2021-22 Games of Note
Almost forgot my annual thread. Here's your 21-22 games of note thread.
Per usual, a running thread to keep comments about each nights game, some that directly affect the flyers (ie conference foes or OOC opponents) or just general interesting games around college hoops. Hopefully it also becomes a place where we can talk about rankings and who we need to lose so UD can move up the rankings
So here you go, post away.

Opening Night:
Mannhantanville @ Manhattan (only post because its the first official game of the year, tipping off in 23 min from mark
Akron @ #17 OSU (John Groce was once considered a future potential OSU BBcoach)
Boston U @ Rhody
NC Central @ Richmond
Rider @ Duquesne
Lake Erie @ Wright State (I hope Lake Erie can throw it in the ocean. errrr Lake )
_______ @ UMass Lowell. I have never, ever, in all the years doing this, ever seen the opponent as a blank; plus we play UMass Lowell.
Delaware @ Davidson
Stony Brook @ Mason
Kansas vs Mich St
Sienna @ #23 Bonna (this is kind of an upstate rivalry, I'm surprised they start the year with it)
New Orleans @ Ole Miss
Canisus @ Miami (Fl)
UMBC @ Umass (how do they handle last season's departures?)
______ @ Austin Peay Well I've now seen the no name school twice, tough way to start the season with a double header. Must be a theme for our OOC opponents this year.
MD E Shores @ St Joes
Columbia @ Fordham (battle for the city)
St Francis - Pa @ GW
McNesse St @ SMU (We play SMU don't we?)
Sacred Heart @ LaSalle
#10 Kentucky vs #9 Duke
______ @ Cal Poly ****, a triple header for the school with no name. I guess UD is destined to play Cal Poly in a 15-2 game come March
Birhgingham Southern @ Lipscom
Bama St @ W Kentucky
N Illinois @ Washington (Is Jay-Z's nephew and former flyer commit still there?)
Maine @ VTech
Southern @ Louisville (I believe our old friend is suspended from coaching the first 3 games)

You got my interest with the blanks.
I believe they are non-Division 1 schools.
Rivier @ Umass Lowell
Tenn. Southern @ Austin Peay
Westcliff @ Cal Poly

I think they may even be D3 schools (I know Rivier is). Typically the D2 schools have a name next to them and no mascot symbol. These just all had the generic blank symbol and no name. Perhaps they are NAIA school or something along those lines as well. At any rate, I definently don't recall ever seeing no name listed before.

A10 was a favorite in all 14 games tonight.
LaSalle ruined the perfect night with their OT loss.

13-1 night for the A10...yeah I know there were no wins of significance, but I'll take it. Just win baby.
Tonight:
St Louis hosts Harris-Stowe No clue why a program like SLU is playing an NAIA team
And that is about it. Most everyone played last night so I suspect the next few days to be kinda quiet then everyone comes back for game 2 this weekend.

The lower quality D1 programs are asking for too much guaranteed buy game $? So, SLU decided to go the cheaper route? Harris-Stowe doesn't charge as much.

How much does SLU average in attendance? I thought similar to UD, they would have the finances/support to get better home "garuntee" games. Could be other factors involved like another team pulling out at the last moment, or perhaps there is some coaching/athletic ties to drove the bus on this.
Under the RPI, playing an NAIA program was better than playing a 300+ program; I'm not sure if that is still the case with the new metrics.

SLU is not in the same atmosphere as UD. Only 6,880 in 2019-2020.

Chaifetz Arena only holds 10,600. Even for a sellout, they are a few thousand behind us on an off night.

Interesting notes from kenpom after 1 night of games (about 175 games):
- lowest scoring opening night since 2015
- pace of play down 1.5 poss per game from last 3 years
Since his database started 20+ years ago:
- fewest fouls
- highest 2pt%
- lowest Off Reb% & lowest Assist%
- 2nd lowest TO%
- 2nd highest 3PA%
- 3rd highest FT%

In a completely uninteresting night of college hoops, SLU outscored Harris Stowe 73-31.... in the first half. 127-54 final. I'm not sure what, if anything SLU got out of that matchup. It was their 2nd game in 2 nights... none of the starters played more than 18 min. They play again on Friday.... no rest for the weary I guess.

thursday 11/11...
GW @ Maryland (-17.5)
Hawaii, after knocking off Hawaii-Hilo is on the SLU plan and play N Colorado tonight, but I think there is some sort of 3 way setup there with Pacific as well. Perhaps something put together due to COVID travel restrictions into/out of hawaii (There are worse places to quarantine I'm sure)

GW giving Maryland all they can handle. Down by 3 with under 2 minutes to go.
Fatts Russell hits big 3 for Maryland to make it 6 with half minute left.
71-64 MD. But GW looks like a tough foe this year.

Travel costs are minimal. Harris-Stowe is closer to Chaifetz than most of the SLU residence halls, as it’s right across the street from the arena.

Perhaps it was a gesture back to the local school, an act of goodwill.
Anyhoo, as mentioned above GW lost a close one @ Maryland.
UC Riverside knocked off Arizona St on the road with a 70 foot heave as time expired to win by 1.

On to the weekend:
Its a Friday during the football season, which means there are usual a decent number of games played compared to your typical friday later in the year, tonight is no exception, though being early in the year, nothing all too exciting.
Bryant @ Rhody (-11)
Utah St @ Richmond (-6) Utah St should be pretty good, so this is a great test for da Spiders
Kent St @ X.. X struggled in their 1st game, I have no clue is Kent St is any good
Charleston So @ Ole Miss
Fordham @ Manhatten (-4.5) would be nice to see the Rams spring the upset
Penn @ Mason (-7)
Wright St @ Marshall (-3.5) seems like a pretty decent matchup, on ESPN+
E Illinois @ SLU (-21.5)
UMass @ Yale (-1)
Pitt @ WVU Decent Rivalry game, WVU is good, Pitt I'm not sure about
Va Tech @ Navy (+9) Navy won @ UVA to start the year, can the pick up another upset?
San Diego St @ BYU, should be a great matchup
SMU @ #13 Oregon (-7)
#4 Nova @ #2 UCLA
Saturday:
UIC @ Valpo
Mt St Marys @ St Joes
UCF @ Miami
Albany @ LaSalle
Hofstra @ Duquesne
Georgia @ UC
Wagner @ VCU
Davidson @ San Fran Solid test for Davidson, USF is usually pretty good
GW @ UC San Diego (seems odd they would play on a thrusday then fly cross country to play on a Saturday, bad scheduling there)
#5 Texas @ #1 Gonzaga
Sunday:
#20 FSU @ Florida
Canisus @ #20 St Bona (seems Bona is getting all their upstate rivalries out of the way)
Morgan St @ Mason

Wanna know the collective lack of give a **** about November college hoops? Two top five matchups begin at 11:30 PN eastern on a Friday and 10:30 eastern in the middle of a primetime college football Saturday night. So next time people talk to me about whether college basketball has any pool in terms of conference realignment, I will just point to this.

I agree that basketball doesn't stir the drink, football does, but the world doesn't revolve around EST either. If the games are on the west coast then the
start times seem reasonable for the fans that follow and support the teams.

Both of those games were indeed on the west coast. Friday night was Nova at UCLA and Saturday is Texas at Gonzaga.

Atlantic 10 Loses Non-Conf Battle
Conference took a hit last night with Utah St over Richmond 85-74; Manhatten over Fordham 66-60; Yale over UMASS 91-77. George Mason may be the hidden gem with a convincing win over Penn.

Rodney Chatman has sustained a knee injury in a Vanderbilt scrimmage and is out for four to six weeks. On the Vanderbilt web site, it mentions that Chatman missed 12 games due to injury at Dayton. I did not realize that he was hurt that much at Dayton.

I was surprised a little too. He scored only 95 points all year. This certainly was causal in our dismal 7th place performance.

Tough night for SLU. It was close in the first half at times, but Memphis is a much better team at this point.
Big opportunity for the A10 tonight. Maryland looked very beatable in their game against GW.

That was a massive upset BTW.
Kenpom gave them an 8% chance of winning and losing by 16.
13.5 point underdog.
Maryland ranked #20
Good for them.

Texas fans literally high-fived each other after Shaka was finally pushed out -- something they'd been begging for over the past 2-3 seasons. Great recruiter, but a complete lack of in-game coaching made him the most unpopular man in Austin.
Every single hire is a risk. Even Mick Cronin was a risk for UCLA. Tremendous consistency at UC, but hit a brick wall in the postseason based on expectations and regular season performance. And couldn't consistently beat his crosstown rival despite probably having better teams.

No doubt who is #1 as the Zags smoke UCLA. Our old friends from that league, St Mary's beat up on Oregon. I wish our guys could play some D like St Mary's did in the first half allowing only 15 points on 7-27 shooting.
St Mary's has every starter back from last year.

Frankie Policelli continues to play for Stony Brook. He’s played in all 4 games and got 2 starts. He’s averaging 6 points, mostly 3 pointers. He’s averaging 33 percent on his shots. He is listed as 6’7” and 215 pounds. So, he’s gained a lot of weight since he was at Dayton.

The Bonnies are going down to N Iowa (1-3) 90-80 with less than a minute left. Playing in Olean. Not good, will probably drop them out of the rankings since they are from A10.

Heard Paul Keels radio call of the finish this morning driving into work. OSU was down 15 at one point I believe Seg Man said, so Paul in his call says something to the effect "OSU knocks off #1 and the fans are rushing the court from the stands, the concourse and probably even some from the parking lot"
Made me laugh

Nice win for the Bucks. Watched Purdue hammer FSU, baring an upset, Purdue will be ranked #1 next week. They sure looked good. Glad to see the Dookies fall.

Glad to see Purdue at #1, as they are my second fav team. The #1 curse will get them soon.
Duke looked like an NBA team against the Zags, but they were somewhat lethargic last night.

Washington State opened up P12 play with a 51-29 win @ Arizona St. No, that is not a football score, WSU was leading 18-10 at half time. After looking like a coaching star on the rise, seat is starting to get warm for Bobby Hurley I'd imagine.
VTech won @ Maryland.
N Illinois beat Eastern Illinois and somewhere S Illinois cried
Miami won @ Penn State as noted above, however B10 wins the ACC challenge
LSU beat Ohio, wonder who Joe Burrow was cheering for?
A-10 went 5-3 (not including UD's victory), worst loss being Duquesne dropping one at home to BGSU. Rhody and Richmond picked up somewhat decent road scalps.

Not much of note tonight.
Oakland is @ Ill-Chicago.
Valpo is a big underdog @ Drake (who lost to Belmont)
St Mary's is at Utah St, which could be a fun game to watch (no clue if its on TV anywhere)
Not a single ranked team plays (washington @ #11 Zona was cancelled, I'll assume Covid, but don't know)

According to Torvik ratings, they'll end up around 14-17 and 130 in the NET. So certainly not great, and definitely not terrible but where is the line drawn b/w bad and good? I'd say they are averagish?
Torivk would also claim N Texas as Miami's best win, though that came on a neutral court in Orlando vs last nights win @ Penn St, so you could certainly argue that is Miami's best win to date.
Miami, Penn St and Dayton are all currently projected to finish the season around the same point in whatever metric you want to use. Certainly seems like UD is trending in the right direction and in best position to exceed current projections.

I don't know what the definition is I was just asking if Penn St. was good because someone alluded to Miami beating them proved they had beaten "someone"...

Belmont shredded Lipscomb by about 30. Belmont is no joke. Lipscomb was 5-19 from trey. Against us they were 10-18. Its about making -- and missing -- shots.

I was looking at Indiana's Torvik projection...he has them going 5-5 in q1 and 2-2 in q2...16-1 in q3 and q4...so .500 in the tougher games, and they are projected to get an 8 seed.
You know if we went .500 in our q1 and q2 games, people would say we lost too many of our tough games, yet IU gets an 8 seed for doing the same thing.
I think this is partially why there are ncaat upsets, the middling p5 ncaat teams are overrated and overseeded.

I see that Torvik has San Francisco as a 10 seed projection. He has Colorado State and Utah State, both in the MWC, as 10 seeds. We need to get that MWC/A10 challenge started. Lunardi has those 3 in contention for bids as well. WCC with 4 good teams: Gonzaga, SMC, BYU, and SF.

Some interesting games tonight:
Sacred Heart @ Rhody
Virginia @ James Madison (good for UVA on keeping up playing @ in state schools)
FDU @ LaSalle
Navy @ Mason
UMass @ Northeastern, would be a nice quite upset for UMass
Belmont @ SLU (I guess we want SLU to win, but a Belmont victory would be huge to keep them as a Q1 victory)
UTEP @ Kansas
Duquesne @ Depaul (DePaul is 6-1 to start the season)
#6 Nova @ Syracuse (Syracuse hasn't looked like the Orange men we know from the past)

I tried to catch the end of the SLU game, was it not on ESPN+? Didn't see it listed on CBS sports or any of the other places, I thought all A10 home games were on ESPN+, perhaps I didn't look hard enough?
Watched some of the Duquesne - Depaul Game. Duquesne plays hard, but they take a ton of quick, ill advised shots, or at least they did last night. Seem week defensively in the middle as well. I don't see DePaul on TV much, but I'm always amazed when I do how little fan support they get. There were rows of empty seats directly above the court.

tonight:
coppin St @ GW (-7.5)
Indiana (7-1) @ #22 Wisky (7-1)...I'm guessing the natives are enjoying their coaching change so far
Jax St @ VCU
Loyola MD @ Bonna
Lipscomb @ Miami (I'm not sure who the flyers would rather win)
UMass Lowell @ Boston U
Penn @ SJU
Cornell @ VTech

SLU /Belmont was on NBC Sports online streaming. I think ESPN+ is for all conference games (not on another network) and most A10 schools also stream OOC unless they are on another platform.
I found the game by going to Belmonts schedule page and clicking on the "watch" link.

thanks, didn't dig any deeper than my cable box or espn+ feed. Oh well, SLU had a decent lead, sounded like Belmont played lights out in the 2nd half.

Winless Texas Southern beats #20 Florida by 15 in the Swamp. Obviously FL has a coaching deficiency.

Fordham goes to 7-4. Are they now the A10 favorite? We will see what they have next game at Miami.
Purdue had the #1 jinx losing to Rutgers. A team they should have beat with four guys and the mascot. TX loses to Seton Hall. Baylor #1 for at least 8 days till they play Villanova.

The Crosstown Shootout was a total beatdown, Xavier won by 20. UC looked lost on offense. I was not at all impressed with the coaching job by UC hc Wes Miller, I thought he kept putting his most effective players back on the bench, we will see, but I am not sold on Miller.
UC's recruiting will benefit from being in the Big 12, they need it. They have clearly fallen behind Xavier as a program, X has won 7 of the last 9 and 14 of the last 20 shootouts.

Agree on UC front (I have a daughter who is Jr there now). They appear to have missing pieces on roster. But no sense whether Miller can get the type of players they need.
Also had the thought that I want no part of Xavier, at least this years team ... ours and theirs. Thought X was the bully (surprise, surprise).
Surprised they media coverage of 'the incident', as it was 10 year anniversary. Rather 'ho hum' in tone, just matter of fact. Shocking to me as it kind of defined the rivalry for so many years. Hate to see X dominate this series (not that I like UC, just dislike X that much more...)

UC was decimated this past spring with the removal of the coach and mass transfers. Clearly a team rebuilding and only time will tell if Miller can turn it around. Problem is if he does, the ACC will come calling.
The Big12 and "Power5 school" will enhance UC's image and should benefit recruiting immediately as the reputation of the BigEast has done for Xavier.

IMO, the fact that Brannen got fired and some players left does not excuse the pitiful UC performance last night. It was bad. X could have won by 40, it was not close. It was a total manhandling.
That is a big rivalry game, even with a first year hc and a depleted roster, UC should have had a better effort and performance. They got totally embarrassed.

Not much exciting last night. Miami OH had an 8 point lead when I hopped into the car and caught part of it on the radio, Clemson immediatly went on an 18-2 run and blew the doors off of Miami's upset bid.
Depaul came from behind in the 2nd half to win @ Ill-Chicago

UCLA cancelled their game just a few hours before tipoff, presumably COVID protocols. I guess Mic Cronin was already ruled out prior to this, so I'm guessing someone(s) else tested positive as well.
I have been wondering how long until UD misses a game due to COVID protocols either internally or with an opponent. I wonder how long before one of the players/coaches test positive. Did anyone miss a game last year because they tested positive? I don't recall.
Anyhoo, Belmont won, they are in excellent shape to earn an at large bid.
Ole Miss won
FSU won easily over Lipscomb
VCU won easily as well.
Elsewhere, Wright State falls to 2-7 after getting dismantled at home vs Akron. Still think they turn it around, I think Scott Nagy is an excellent coach, really suprised at their poor start. Though I don't follow them closely enough to know if there have been injuries or whatever.
Obviously its exam week for most schools. Only 16 games tonight, nothing very interesting.
