We Are Simply In a Down Year

I accept it. No rose glasses. I support them. Better years are coming when AG gets HIS recruits IN. For now, it is what it is...17-15 seems likely

Better terminology for me would be rebuilding year. Thread gets a 1 for originality.

If this is a down year, what will next year be with the loss of DD ad the real possibility that Josh uses the graduate transfer rule???

Cunningham seems pretty grounded. 3 schools over the course of a career...hope he isn't one of the 1.9% of graduate transfers.

Real possibility or real risk, but I agree. He might be exhausted by then. And he graduated high school like 20 years ago (exaggeration). He might want to start his post grad activities, i.e. Pro.
And don't rule out Kostas going pro. He is euro mindset. So why not develop his game while earning a paycheck.
Scary, but with that comes more opportunities for coach grant to get his own recruits in here faster .

I haven't given-up on this team improving and making a decent season out of it. You can easily observe some points of improvement already. Saint Mary's will be an uphill fight, but Wagner and most A-10 teams can be beaten. This UD team does have some fight in them, as they could have given-up in several games, but fought back. With our current strength of schedule, it would have only taken the Hofstra game and the Miss. State game, to have this season on a much different projector. We have some guys that can play, when that's true, then there is hope and opportunity. Flyers might still surprise!

I love the Atlantic 10 because I love the Dayton Flyers!

That's just downright scary. But he is our captain, and imagining him as captain for a 3rd straight season is a clearer vision.

An even better vision would be Anthony picking up a grad-fer big to compliment Josh. I think that possibility is the greater of the two. A project won't do it soon enough.

That would be nice but we just don't get big grad-fer's. More likely Josh does that or as said by someone above, he goes about his future away from college.

Rpiforecast is projecting us to go 15-15, 6-6 OOC record, 10-8 A10 record, finishing at #117 in the rpi...#73 sos, #4 ooc sos.

The win-loss record is off by 1 game, 15-15 instead of 16-14, because of the cumulative game-by-game probabilities.

Do you judge a movie before its over?
Do you quit a book before the end?

Flyers are 5-5 playing a tough schedule with numerous injuries, new coach and Young players...R-E-L-A-X.

Yes, I am enjoying watching these young players improve each game. It does require you to ignore all the gloom and doom.

If some people don't remember...

Archie went 17-14 in year 2... Then started out 13-8(1-5) in year 3, before taking off

We will be fine

I don't see all the doom and gloom in posts. Vast majority see this as a rebuilding year and are intent on watching the youngsters improve. Really only a few folks who are down all the time.

I would agree that this is a down year compared we have been accustomed to in recent years. However, this is a down year for the A-10 as a whole. With as young as our team is, I would not rule out the possibility of winning the A-10 tourney with a vastly improved team compared to what we are seeing now.

This is one of those years when you judge the coach by how improved the team is at seasons end. Against better teams, we can't continue playing four guards and a center. We need a healthy Williams and an improving Kostas. Neither, whether thru health or lack of experience, is ready right now. That makes the rotation difficult.

We are scoring points but our zone is weak and our man to man is weaker. We can't stop dribble penetration nor contest threes effectively. If turnovers are lower, we can compete in the A10.

I shudder thinking about playing a team with strong inside players.

I don't think this is all that hard to comprehend why so much disappointment so far. A lot of success the past 4+ years, 4 straight trips to NCAA tournament, co-A10 champs, an Elite 8 run. The idea has been that we've been building AND sustaining success. And then suddenly, new coach, injuries, some recruits decide to go elsewhere, lack of success on the court, and always in the back of our minds how difficult it is to attain and sustain that success. It's not that people don't want AG to succeed. It's that many are afraid of essentially starting over, making it more difficult to recruit, possibly past precedence from AGs Alabama days, and probably most importantly, the basic passage of time for all of us. We only get so many days/months/years on this place, we love the Flyers, and it seems like a loss of precious time to try and just "get back" to what we just had.

In the end, it is what it is. As much as we all love Flyer basketball, it's not the most important thing in the world. We'll all survive if our beloved Flyers falter. But it sure would make life a little sweeter if we didn't have this setback. And while I may be a bit down on the team this year, my cheering for them is no less loud, even if my criticism of them is a little more harsh.

My expectations haven't changed so I'm happy with the season. I think we should be in the NCAA tournament 3 years out of 4, and Sweet 16 or better one out of four. This is our down year, but we're also due for a Sweet 16 next year.

You are about to find out first hand!!! Saint Mary's has four players listed 7'1", 6'11", 6'10" and 6'10".

I would say that it is the way we are cause we have a lot of freshmen playing on the court at the same time. Still in the Georgia St game DD had a few dumb plays and he is a senior. (X-court pass, calling time out on in bounds play)

I discount freshmen mistakes not because they have no impact on the game because they do, however you expect freshmen to make mistakes due to transition between HS and the college game.

As we approach late Jan, mid Feb we should start looking forward to infrequent mistakes by the freshmen.

Scary, but with that comes more opportunities for coach grant to get his own recruits in here faster .

If we lose both Kostas and Cunningham ya'll better get used to the term "building year" because next year will be one too. I personally don't believe either will be going anyway as next year is a perfect setup for both of them to show off their skills on a solid team.

Holy crap! And what if Jordan transfers and Cohill decomits? I'm buying gold and silver right now.

They only use 2 or 3 of them with any regularity, but that is 2 or 3 more than we are equipped to handle. Landale went for 15/14 against us last year - he may hit those numbers by halftime...

To me, it's not about the record. This year was always going to have its challenges. What I want to see is improvement and reason for optimism going into next season.

Archie's 2nd year has been brought up before, but what doesn't get mentioned is that we were 0-7 in games decided by 3 points or less, and 11 pts away from going 24-6 (11-5) entering the A10 tournament. That team was on the cusp of breaking through. With who we were bringing in the following year compared to what we were losing, there was a lot of reasons for optimism.

Through 10 games, I don't have that same feeling. Plenty of season left to change that, but that's the where I stand right now.

Doubt he would even consider it...Right now he's showing what a tremendous blue collar player he is with real limited touches and hardly any help. Next year with another year in the program and, more importantly, both BIGS playing along with Kostas he'll get to really refine his game away from the basket more. After next year it can be a really big $$ year for Josh. Not saying he's guaranteed NBA but a real possibility to play on a top team overseas at worst..

Nobody is happy about a 5-5 record. Players, coaches, admin and fans.

There are realities of what you have on the floor. Each time, UD has changed coaches a dip occurred. JOB, BG and AM had disappointing second years. OP had nowhere to go but up...

Coaches seem to have some talent dips before they leave.

The question is how many years. Little reason for hope next year yet. Losing DD and gang a good fteshmen is not likely a plus. If Cunningham leaves we are Fordham. Unconscionable given our resources

Assuming that Cunningham stays next year, we lose DD, gain Cohill, get back Mikesell and possibly Miller. And while many of the players will have gained a year of experience, outside of JDavis and possibly Crutcher, not sure we have much room for improvement elsewhere. And so while not all doom and gloom, this could easily be a 4+ year process and I guarantee the natives will be restless long before then. I just don't see how quickly things can change if we are dependent on getting AGs recruits in since he needs multiple years to get his guys in AND get them some experience. By the time that happens, we will long be an afterthought and all of our previous success will be long forgotten.

How about giving Obadiah Toppin some credit! He is practicing every day with the team and could become the next Josh Cunningham! Also, I think you are underestimating all our other freshman as well as Landers, Williams and (I can't believe I'm saying this) John Crosby! With Dwayne Cohill and perhaps one or two other good recruits coming next year I don't think it will be a 4+ year process! Just saying! I choose to be optimistic rather than a debbie downer! TXFlyerFan, I'm not saying you are but there are some on here that are!

Honestly, wasn't even thinking about Toppin simply because I have no idea. Even though he will have practiced this year, he'll be a freshman and a year from playing competitive basketball. Hopefully he will contribute but like all freshman, even red shirt/academic, still a freshman. And, not saying they won't improve at all. Every year, you expect players to improve. I'm really speaking more to the statement that AG needs his own players to really succeed and if that is true, it will likely take 4+ years to really judge, if that's the bar that's being set.

So is Kostas, but with more size and athleticism. More fouls than baskets so far. Hope Toppin is better.

A better than 100% shooting percentage? That's pretty impressive.
