A pay wall may keep you from opening this story in the NY Times about Dayton native Mike Schmidt, 'greatest draft pick ever.' I bring it up because the Flyers' final game of '70 on Founders Field was against Ohio University, coached by legendary Bob Wren . . . and Schmidt from Fairview High School, who was a star for the Bobcats. There were a bunch of scouts behind the backstop . . . I'm pretty chatty and asked who they were on campus to see. One scout said he was looking at OU's catcher, Steve Swisher. Didn't mention Mike. We had a pretty decent pitcher that year, can't recall his name . . . believe the unnamed guy started, but didn't finish. We were on the short end of a 17-0 final if memory serves. Somebody from OU, may have been Schmidt, put one over the snow fence in center that almost cleared the railroad tracks . . . older alums will remember the rail tracks.
