My 25 year old son said over the holidays that AG should offer him now. The kid is a gym-rat.
Would he start if his dad weren't the head coach? YES!

Gabe played AAU with Lebrons kid and there’s a video of LeBron and Gabe having a little 3 pt shooting contest. Kid can really shoot the rock.

I reffed a couple of his games...love the dad...kid is tough...but has to grow before I'd make an offer.

Gabe's dad Brook played at Capital for Damon Goodwin and still holds the all time assist record at Capital. Dad seems like a great guy from my dealings with him when he was at Graham and we both were involved in Dayton Metro youth ball. Lets hope the apple does not fall far from the tree
Let's hope we can keep this kid at home as a Flyer

I'll bite. How tall is he? Does he have to look up to see the dinner table? Does he need a special step to reach the hooks in his locker? Do all the girls bend down to kiss him?

With your crown and high heels on, probably.
Height has not slowed down 5'9" 160 lb. Jacob Gilyard at Richmond. While a few more inches would be nice, I would not let it keep us from offering this kid based on early reviews of his game. Building a program with local studs is a great thing. Go back and read the Chris Wright articles about staying home and others who followed from last week when he was inducted into the UD Hall Of Fame.

In terms of hype/prospect status, how does Cupps compare to a 14/15 year old Luke Kennard? If he were that level of player, you get in as early as possible even if you gamble a bit with projection.

Duquesne is playing well this year. Tavian-Dunn Martin is listed as 5’8” and leads the Dukes in 3 pt shots made. I’m fine with an undersized shooting guard if he gets results.

As someone who has met Gilyard, I can tell you, he is 5'6 at best.

To me this is the sort of player that's a HUGE wildcard. He could turn out to be a DI shooting and scoring stud, and I would not be at all surprised if that happened. He could also turn into a DIII shooting guard. And I would not be at all surprised.

Many reports list him as being 6'-2" as a HS junior, growing to 6'5" by the end of his senior year, and 6'7" after a year of prep school and entering UD.
Based upon the things I hear from people I know who follow centerville basketball and are somewhat connected, Gavin Cupp won't be a D3 player, he'll find a scholarship to a D1 roster for sure.

I’m not sure how tall Obi was as a freshman, but I can confirm that Gabe Cupps is 6’1. My son and Gabe are friends and I see him on a fairly regular basis. Remember, he’s 15 years old and a freshman in high school, he’ll get bigger and stronger.
As Rollo mentioned in a previous post, the kid is tough. He has a dedicated, disciplined work ethic that is unmatched. I’m glad our coaching staff is already looking at him as a potential UD recruit.

I officiated a game yesterday and my partner is also a basketball coach at Springboro, who played Centerville on Friday night. I asked my partner how Cupps played and he just said 'horrible. He doesn't make stupid mistakes, but he played horrible.' Then I told him about the discussion here about how UD should offer him now and he just laughed and commented on how small he is. So let's let the kid develop a bit before handing him the keys to the Campus before he even has keys to the family truckster.

I hath always prided thyself for being open-minded at all times, and this is just another example.
So yesterday I was asked to sub in the Heatherwoode men's golf league...and I accepted. I suck at golf, but love playing.
Anyway...out of nowhere, and much to his pleasure, I get paired with Sir Monster Man! After bowing, offerings and much deserved praises of my Royalty, we got down to business of golf and basketball.
Sir MM convinced me that the Cupps kid has not only developed physically, but is an absolute basketball junkie who is 100% ready for UD hoops. Sir MMs son plays for C'ville and it was obvious from his enthusiastic endorsement of Cupps' skills that this kid has abilities (round-house dunks) and qualities (leadership and win-at-all-costs) I haven't seen and which will hopefully earn him an offer to be a future Flyer.
Besides being his King, who am I to doubt Sir MM's assessments? And for that reason and out of respect to a highly regarded member of the Royal Roundtable, I am now open to UD making this young man an offer.
King Rollo the Non-Judgmental...OUT!

For the royal record, The King does not suck at golf. Like most everyone else, including myself, lack of consistency is the main issue.

4 pars, 4 doubles and 4 lost balls is pretty consistent.

I never put much stock in high school stat lines as often things are missed, or dare I say glorified a bit for recruiting purposes. But if this kids stats are anywhere near true sign him up now. I like the 2.5 /1 assist to turn over ratio, especially since the kid has just completed his sophomore season.

I've seen rims at the HS level be a "bit" softer than the college level. Plus, it's harder to shoot over a guy 6'7" up in your face than a guy 5'11".

Yes, I couldn't believe what McKinley Wright said when Archie Miller was recruiting him. Correct if I'm wrong but wasn't it something like UD wasn't worthy enough for him to play there?

i mean i dont think this is unique to just grant. i'm sure purnell/ gregory and we know for sure archie aimed high.
believe it was mentioned in an article after archie had left, jablo of DDN had an interview with archies dad...believe his dad mentioned one of the reasons archie left was because those big time players just wouldn't come.
the difference with grant imo is he has the obi effect. hes gotta strike while hot, if he can get some of these players to rise in NBA mocks and they have a few runs in the tourney we'll continue to have legit shots at getting a 5 star here and there.
missing out on last years tourney with our squad was HUGE imo. the amount of publicity the school would have got, especially if we made it to the final 4, is something we can't make up.

I thought I read somewhere that Archie didn't go after the "big" players because he didn't think they would come. I don't think the players said those things.

Yes, I think you are right! Regardless who it was Archie didn't offer because he didn't think they would come. If Anthony Grant thinks a player is a perfect fit for the Flyers he goes after them no matter how many stars they have!

I always thought Archie's biggest weakness was recruiting . . .and Anthony Grant and the time at IU confirm my opinion.

I see he had a prior offer from IA St. and he included coach Kane in his tweet so my guess is Kane has built a pretty solid relationship with him prior to rejoining the staff.

All these offers for high level 2023 recruits is interesting.
Here is something to consider: Perhaps AG knows he will have a very solid team next year…a team that can get to the second weekend of NCAA tournament and compete for an elite 8 spot. If that happens, many of these top 100 prospects would take a second look right about the time they are limiting their schools to a handful of choices.

I think it much more simple than that. We have zero scholarships for 2022 and only two for 2023 (assuming Camara is drafted after this year). When your team is full of freshmen (eligibility-wise) why not swing for the fences?

I think it is even simpler than that. I think AG goes after guys he likes and thinks will fit his system, regardless of ranking.

Maybe simpler then that - he knows Alumni and Local businesses will be able to pay the players the rates they will be looking for. The pay to players - will be a boon for schools that can get money to the players. So schools with Alumni both very passionate about Basketball and with deep pockets are set to get the best players going forward. Essentially we are back to how things were in the 50's - and that worked out pretty well for us then.

Video on Dylan James. Watch him handle the ball coast to coast! Nice three-ball and good stroke at the line. Finally, at the 2:45 mark in the video, check out his defense in the back court...very impressive.
They also mentioned in the video he is a 4.0 student.

Saw Cupps play against Miamisburg last week, IU is getting a real one. Kid gets great elevation on his jump shot which he routinely makes both from 3 and in the mid range, can drive to the basket, is great at getting all his team mates involved and promoting ball rotation, is a tough on ball defender, and have some very slick passes inside for layups. Was easily the most impressive player on the floor.

Hard to complain too much about Grant and company's recruiting, but they sure don't recruit Ohio especially well. Some real talent within an hour's drive of campus--Parks, Lawrent Rice, Rayvon Griffith, Gabe Cupps, Devin Royal, Dailyn Swain--not sure were were even a hat on the table for any of them.

We were never getting Parks, Rice & Griffith
Always believed Cupps was going "bigger" and he did.
Devin Royal we are definitely in it
Swain we haven't offered

I couldn't care less where the kids are from. Get the best players possible. If we spent all our resources on recruiting local, we don't get DeRon Holmes.

I've reffed a boatload of Maxwell's games...awesome family...solid player...great instincts...wouldn't want to play him in HORSE...if I had to compare him to a current Flyer, it would be Brea.
King Rollo the Evaluator...OUT!
