-ars!”, the fans of the UNIVERSITY of Dayton took over with “LET’S GO, FLY-ERS!!” Priceless!

Sounds like DaRon Holmes will be deciding before the Nov. 11 signing period.

Speculation suggests he's heading to Tucson.

If he announces before/during that signing period, that's bad news for us IMO

Looks like Daron Holmes is announcing this weekend as well.
Busy few days for UD Recruiting coming up
EDIT: Looks like in a somewhat surprise, crystal balls are starting to flow for Marquette not Arizona... With him unable to visit us in person, it was always going to be an uphill battle.

Huh, Holmes recruitment has been interesting. Have to wonder if Justin Gainey, former Arizona assistant and new Marquette associate head coach, may have won the day for the Golden Eagles. You can say a lot of things about Wojo, but he can recruit.
Here's hoping some good news starts rolling the Flyers' way (and soon).
