and Dayton loses to Akron by 15 without him.

Everyone stunk it up last night.

This is true at this point in the season. I agree with not wanting to have to admit it, but unfortunately, the defensive intensity was much better without CW in the game. He stands up and hops around, looking lost when he is off the ball. Him being out of position off the ball, means that when his guy gets the ball, he is beat off the dribble because he is out of position. Simple defensive principles.

We have offsetting penalties with him. A good chance at a double-double almost every game versus not being a good defender. He was beat of the dribble a ton last night, and the team suffers as a whole, especially CW, because the team doesn't get on the break when we are handing them layups or sending them to the line.

Defense is rewarded normally in BG's system. However, the normal offensive production offsets the defensive lapses in BG's mind with CW. Last night he didn't cut CJ any breaks on a missed assignment that resulted in a foul. He parked him on the bench about 1:30 prior to his scheduled substitution.

CW was since to the bench 2 minutes in to the second half for giving a layup after losing his man on a back cut while CJ and PW got extended minutes at the start of the 2nd half.

But I think he gets a a much longer leash than than the others due to his usual offensive production.

We had DS, CJ, JB, PW, and JP in the game and the defensive pressure was unreal on our end.

No NBA...

If this guy hasn't learned to play defense by his senior year in college he never will. Judging from the comments of those who watch him play regularly, the guy is a liability on defense.

Surely, NBA scouts see that. Does anyone think that his offensive skills are so extraordinary so as to compensate for an inability to defend? Is he going to be a first team All American?....second team?....third team?.....doubtful....honorable mention, perhaps.

It's too bad. I surely hope that I'm wrong and that scouts "know" that defense is teachable at their level...and feel that his college coaches just didn't know what buttons to push. In a few months we'll know.

I have to agree. I have commented on his defensive ability (efforts) enough. To switch it up a bit....

Call me crazy, but at this point, I honestly believe that the player that may be getting NBA interest is Josh Benson. He may not be dropping double doubles, but with his limited experience so far in his college career, his skill set is something that shows potential.

His footwork is good, effort, hustle, lateral movement, straightline speed and agility for a big, shooting form, free throws, etc...I think that we are going to be pleasantly surprised with his game at the end of his career here.

Another guy...

...who couldn't defend. In `93-`94 Donyell Marshall was Big East player of the year and I believe first team All American. He was drafted #4 and was the first pick of the Timberwolves.

They got rid of him...their #1 pick,...half way through his first year. I recall the Timberwolves GM Kevin McHale saying that "the Big East player of the year can't play defense. We knew that when we picked him....but thought we could teach him....we were wrong".

Marshall was traded to the Warriors and subsequently played for about ten NBA teams...making a lot of money along the way. He was so good offensively that every team he played for apparently thought he was worth the chance.

Today he is a rich man.....but never met NBA expectations because of his defense. Everyone thought they could "teach" him.

Actually I meant the miracle win against Fordham in 08/09 by a 72-71 score where we were behind to a horrible opponent with only a few seconds left at the Arena.
