Butler transfer big man Bryce Golden commits to Loyola Chicago. Second add of the weekend for the Ramblers, bringing in a three-year starter at center from the Big East to bolster their frontcourt.
@CBB_Central
Cal U (D2) transfer Philip Alston tells @SInow he has committed to Loyola Chicago.
6’6 forward who averaged 21 points and 11 rebounds per game this season. Chose Loyola over Pittsburgh and Ohio. First portal add of the spring for Drew Valentine and the Ramblers.
@jakelieberman2
William & Mary transfer Connor Kochera (@c_kochera) has committed to Davidson.
Averaged 10.9 points and 4.8 rebounds. Can also shoot the ball.
@portal_updates
Lafayette transfer Neal Quinn is headed to Richmond. Quinn a 7 foot junior averaged 14.7 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 4 assists per game. Also earned All Second team Patriot league honors. Big get for the spiders, especially with Grant Golden graduating.

Javon Pickett is transferring from Missouri to SLU for his fifth year of eligibility. He posted this on IG
@jeffborzello
Had Saint Louis in the initial version of my Way-Too-Early Top 25 — and now they add Javon Pickett, solid two-way player who continued to make strides offensively. Good pickup for Travis Ford.
6'5 guard who put 11.1 ppg, 3.1 boards at Mizzou last year

The Atlantic 10 has four Top-50 ish teams --- Saint Louis, Dayton, Davidson, and VCU --- entering next season on the heels of Frank Martin, Archie Miller, and Fran Dunphy joining the league.
Best vibes the conference has had in a while.

UMass head coach Frank Martin is hiring Allen Edwards as an assistant, he told @Stadium.
Edwards played for Martin way, way back at Miami Senior High. Played at Kentucky, has head coaching experience at Wyoming.

In other news Grant Golden has applied for a waiver from the NCAA to get his 3rd PhD in what will be his ninth season at Richmond. He hopes to break the 4000 point threshold. Projections are he will accomplish this somewhere between his 289-291st game for Richmond in lat February, 2026. Asked about it, Grant was effusive in his praise for longtime coach Chris Mooney and was most happy that his 13 year old son will be behind the bench to witness the historic event, “This has been a long time in the making”.

Did you hear I graduated?
Richard Hayden:
Yeah and just a shade under a decade too, all right.
Tommy:
You know a lot of people go to college for seven years.

I know, they're called doctors.

yeah, maybe Dunphy can bring some back but you face high odds of your roster completely turning over in a coaching change these days

I think this is the perfect time to offer an up and coming coach the HC in waiting title. Have Dunphy build things and groom the younger AC until he is ready and then he can retire. I think in this situation, that would help with roster turnover in a few years when Dunphy retires.

Some turnover yes, but not when you keep losing your best players due to coaching changes.

How many of SBU's seniors are planning to return? IIRC they could have returned all 5 on a COVID year, but got the impression from their board that some may leave for other opportunities.

Jalen Adway is officially gone.
Everyone else is up in the air last I checked. Looking at their message board they seem hopeful a couple will return

I have been living under a rock and didn't know about Fran Dunphy landing at LaSalle. I hope he can make them decent. Every year there are two to four teams that drag the league down, and LaSalle is almost always one of them.

Rashool Diggins has officially committed to UMass. Frank Martin has been active here in this portal
@kylemiller_pxp
Diggins did not see much time with the Huskies as a freshman, but was a highly touted recruit out of HS
A @247Sports 4 ⭐️, Diggins was the 10th best PG in the country and had offers from Villanova and Kansas, two final 4 teams

Just mind boggling. Not sure how respected Neptune is. I'm not referring to him specifically. But if anyone told me one year ago or more that the coach of Fordham would then be replacing a legend at Nova I would've said they were nuts.
The bar has now been lowered for young coaches looking for a stepping stone. Instead of going to Dayton and winning 20+ games for 6 years to move into blueblood territory, go to a Fordham and get them to .500 for 1 season.

He'll probably end up on TV and make a nice check while having a whole lot less hassles. It's a shame too because I always felt like he was one of the few P6 coaches that did things the right way.

Neptune was Wright's assistant at Villanova for eight years.
I'll bet he had a tough decision to leave Fordham HS and return to a real basketball program.

It's quite possible that those two issues alone are what caused Jay Wright's silent departure.
Recruiting practices are facing a slimy future and the future is now. One thing that is ironic is that the cheating coaches will be no longer have as big of an edge. The new rules have leveled the playing field to a degree. Will Wade and Sean Miller will fit right in.

I would also guess those are reasons why. Jay Wright generally built his program with players that stayed and got old at VU. He probably saw this was going to become more and more difficult to achieve. It will be hard to build a program now when almost everyone else will be building a team each year.

Pretty good analysis of where this NIL is all going. Trying to make everyone IN the program happy while trying to entice a player to come TO the program will be a 24/7 work week.

Sounds like you guys are right
@GoodmanHoops
Jay Wright turned 60 in December and wanted to spend more time with his family. Job has turned into all-year deal. He also wasn’t thrilled with the prospect of having to build and re-build via the transfer portal. Only had one transfer on roster last season: Caleb Daniels.
I read somewhere that NIL and the portal speeded up Coach K and Roy Williams leaving too

I think in the past where the spring was a little slower the work load really picked up.
A lot more recruiting via the transfer portal and trying to keep your own guys. That runs into the summer evaluation period for high schoolers

Wait, I thought conference realignment, replacing RPI with NET, 20 game conference schedules, and the P5 breaking away from the NCAA already ruined college basketball?

@portal_updates
St. Peter’s transfer Daryl Banks III has committed to St. Bonaventure.
Banks was a big factor in the peacocks Cinderella run scoring 27 points against Kentucky in the round of 64. The 6’3” junior averaged 11.3 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.4 assists this season.
@portal_updates
SoCon Rookie of the year, and The Citadel transfer Jason Roche has committed to Richmond.
Roche, a 6’5” wing averaged 13.2 points, and 4 rebounds per game while shooting 40% from the field, and 40% from 3. Joins Lafayette transfer Neal Quinn, and Wofford transfer Isaiah Bigelow.
@portal_updates
Buffalo transfer David Skogman has committed to Davidson. The 6’10” sophomore started 26 out of 30 games for the bulls averaging 8 points, and 6.3 rebounds per game. Nice get for the Wildcats, especially since they’re losing star big Luka Brajkovic.
@portal_updates
Hartford transfer Moses Flowers has committed to St. Bonaventure.
The 6’3” sophomore averaged 14.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game this season while shooting 48% from the field, and 36% from 3. Earned All-American East third team honors.

I know you are making a joke here, but yes, I think all of these things (except the last one which hasn't happened) are contributing to worsen/ruin college basketball. Immediate transfers are even worse IMO and NIL is going to be a mess. Not fully ruined, but sure looks to be headed that way.
By "ruin" I mean what I enjoy and like about college basketball. Level as possible playing field for all teams involved and players that play for the love of the game and the love of their school.
Bench players transferring out/down for a better opportunity elsewhere is one thing. A system where projected starters are leaving to transfer "up" is terrible IMO.

Appreciate your insight into the moving pieces. But it now revisits the feeling I get each year when the movement of players usually leaves us out. I get extra anxious about that.
Then AG pops up with some transfer or recruit that we never heard of and I can breathe again.

I wouldn't be worried about it. It's a talented, young roster. Mali, Kobe, Koby, RJ could all be here the next 3 seasons.
With the portal and instant eligibility it seems like there's an action/reaction factor if you bring a transfer in.
Personally I'd rather keep the core together unless you can bring in all conference caliber guy

Grant always appears to fly low on the radar in off-season recruiting and really picks his spots and his targets carefully. Dayton doesn't appear on a ton of player lists. And yet as SDF says, eventually AG gets a guy he wants. Mongolian Mike was sort of that way.
I don't ever think it's a lack of effort on the recruiting trail. He just doesn't seem to be a coach that offers 40 of the Top75 kids with large blanket coverage. He picks one or two he really wants and goes for the jugular. My opinion is AG puts a huge premium on personality and disposition which is gonna rule out 80% of targets right off the top since they won't fit his mojo.

Chris, you just highlighted 2 of the things I like best about CAG:
1) He picks and chooses his recruiting targets more carefully than average and goes after them hard (think “sniper rifle” vs. “sawed-off shotgun”); and
2) He places a premium on fitting into the program’s culture.
UD is a special program. It’s “the game” in (a decently sized) town, but the core of the fan base doesn’t want to sell its soul for success (unlike some other programs that are “the game” in town). Rather, we want a team that generally keeps its nose clean, busts its a$$, plays together (not as 5 individuals but as 1 unit), and represents us well. AG knows this, and tries to build a successful team that’s a positive reflection on the Flyer Faithful. Not every player will fit that mold, and I’m fine with that. As long as AG can generally get the best players to build the best team to fit that mold, then I’m satisfied with his recruiting.

This is why I think UD can be the exception in the new chaos if AG chooses to stay the course with 2-4 year players vs. team portal every year. There’s zero sense casting aside what makes UD special and great to be just another fish in the river of piranhas

I used to follow all the recruiting stuff a lot closer and would be concerned that UD didn’t get this guy or that guy. I’d see all the movement on other A10 teams and worry if UD was “falling behind”.
I think it was Chris that captured it correctly: Worry about who UD gets, not who gets away.

Duquesne has landed FIU transfer Tevin Brewer.
Brewer, a 5’8” junior averaged 15.2 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 5.6 assists per game while shooting 42% from the field, and 40% from 3.
Some good news for Duquesne

The first thing I said to my seat neighbor at UD games when I saw him play is that I thought he would be in the NBA someday.

I think he is a year too early. He needs to put more muscle on his frame or else it will be a big challenge for him to endure the physicality of the NBA.

AG is teaching us not to sweat what others are doing. I wonder how much Camara helped with another Georgia recruit . Crean must have felt like he was being fleeced over the last few years.

They recruited him out of high school so there was a built in relationship. I'm sure Camara was icing on the cake

Wow! What's going on with the Bonnies? Until this year, they had been one of the more stable programs in the A10. I hope they can reload quickly, but that program has performed well mainly because they develop players and they keep them until they graduate. The Transfer Portal could really upend that program.

They've been aggressive replacing their starting 5 in the portal. Got one of St. Peter's stars and two other other guards. One I think was the rookie of the year in the Patriot League

Problem was they didn't develop anybody these last three or four years because the five seniors played all of the minutes, so the cupboard was going to be bare once they all graduated/transferred.

They got the theory on the 2022 bids wrong rthpough. Saying that if Davidson had beated UR that we would have been a one bid conference. In reality if the Wildcats had won, the flyers woulld have put on their dancong shoes. It's true the A-10 isn't what it once was but 22-23 should be better with a handfull of schools expected to be strong.

Virginia Tech transfer John Ojiako has committed to George Mason, per source. 6-foot-10 center, showed flashes — especially on the glass — in limited minutes for the Hokies. Should add more size to what is shaping up to be one of the bigger frontcourts in the A-10.

Surprised they don't change the name of the university while they are at it.

It was not unheard of for schools to change monikers prior to the current push. It’s just a name. It’s not crazy for current students to see things differently from students that graduated 50-100 years ago.

Left leaning person(to himself and others who agree with this): Yay!! This is another example of our colonialism and how badly we’ve treated “marginalized” groups
Left leaning person (to group): it’s just a name. Why does anyone care?
If it’s just a name, why did GW spend the time and effort to form a commission and study it???
Be honest…don’t hide behind the “why do you even notice” or “it’s just a name” crap. It’s not the traditionalists who are changing things.

Are you a GW grad? Have you invested in the school? If not, it is just a name. The current students wanted the change. That seems fair and fine. If you want to get wrapped up into a political rant, go for it. I am not going to pretend to agree with all changes on American campuses, and I’m not going to pretend that I wasn’t bothered by some changes my boys are experiencing. There will always be people who complain about change. I’m not that guy. I played diii college baseball, and our moniker was recently changed. I’m not a fan of the change. But, I’ll allow today’s student body to decide issues like that. Btw, you do realize that it wasn’t always the Flyers, right?

Although I don't think the name 'Flyers" was done for political reasons like the efforts today. It does raise an interesting question, when was the the name 'Flyers" adopted?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dayton...27s_basketball
The first collegiate basketball team began play at Dayton, then known as St. Mary's Institute, during the 1903–04 season. The school's early teams were informally nicknamed "The Saints"...
In 1920 the school changed its name to the University of Dayton and its sports teams gradually became known as the Flyers...

I Agree 100%.
Arguing from the 'it's just a name' platform to support the premise that the name had to be changed because 'the name matters' is comical at best and lunacy at worst.
But it's the same free thinkers (i'd call them non-thinkers) doing this that also will name their kid Sodapop instead of Bill, Bob, Ted, or Fred because those names are too offensive as they've read about some bad dudes with those names.
These are the same people who for decades told people that didn't like all the violence, sex, language etc. on prime time TV to 'turn of the TV or change the channel if you don't like it' are the same ones trying ban people, media, names, mascots, pronouns, statues, flags etc. they don't agree with.
I'd say if you are offended by the mascot of a University, perhaps you should simply find a different school with a mascot (if you can) that you aren't offended with or start your own.

Although I tend to agree all these issues with names of mascots can be silly at times, before it happens here (@ Dayton) we get on board to push for our own name change.
I vote for "The One's" as our new moniker.
You know. Like the sign says: WE'RE "THE ONE'S"!

Years ago I had a little experience (closer to a run in) with a young lady from Georgetown... and I was young then too ...
They could be called the "Know It All's".
But then that would be making a mockery of all these important issue's of our time.
