I have watched nearly every game of the Knicks so far this season. You cannot believe the criticism he's getting for not being "aggressive enough", "poor defense", etc. He's averaging 12 mins per game. Typically near the end of the first quarter and again in late 3rd quarter, 5-6 minutes each time, every game, like a script has been set in stone. Whenever Obi makes even a hint of a defensive mistake, he's pulled immediately. I've seen him set pick and roll time and again, never gets the ball back - in fact most of his game now is setting picks for other players, and hanging out on the baseline wing beyond the 3 point line - as if he's told to do that. In my opinion, due to Randle having an all-star year, and there doesn't seem to be any opportunity for Obi to even be tried at a different position, his role is locked. I'm hoping that he turns a few heads on OTHER TEAMS about his potential/athleticism in the slam dunk contest. Thibideau's offense is just awful and at best, 5 guys playing 1 on 1 streetball every trip down....

Obi brings out his dad! He’s gonna jump over Obadiah and Julius Randle! He only got a 46 for it but he’s in the finals vs Anfernee Simons. And it’s only one dunk...and the judges just say Simons or Obi.
It’s Simons 3-2.

Judges seem to like shorter players who can dunk. I think Obi’s miss in the finals hurt him. I am biased but I thought his dunk was much more difficult.

Simons’ last dunk was a nothing burger. He wanted to kiss the rim but shied away from it. Obi should have won, but then ...... I’m a Flyer fan and just a little biased.

Kissing the rim is the new "he did a 360" 180 dunk. The big Aristotle wasn't fooled.

I liked Obi's first dunk best. Felt like he played it too safe on his last. Kind of wish Obi would've gone classic by leaving the deck at the free throw line ala Wilkins/Jordan on one of them. Either way, it was fun to see him representing.

Spud Webb voted for Obi as the winner. This was the only opinion that should have counted for obvious reasons.

Felt to me like if Obi had dribbled to the basket for his final dunk, (like he did one year ago to the day!) instead of just carrying the ball that would have been enough to put him over the top. It was obviously a close decision (3-2) but since Simons did not really even come close to kissing the rim (although he appeared to have the height for it), Ida gone with Obi.
(Of course being huge Obi fan, Ida given it to him if he just walked on the floor) 😜

For whatever reason the finals became a high jump competition. Cannot believe Obi didn't win. The winning dunk was just a dunk nothing spectacular.

All of simons dunks were rated way to high. I mean he jumped up to grab a high ball off the glass and basically layed it in.

After it was over...I would have loved to see Obi go back on the court and actually do the rim kiss dunk. He might not have taken home the trophy, but he would have thrown the hammer down for next year.

Just a fraction off in kissing the rim and the player would be showing a national audience how to lose teeth in a nano second. Can't imagine the embarrassment.

Obi started 2Q. He grabbed a rebound that was headed OB and saved it to a teammate. Later he pump faked on a three and hit a jumper:
https://twitter.com/nyknicks/status/1370190389957824518
He then had a stupid TO that led to a Bucks layup. 2 points on 1-1, 1 rebound, 2 TO and 1 PF in 6 minutes.

Obi came back in with a minute left in the 3rd. He made another great save on a ball going OB. he then missed on a drive to the hoop. NY getting buried by 26 and Randle is playing like dog squeeze so maybe Thibs gives him some extended run. Obi backed his man down and got credit for the hoop when it was goaltended. He had a shot goaltended again and was fouled on the play and made the FT. He then buried a three:
https://twitter.com/TheKnicksWall/st...11875238076416
With less than a minute left, Obi called for the ball and handed it off to seldom-used Theo Pinson for an open three...which he missed. That right there is a good teammate.
In 19 minutes, Obi had 10 points on 4-5 shooting (the two goaltends helped], 5 boards and 3 TO in a 33 point NY loss.

The NY Post was not as positive: “ The collapse started with pair of bad plays by rookie Obi Toppin. The Knicks’ 2020 lottery pick allowed Antetokounmpo to score over him inside. Then on the other end, Toppin threw a short pass right to Milwaukee’s Donte DiVincenzo, who raced in for a fast-break dunk and ratched up the momentum.”

perspective....
the 5 starters for the Knicks had a combined
performance of -103
in fact, every player except for one
had a minus performance....
Noel 22 minutes 1 fg, 2
points 1 rebound if I recall..
-22... the whole team contributed
deeply to this massacre...
compared to others, Obi's stats
were as good or better...

Obi had 9 minutes playing time in the Knicks 119-97 win today at Oklahoma City. His line was 4 pts. on 2 of 3 shooting, 2 offensive rebounds and 1 assist. Seems there is not enough playing time to go around! Once again he only plays when Randall rests as Randall played 39 minutes!

The ball came out of his hand before he got stuffed - not sure if the defender knocked it out on the way up or if he simply lost it. Might have been a different ending had he controlled the ball

He just lost control of it on the way up. But even if had full control - he likely still would have been stuffed. He would have needed to switch hands or something else Jordanesq to pull off going straight into a well positioned defender.

Obi got yanked after 4 minutes after fouling James Harden on a three point shot attempt. Knicks in the 4th have cut the Brooklyn lead to 7 playing small ball. I’ll be very surprised if #1 sees the floor again tonight

Obi did one good thing last night: he saved Julius Randle's a$$ from getting some serious fineage for going after ref Scott Foster after he made a BS travel call on a blocked shot that Randle recovered:

That travel call was tough, although, he never really did lose control. Does the ball sliding in his hand a few inches count as a loose ball? I would need to read the NBA rules on traveling or double dribble. Either way, not the best night for Obi for sure...

I love Obi and truly believe he’ll eventually make his mark, but the NBA is having him for lunch right now. Those were four awful minutes. I’m not surprised he didn’t get back in the game. He lacks confidence at the moment. One breakout game would do him wonders.

NYK vs the Embiid-less Sixers. Obi drove to the hoop and should have gone for the dunk, but lost control and it bounced off the backboard:

In 5 minutes he was 0-1 with 1 board and 1 TO.

The start of the second quarter on the first play, due to indecision he drags his pivot foot and gets called for walking! He is playing with zero confidence right now! On the above play at the beginning of the fourth quarter the lane opened up and he had one step on his man but instead of doing what comes naturally and making a decision to dunk indecision caused him to miss the shot! He actually wedged the ball between the rim and the backboard. He complained to the ref that he was fouled but there was no foul!

Obi, Obi, Obi. He pulled 6 minutes in the 2Q vs. the Magic tonight and went 0-1. A grand total of 2 minutes in the 4Q and went 0-2 and -8 and promptly got yanked.

Obi appears to be losing confidence. Thibs is partially/mostly to blame, but it also falls on Obi. I hope he gets it together, and honestly hope he’s traded to a team that will use him to his talents.

At the beginning of the 4th quarter Obi was on the left wing on a Knick fast break and he was off to the races! He received the ball and was looking to dunk. The only problem was that the Magic's 7 foot center Vucevic was between him and the basket. Obi got it blocked but he could have still made a basket if he had crossed under and made a reverse layup. At the very least he could have drawn the foul and gotten two free throws! He also could have circled under the basket and brought the ball back out and passed off to a guard and started the offense over. He got yanked shortly after that play!
Obi needs to make better decisions and get some confidence quickly (quickley- no pun intended) and the sooner the better. That has to come from within.

He doesn’t like contact....that has to change at this level. Every player on the team has improved under Thibs. I hope the summer helps but he has to decide to mix it up and at the least grab a rebound..

The problem with that strategy is his value is dropping in the market. Trade him now and he is a throw-in piece in a bigger name trade package. He needs to learn to deal with the odor that NBA game really gives off. Stars get calls, error prone journeymen get scraps.
No matter what happens, I predict he will have a heck of an off-season leading to a value added Sophomore year on some team. Maybe even the Knicks.

In order for Obi to EARN more playing time, one of two things need to happen:
1) Obi must become a lock-down defender and take advantage of the few offensive opportunities he'll get; or
2) The Knicks need to collapse.
As long as the Knicks are fighting for that 5-8 playoff spot, they are playing every game to win. Obi's development will take a back seat to winning, especially for a playoff starved franchise like the NYKs. If the Knicks can make the playoffs, there are quite a few super-star free agents that might take their phone calls...namely Bradley Beal in Washington.
It sucks for Obi that his hometown team got good a year too early. I'm not sure this was their plan in Year 1 of Coach T's tenure. If the Knicks were having a typical season, Obi would be getting minutes. But they're not...so he has to wait.
FWIW, the latest ESPN+ report on the NYKs broke down their present and future plans, and trading Obi was not one of the options.

This!
And it often falls on deaf ears. Others say: "they don't play defense in the NBA"...not true. And if you don't play it, you don't PLAY.

rollo: I would hasten to add #3:
The Knicks need to commit to as many pick and rolls for Obi as they execute for fellow sub Taj Gibson. Toppin is a rim runner—run some plays for him.

This is really getting strange for Obi. 7 minutes and not one mark on his stat line, good or bad. Hmm.

Obi is going to put in the work this summer. I have no doubt about that. And I hope he uses all the resources available to him including reaching out to AG for assistance in helping with the mental side of a disappointing first year if he is losing confidence. But he’s got to drive the bus. He can’t be listening to “noise”. He’s got to drill down and block outside distractions and that might include his family and NY friends. Being so close to family has advantages but it also has distractions including opinions on what a coach should and should not be doing. Obi will have to learn to block that out and report to work ready to play the role the company needs him to play, work to get better in the areas the company needs him to get better at and support the team 100%. It doesn’t matter what team he is on. Those basics will not change. Control what you can control and block out the other noise.

Obi doesn't even resemble the player he was in Dayton. I think there's a lot going on there in NY. For one, you have a coach who puts nearly all his emphasis on defense and offense is pretty much left to run on its own meaning pass the ball around for 15-20 seconds and whoever has the rock with the shot clock heading to zero, make a 1 on 1 move which may lead to an open pass to a teammate but normally its just a shot from whoever has the ball.
Secondly, Obi's defense is probably the most suspect thing about his game and he's playing behind Randle who is having an unexpected career year. Most of the Knicks offense runs through Randle and when Obi is in for Randle, the offense stalls - then out comes Obi and back in comes Randle.
Thirdly, as a rookie his teammates aren't being very generous with touches (little to any). They have no real point guard, at least one that can execute a pick and roll with Obi - and that's half of his game. While Obi can hit a 3, it's not really his game. The 3's I have seen him take, generally of the variety where time is running quickly to 0 and he's wide open and the only option left so he gets the ball with 1 or 2 seconds left; not a quality look.
I hate to say this but he couldn't have been matched with a more poorly run offense than he did with the Knicks and I really hope he gets packaged in a deal with another team and reboots himself there. It's hard to watch what's going on in NY.

DDN ran a very complimentary article on Obi and his Knicks experience to date...didn't sound like he was disgruntled or trade bait.

If you want a clue as to why this summer is critical in the weight room, just watch the clip of Obi trying to maintain blocking out leverage against number O who is half his size. Obi is built like a greyhound, not a lane-dominant frame.
If he is not on the move, he is a fish out of water. Wrong use of his skill set.
With only 30+ games left, there is no time like the present to start preparations for next season.

Obi is a very positive person. Look at his enthusiasm during his redshirt year.
Obi also has a strong work ethic.
it is also possible that the coach is bringing him along slowly and trying to get the Knicks over .500 by riding the Randle horse. His role and playing time might improve a lot next year.

Last night was painful...not a single hash mark in the book. They penetrated the lane with him in there and never even looked at him on the perimeter.
I hate to see movement with Obi as I don't want to buy the kids new jerseys, but I have a feeling there may be some movement with him. Randle is balling out and there isn't much of a supporting cast. What room does Randle provide for Obi? Unless they are on the court at the same time, Obi's options are going to be limited. He played in the first half then gave Randle a breather in the last seconds of the third and 3 minutes or so into the 4th.

Obi grabbed 1 rebound in 4 minutes of first half action. The Knicks lead the Wiz by 20 at the half, 69-49. Time to get our boy some extended burn.

Sure is. He nailed three three pointers in a row at one point and the Knicks bench was going nuts, Fourth trip down Randle launched a "heat check" three that was an airball.

Obi took a wild-ass fallaway that was a brick. He did play excellent D on one possession. And right on cue, Thibs pulls Obi and brings back Randle in a blowout.

FWIW, the Knicks lead the NBA is scoring defense and since they are also a bottom 5 offensive scoring team, defense is the only reason they are solidly in the playoff hunt.

The Knicks are also second last in the league in assists.
That also does not line up with Obi's game strengths.

Rumors are strong that Obi is heading West of NY and North / North East of Dayton and will be a Cav before the end of the week (day).
He needs out of NY and away from Tibbs - Obi seems to have lost all confidence in his game - which is easy to understand when you get 3 minutes a quarter and are pulled the first time you miss a shot or have a Turn over.
Would have liked to see it work out for him in NY - but that has not seemed likely for months now.

Pretty safe to say that Obi and Jalen miss each other badly. Neither one had the chance to play their best basketball.
It was painful watching our guards pass up open bigs because they had no confidence that the big could catch and finish.
For several reasons the Knicks guards seem to have the same issue with Obi. I hope he goes to the Cavs soon.

I’m not seeing anything from Shams or Woj or Hoops Rumors about the Knicks moving Obi. They did dump seldom-used Austin Rivers and Iggy Brazdeikis in a 3 way trade, in which they acquired SG Terrance Ferguson.
What’s the source on the Obi to Cavs rumors?
The trade deadline ended at 3:00pm so in all likelihood Obi stays put.
Note: Terrance Ferguson is a shooting guard not a passing guard— not good news for #1.

Obi got 6 minutes of 2Q run. 1 rebound, 1 steal, 1 assist, 1 block:

Still no points.

Obi is Just Like a New Freshman in College
They come out of high school as the leading scorer on their team. But are required to sit the bench until they learn all about defense. Playing time is dependent on their improvement at the defensive end in practice and in games. We'll see if Obi can develop into the kind of player his coach wants him to be.

He would have to look at the rim. He gets the ball, hands off, screens, and flares to the perimeter. Nothing going to the hoop and when he is open, they don't even look.

Obi had a fairly productive 8 minutes, even tho he missed two corner threes...he needs to stop taking those. Instead of taking a third one he pump faked and drove to the hoop:
https://twitter.com/TheKnicksWall/st...90435305902080
Later he drove to the hoop and was gonna dunk but got fouled and made 1-2 FT.
3 points, 2 boards, 1 dime:

He has taken a team that went 21-45 last year and has them 24-23 with very little roster change. He will get many coach of the year votes and will deserve them.
I'm a Bulls fans. He doesn't often trust rookies but has developed many of them into quality NBA players (Jimmy Butler, Taj Gibson, Noah). If you can't play defense in his sets you need to be a high level offensive player to see the floor.
If Obi is still not getting minutes next year after a full offseason/camp then they might have to move him but his value is too low right now to consider even moving him.

Not debating Thibs value as a defensive guru; thats all fine. But they have the worst offense in the NBA, worst assist ratio as well. Defense may get them into the playoffs but it’ll be a first round exit. Incidentally- when your leading scorer is hurting and you’re down 20+ points deep into the 4th quarter with no chance of winning- that’s a perfect time to sit your all-star player down and bring in your #8 draft pick and let him get some minutes. It will benefit both players but Thibs stubbornness is his downfall and your rookie needs minutes to develop and make mistakes in a game that’s already lost anyway.

I have watched all his games....so Thibs is a really good coach. 2 young players Barrett and Quickley are thriving and improving under him. Hell Randle who is only 26 is vastly improved with him as coach. So Obi is struggling with the physical aspect of the game. He has trouble on D and he doesn’t crash the boards on either end to make Thibs trust him. He needs the summer but he better come back with a tougher mindset.

He needs more than a tougher mindset. He needs 10/15 lbs of muscle added. This is the NBA. He doesn't have to be Hassan French, but if they want Obi to play the 4/5 on the contender the Knicks hope to be, he needs a tougher mindset AND body to stick with the Knicks and the system they employ.
I'm not really trying to pile on Obi, but rather watching him before and after the shot by RJ goes up.
Obi makes the right pass, but watch what he does after the pass. He doesn't do anything but stand there. This is what Coach T is seeing. No blocking out, no positioning for an offensive rebound. No conversion to defense. He is thinking too much. Just turn it loose and play hard every second.

Obi with the best quarter of his Knicks career. 9 points. Nice baseline left, hell of an and one, elbow jumper,, left hand throw down on a put back...few good defensive plays.

You can tell his teammates love him and are pulling for him. Anytime he does something good they’re going crazy on the bench. If he has the backing of the locker room hopefully that will be the boost of confidence he needs for this to continue

Obi and the Knicks face the Pistons here in Motown tonight. If this was a normal season, I would be at Little Caesar's Arena covering the game and interviewing #1. But this ain't any other year.
Julius Randle scored 20 points and NYK lead 41-15 after the 1Q. Obi grabbed a board, committed 2 PF and missed a hoop when he was too far underneath the basket in his 6 minutes.

Obi just came in and is playing great.
Got a rebound, followed with a flush, followed with an assist.

I only have caught about a dozen games (followed via game cast) and two things happened in those games. 1.) The Knicks will be down double digits…Obi comes in and the team either closes the gap to 2 or 3 points or goes ahead…Obi gets taken out and doesn’t get back in. 2.) Take Obi out and the Knicks scoring falls down to double digits. I guess I just pick the right games to follow. I don’t follow the NBA per say, but would like to see him get closer to the boards and up his rebound total. If he stays closer to the basket, I believe he will get some put backs or they foul him. Maybe that isn’t the way NBA game is played.

Best part is, he's not standing around watching. Make something happen big fella. If they won't give you the ball go get it.

Obi had 3 points tonight on 1 for 2 from the free throw line and a dunk with the assist from Burks at the beginning of the second quarter. In the fourth quarter he only got 3 minutes because he lost Kuzma on a switch and Kuzma nailed a three. Tibs jerked him immediately! Julius Randle had 34 points as the Knicks defeated the Lakers minus Lebron and AD 111-96 for their third win in a row.

Kostas got 3 minutes of run for the Lakers. When is the last time that two former Flyers faced each other in an NBA game?
