A-10 Semis - Duquesne

#1 Seed up next. It will be a battle, but we can win this. Here is some analysis of the two teams:

Dukes had a 6-7 pre-conference record. UD went 6-6 (with our last OOC match next week against Bowling Green). But there is a world of difference between the two schedules. Here is a side-by-side comparison:

Flyers - Dukes (with RPIs if important -- for at large bids you need to be in Top 40)

Cincy - Cincy Both DONE

Wright State - William & Mary Both DONE

Bowling Green - DONE except Dayton match next week - Central Michigan - DONE

Northeastern - semis - need to win conf tourney - U Conn 3 matches left sitting at 13-17 DONE

Western MI - semis - need to win conf tourney - W VA 3 left and they will be DONE

MO State - Conf tourney next week. Sitting @ #3. Will need to win it to get in - Robert Morris - plays Quarters today PROBABLY DONE

Tulsa - semis RPI #39 - could get in even losing conf tourney - IPFW - semis today

WKY - RVotes RPI #52 - needs to win conf to get in - So ILL - 4th in MVC - conference tourney next week

St Marys RVotes - RPI #51 - needs to win conf to get in - VA Tech - 5th in ACC - tough to get in with RPI 48 PROBABLY DONE

Ohio RVotes RPI #37 - Probably gets In - E Michigan - semis today

Iowa State ranked #24 - NCAA-bound - Lipscomb - finals today

North Carolina ranked #14 - NCAA-bound - Xavier - 2nd in Big East Standings - RPI 54 - Need to win conference Tourney to get in.

Nebraska ranked #6 - NCAA-bound - Michigan State Ranked #17 - RPI 26 - NCAA-bound

Dukes played a lot better than UD in conference. They went 12-2. UD is 8-6. But we played half our conference schedule with Alaina out and others injured. Not an excuse, just stating a fact and bringing it into play when we were healthy playing a tougher OOC schedule and winning just as many matches as Duquesne. Both teams have improved a lot over the season when they have all their players available.

Next Comparison - Season stats

Dukes and A-10 don't have conference-only stats which would be more likely "how the teams have played lately" against similar foes. So here are the comparisons I have -- again noting our tougher OOC schedule. Bold Face is UD performing better than Duquense.

Flyers Conference Only - Dukes Total Season - Flyers Total Season

Hitting % .233 - .229 - .206

Opponent H% .149 - .177 - ..170

Assist/S 11.2 - 11.8 - 10.9

SA/S 1.53 - 1.2 - 1.43

RE/S 0.9 - 1.2 - 1.0

Digs/S 13.7 - 14.8 - 14.0

Blocks/S 3.3 - 2.7 - 3.1

Points/S 16.9 - 16.3 - 16.3

Intangibles: We lost in 5 at Pittsburgh in our only meeting this season. We didn't have Alaina and they stacked their defense to take away Shayne on the left and Megan in the middle. Jill is playing way better now than a month ago. Alaina is back which helps everywhere on the court. She is 2nd in digs/set. She serves well. She blocks well - putting up 5 last night. She and Jill in combination create match up nightmares because the setter has to block one of those two for 2 rotations and the other for 1. Jill just had a big match last night. I would expect DUQ to set their right OH (a better blocker) against Jill and their setter against Alaina. Their setter Mary Henry is only blocking 0.53/set for the year. So she gets to stop Alaina and her quickness and power or Jill at 6'4" who now has the down the line and sharp cut shot and is way better taking care of out-of-system shots -- all of which she didn't have earlier in the year. Henry is 5'11" (i.e. that means 5'10"). She will have a lot to handle defensively. However, on the other side of the net, she played well against us offensively last time. She won A-10 SOY, but I don't think she was the best setter in the conference. I though VCU's setter should have won SOY. She did out-played Jenna last time, who I thought had a so-so game and had some set location problems. And we didnt or couldn't get our middles going. It wasn't Jenna's best match. I have seen Jenna play much better and would expect Jenna to play very well today. DUQ dug the heck out of us last time. over 20/set average. We dug well too at over 17/set -- they were just better. One very important stat is we scored more of our own points than they did -- 15/set vs 14.5/set. And during the last 5 matches of the year, (not counting LaSalle) we have ramped that up to 18.26/set. Last night we came in at 17/set. The last DUQ match came down to us making more errors and giving them points off our errors. We have to clean that up on our side of the net today to win. And as always, we have to get our block going early and often.

They had 6 players on the All-Conference teams. UD had 2, yet we took them to 5 sets on their home court with our OH1 out. I'm not saying we should have had more in post-season awards. UD received the awards we earned this year. I am saying, we CAN WIN this match. Ladies just need to bring it from the first serve and don't let up. Both teams are better than they were in October, but I think we didn't play that well and we have gotten "more-better" than the Dukes this last month. I think we take it 3-1, but I'll take a 3-2 win any day.

GO FLYERS!!!

30 minutes to first serve. We need to jump on them early.

Dukes up 10-5. TO UD. Our defense is scrapping, but so is Duquesne's. We've had too many hitting errors early -- like 5-6 already. We've gotten lots of block touches, but no blocks yet. Need to settle in to their offensive rhythm and get the block going.

Dukes take set 1 25-17. UD making too many errors on out side of the net and hitting errors. Zero blocks for UD -- but a ton of block touches. We've got to get our block timing down and start stuffing some balls.

Hitters need to relax and swing hard when it's there. Many balls just out (errors).

We lost both long rallies, but our back row is playing hard. Also noticed three times the blockers reached back for tipped balls and the back row was in place to dig it. Front row needs to believe the back row has it covered and not reach back.

UD led early but Dukes go on run. Up 8-6. TO UD. We are still having problems with Dukes attack vs our block. Need to pick it up. We have 1 block.

Dukes beating us at the net -- we can't stop their hitters and they are getting blocks up against us. Behind 19-13. We've cut it to 2-3 several times. Need to keep fighting.

Dayton rallies back to within 1 but drops the set 20-25 and go into intermission up 2-0. Dayton needs to regroup and make adjustments.

Megan Campbell lead the comeback and played great. We were down by 7 and we set megan on the slide 3 times in a row which she buried all of them. Got us to within 4. Dukes got a side out to go back up 5 and we set megan on the slide again to get it back. Then she served tough and caused an overpass which Jenna drove home bring us to within 3 and a TO by Dukes. Megan then served tough again, causing the pass to go close to the net and Duke's setter into the net. Down 2. Then down 1 with a Loiars kill before Dukes sided out with a point and Megan went to the bench and Dukes rolled.

Gotta get the ball to Megan. Everyone else needs to pick it up. Adjustments at intermission and coming out strong will be key.

We are missing something with their setter -- can't seem to get ahead of the attack and get out block up. But at the same time -- we HAVE TO CAPITALIZE on hitting at her. So look at trying to send our attacks at her when she is in the back row so she has to take the first contact and not get to set. Someone else will have to take the second touch. When she is in the front row -- go after her and hit over her and or tool her hands. She is not a good blocker. Make her work harder by having to block then transition to set.

And set Megan like nobody else is on the court.

After great momentum, we just fell apart, even before the injury. As the announcer said, 'once Duq got the lead, Dayton playing scared"

They had no video and did not speculate. ****, we were playing good too, I think the whole team felt her pain. Important now that she gets well, that is most important.

Not sure if I'm understanding this right…we were up by 5 points and serving when the injury happened in the 4th. And we were at 13 points with 12 left to score to even the match. I disagree we were playing scared. We were fighting against some of the best hitters in the conference that now could hit over a 5'8" player.

What hurt the most was the rotation we were in when Jenna went down. Ally subs in for Jill Loiars and vice versa. She had to STAY IN THAT ROTATION. She could not sub in for Jenna in the back row serving. So Ally had to come in and play front row right away and Duquense set everything on her side and their hitters just hit over her. That's how they caught up and went ahead. We would have done the same thing. Even so, we fought back and made it a battle. If the rotation had been were Ally started out setting from a back row spot for a couple rotations, I think the team would have settled down after disruption and we would have won Set 4 with out lead. May not have won the battle in the end, because Ally would have rotated into the front row, but we would have gone 5 sets and we would have started the 5th set with Ally serving for 3 full rotations in the back, giving us the best chance to get ahead in the 5th.

Where we were in the rotation really hurt us after Jenna went down. Proud of how the team rallied and fought back.

I think the chances of the team completing their two set comeback looked good before the injury as they were clearly outplaying Duquesne.

Beckystxa's comment of the rotation issues are very true. We had a DS substituting into the left front position which hurt the blocking but it also gives you one less hitting weapon. I give Ally a ton of credit for stepping in to play setter with very very little practice during the season.

I personally don't like Jenna's jumping every time she sets the ball but she has improved a lot during the season. I'm impressed with her play because I think this was her first year of playing setter full time. We knew all season that we were an ankle sprain or other injury from a major problem.

We were kickin butt in that 4th set until Jenna went down.
