Ncaa one round or wnit???

So I'd be interested in reactions to this? Would you rather lose by 20 in the opening round of the NCAA tourney or even if you win that one "get" to play the top seed in the pod on that team's home court OR go to the WNIT and stand a good chance to play six games including home games with the opportunity to win a title. Let's say this is all equal because obviously in many cases going to the NCAA Tourney means having a better overall season than reaching the WNIT but not always.

Me personally, I would rather watch them play more games and get a championship. However, for the program, an NCAA appearance is more important even if you lose by 20.

Always the NCAA, even if we draw UConn.

The goal

In my opinion, the goal should be a program successful enough so you're not an 8 or 9 seeding playing a second game against #1.

A few years ago we demonstrated what is possible. Being really successful in women's BB is easier than in men's because there is so much less competition. Many schools still do not take women's athletics seriously and do not invest to succeed. A school that does has an opportunity to do very well.

Also, good women players typically stay for four years, unlike men who are thinking NBA while still in the 9th grade. And women are more apt to prefer staying closer to home. UD has the potential to be a mid-west power in women's BB. One last point: The ND men usually are pretty good. But the ND women are always very good and among the top five programs. It's easier for a women's program to be consistently successful...if a school regards it highly and invests accordingly. And a good coach is always a big deal.

I bring this up because I don't know if a better seed is possible due to the A-10 limitations unless they play a murderous non conference schedule and win the majority of them. Take out the elite 8 year and it's been one and done whether it be Arkansas, Tennessee, Texas A &M or Marquette.

NCAA will always Trump WNIT. When they talk about a coach they will mention that coach went to back to back NCAAs. If they go to WNIT a year in between two NCAA appearances they say went to NCAA twice out of last 3 years. WNIT don't even get mentioned.

This year's team had potential for a deeper run but I saw in person at the SLU game a team that was spent from having to play with only 7 players for most of the yrar. It caught up with them.

Coaches have said you need have 10 players available for game day and 13 for successful practices.

All in all it is remarkable that Shauna went to two NCAA tournament in her first two years as head coach. This helps with recruiting. She can say we know the way, now we just need to advance and with the right recruits they can help.

UConn has won championships with six. Not easy...no margin for error; but doable. If UConn doesn't win this year it will be because they have six and only six.....that has happened at least once before.

Re practice: Top teams use male practice players and have for years. Does UD? If not they definitely should. I've watched practices with male players...a very useful technique. The women are practicing against players that are bigger, faster, stronger....prepares them well for game situations against tough opponents. Again, do the Flyers use male practice players? If not, why not?

Either that or they all have boyfriends who show up at practicr.

Think on senior day they recognized a couple male practice players.

Big difference between UCONN 6 players and UD 7.

How could you forget TCU and Brittany Wilson in 2010?

True, but,...

The issue with so few players is their vulnerability, no matter how good they are. Over the last decade, or so, UConn has had a very thin bench a few years as well as a deep bench at times. In the former case they have been stung in the Dance by a key injury and/or two quick fouls on a key player.

There is a Dayton connection. Roughly five years ago UConn had six players...no one else. That year a freshman from Dayton was a "big" that was getting serious minutes from the very first game....vital, needed minutes.....a freshman; unheard of at UConn...she was very good. She dropped out of school after one semester...just couldn't deal with the demands of the UConn program....transferred immediately to Kentucky. I think her name may have been Walker....not sure.

By the time of the Final Four UConn was playing five very good players, 40 minutes each....not sustainable....they needed "Walker" and she was gone. ND knocked them off in the semi-final game as I recall. UConn can win it all this year with six...there is no seventh. But they've got to be lucky.

I don't know how good a recruiter Shauna is.....got to be able to attract good players. UD has much going for it....I see no reason why we can't become a top-tier program. Still have not recovered from JJ's abrupt defection.

His departure is a head scratcher for sure. I feel after a season of injuries after the elite 8 run and knowing UCONN was on the schedule the loss of Madiline Blais was the straw that broke the camels back. Self inflicted pressure.

Medical leave would have been appropriate and understandable but stating health reasons and needed time with family just didn't add up when he appears in the Netherlands coaching a month or so after leaving.

In the end I feel we will be the better for it, have good feel about Shauna.
