Trey Landers Antics

I am getting sick and tired of him arguing, disagreeing, throwing his hands up, stop and stare with his mouth open, stomping his feet the other way after every call goes against him or he feels like there should have been a call on the play, and when his teammates make a mistake and go the wrong way and he throws the ball out of bounds or something like that, he does the same thing and shows them up, it was bad last year but each game this year he is getting worse and worse, just play basketball and let the refs do their thing, anyone else see what I'm seeing ?

He's competitive and doesn't want to lose? Come on man... This is even bad for you lol

I'd rather him show emotion than be a stiff out there ha

There's a difference between showing emotion, and complaining/whining after every call or play that doesn't go the way you wanted it to... stop the antics, it doesn't help your team or you in any way imaginable.

It's hard to watch in my opinion...especially when you rewind and slow it down and he did commit said foul that he complained to the ref about. He plays with lots of passion and should continue to do so but he doesn't need to make faces, complain, whine, throw hands in the air, mouth agape, etc. to play with that passion.

Christian Laettner had a very similar demeanor on the court his first three years. Coach K made a 15 minute video all of him making faces, complaining, whining, throwing hands in the air, mouth agape, etc. before his senior season. He saw how foolish he looked doing it and actually was much better about it his senior year.

Lambier, Magic Johnson, Tim Duncan and so many more were aghast when a violation was called on them. They should have had their man cards pulled. Trey was never as demonstrative in previous seasons. He should give it up.

As a fan of the Pistons, I would like to go on record that Bill Lambier conducted himself as a gentleman at all times, except when he didn't

Definitely matured his senior year. He graduated from making faces to stepping on opponents while they are on the ground.

Not to mention when there's a blown assignment on defense by a teammate (i.e, weak side help doesn't arrive in time), Trey makes sure to point it out to God and everybody as a CYA.

This ought to be good and fun to watch.
Yes, Trey is a talker out there. Have you watched HS or even grade school ball? Everyone works the refs... EVERYONE. Sadly, it's a full part of the game today. On par with flopping being a solid defensive strategy. This ain't old school ball any more. And kids pick this up very early.
(granted, it's not really all ... just most. And there is certainly more than 1 on any team...)

Being a Cavs fan, I grew very tired of Lebron's - Whaaaat? look - after every time he was called for a foul or thought he was fouled and it wasn't called. Once in a while it can be effective. Every time? Totally ineffective.

Magic, Duncan, Laettner, etc. had their whiny faces - I agree.

They were flat out stars on their respective teams. I don't believe Trey quite has that standing on the team.

I like his emotion and general work ethic. He needs to never take a three and channel that emotion into his play.

If Trey ever really wants credibility with his antics then he needs to stop shooting 3's. If he does not then what he says goes in one ear and out...It's like the guy that wants to be the captain but hasn't done jack s___t on the field....

Don't get me wrong, Trey brings THE toughness to this team, does all the dirty work and sets the tone but you have to be able to hit wide open shots if you want to be taken seriously otherwise you only fuel the ammunition for the others to point fingers...

The worst was when he wouldn't get back on D because he was standing on the other end of the court complaining.

Trey gets an "F" in theatrics, but....

On the team Trey is 1st in rebounds, tied for 2nd in blocked shots, 3rd in FG%, 3rd in minutes played.

And 2nd in FT% and 3rd in FG%, but pathetic in 3pt% (which doesn't make a lot of sense)

FIRST IN LEADERSHIP !

We are all monday morning quarterbacks. Hopefully Grant is dealing with Landers. Hopefully the coaches can get through to him and he changes his behavior. In Grant and the coaches I trust. We will see in future games.

As far a shooting threes, I cringe every time he gets ready to shoot one, but he should not stop taking good, open threes. He does not have bad form, and has shot better previously. It is in his head right now. He can only shake it by making some shots. Same with Cohill. What if Jordan Davis had just stopped a few games ago?

I agree he should not be passing up wide open three's that come from within the offense... he just needs to practice squaring up and getting his feet set right, and he'd knock em down.

It is amazing how bad our players are when we lose and of course the creator of most complaints is udscott, a true non-UD fan.

I think you get what you get with Landers. He is one of the least talented players on the team but he brings about as much to that floor as any of them. I do wish he would complain less but if we lose that fire by taking that way from him, then I am willing to put up with it.

Lets keep winning and then we get to have breaks from the continued whining of certain contributors.

I don't like Trey Landers.

I love him.

As far as whining with the refs, yes he talks a lot. Talking isn't necessarily whining.

If you watch closely in person (which I have), it's very common for him to get the ref to smile or even laugh.

I think the overwhelming majority of what he's saying is good-natured and actually works in his favor. I've seen more refs put their arm around Trey when talking to him than perhaps any other player I've ever seen.

Don't get me wrong, Trey brings THE toughness to this team, does all the dirty work and sets the tone but you have to be able to hit wide open shots if you want to be taken seriously otherwise you only fuel the ammunition for the others to point fingers...
Trey needs to take 3's but not in crunch time. I just got the feeling that his recent 3 pt attempts are ill-timed. He is wide open when he takes them but could just as well drive to the basket. It's reminiscent of Devin Oliver at his worst. Man did he have bad timing. Interestingly, both of them are among my favorites.

He needs to establish his rhythm and confidence when the game is well in hand.

Did your mom finally come down to the basement with news of a UD loss? Been a tough few weeks for you hasn't it?

I love Trey Landers and what he brings. The end.

Trey is Trey. I sit close enough to hear him on the court. His conversations with players and referees are sometimes pretty funny. Yes...the "I've never committed a foul" look gets old a times. But, the reason that the officials don't say a word about it is because of how he handles himself when the focus isn't on him.

I had to laugh last home game when he went to hand the ball to Ayers on the baseline. Ayers bumped into Trey's new pair of Nike's and Trey busted his chops about scuffing up his new shoes. It was all in good fun.

I have noticed him being more vocal as this season wears on. I love the leadership and him being vocal and passionate. I would tone down the body language as an outside observer doesn't know the difference and doesn't see or hear the rest when watching a game on TV. That "perception is reality" can come into play.

Trey is a guy that will end up in my Flyer top 10 of the last 20 years. I love what he brings to the table in terms of heart and effort each and every night. Having interacted with him off the court, he is polite and the type of player you want representing your program.

As stated above...there is a time and a place...but it can't be aghast one whistle with shoulders shrugged and arms out...and the next a hand raised admitting guilt. The Lebron mentality of players today carries down from the pros to youth leagues. I have to laugh when 10 year old girls complain about rules but can't recite a page from a rule book. Don't diminish the impact of a complaint by complaining frequently...but get your point across when you need to and respectfully...I guarantee you will come out ahead in the eye of public perception and with the officials.

Trey needs to continue to be Trey, but also be aware. Guy is a leader and will continue to be.

Simply put, Trey's mindset is that the b-ball court is basketball showtime, ala Magic Johnson. It's their personal time to shine. There is a lot to like, and a little to tolerate. These kinds of players work the crowd, the refs, the opponent. I still recall vividly last season with Trey lined up on the lane for a free throw to be shot. And he is just mentally flogging this Freshman from the opposition next to him. I thought the kid was going to cry! Reminded me of the Southwest Airlines ad, "Wanna get away?" This kid did not want any part of Trey Landers. And Trey was doing the whole trashing with a big grin, thinking "I own you".

My only real issue with Trey is, his “antics” sometimes cause him to lose focus to the point that his performance suffers. At that point, the antics become counterproductive, such as when he misses 1 of 2 free throws, leaving an open door for the opponent to close a score gap.

Now, if you’re Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, or someone like that, then you can back-up the talk and theatrics with your play. But if you can’t back it up, then you’re simply a distraction, and at that point the question becomes “to whom are you a distraction?” If the other team focuses on you to the point that they lose track of your teammates, then that gives the 4 guys on the floor with you a chance to exploit a distracted opponent. But if your teammates are stuck wondering WTF you’re going to do next, then (again) you’ve become counterproductive. So, the antics need to be a means to a positive end.

I can draw a comparison to when I was in Junior League bowling back in HS. One of my teammates was a freshman, and he often acted with the maturity of a freshman. But he could also roll a ball through his legs, at full speed, and get a strike. The strike helped our team score, and his goofing around distracted our opponents. A win/win. But if that “ball through the legs” shot yielded a gutter ball every other time he threw it, then he wasn’t helping our cause. The same as when Trey trash-talks on his way to the FT line, and then throws-up a brick.

No antics today in Olean. Trey had a very good games and the flyers beat a team that hasn’t lost a conference game at home in almost two years.

Trey sort of reminds me of London Warren when he stood in the other teams circle during a timeout listening to their coach. Coach jestured to the ref … who just shrugged his shoulder....

It wasn't actually a timeout so can't say I blame him on that one.

The difference is, Trey can actually score more than 3 points/game.

Correct that was no timeout, so he can stand anywhere on the court.

This came up in another thread. The issue isn't being passionate. It seems the more he argues, throws his hands up, etc. he just gets off his game. I think he's trying to do too much. He let's it get to him.

Trey's a heck of a player when he's hustling for boards, being scrappy, and driving. We saw a little bit of that in the OT periods today.

I suspect the coach(es) or some player had a discussion with Trey, but he is a smart guy, so he probably had some self-refection on his behavior.

Trey struggles on the offensive end because of his lack of size and shooting ability, so he is pressing this year, and especially the last few games. As they say, Landers needs to play within himself and just do what he does best, and not what he can't do. He will figure it out.

Officials didn't manage that properly. They removed Trey from his spot where he could legally be, only to allow SBU to huddle up during a stoppage at that end of the court. UD wasn't permitted to huddle up with CAG at their end, essentially giving SBU a half asses unofficial timeout when UD wasn't able to.

Trey's problem is more that he's in the wrong spot on the court 1/2 the time. He's planted out there 22 feet away when he should be back cutting or just cutting straight to the ball. There's no sense catching the ball at 22 feet, the defense just says "whew, that was close, I'll catch my breath and reset now." If he cuts through the middle he puts the defense in a bad spot. I can't say if that's AG's fault or Trey's fault.

As for the antics, good natured or not, when it happens 3 or 4 times a game you're just showing up the ref. You're the strongest guy on the team, power your way up and create space -- and quit complaining unless it's really bad.
