Like many Flyer fans, my emotions on this squad has been taken on a roller coaster ride. Part of it is the natural ebb & flow of a season, but a large chunk of it is based upon the far too often repeated pattern of solid OOC performance, .500ish conference performance and an NIT bid. Just as things start to look up again, who comes to the Arena but the serial heart ripper Rhody Rams. Is there a school that has ripped the hearts out of more Dayton squads than the Rams? Honestly, I thought they did just that in the first matchup, UD looked disinterested and listless for most of the game as Rhody beat them like a drum. Did they get the wake up call when down 15 to Saint Joe's at home? So far, it appears that way as the team has been playing tougher defense, sharing the ball more, relying on their teammates more instead of forcing things individually as much.
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that if UD is to have any shot of an at large bid, this is a close to a must win game as you get at this point of the season. Each of the last 3 vicitories has provided a little healing, and each one has been a little more impressive than the 1 prior. GW was w/o a bunch of their scoring, GMU was winnless in conference play, but had kept everything close and UD was up nearly 20 in the closing minutes, SBU was one the road in a place that is always tough to play during their homecoming. From a national stage, this one probably takes a step back from the SBU game, its at home against a team that will finish in the lower half of the conference. However from a personal standpoint, I'm conditioned to accept UD losses to Rhody, usually in the most obscene manner possible (ie Dustin Hellenga hitting a fade away three while practically sitting on the bench)
If they win this game, they get a week to prepare for LaSalle. Despite the loss of their best player, they still returned the rest of their starting lineup from last season's sweet 16 (?) squad. I'm sure that squad is as fustrated as UD has been at points this season, they took SLU to the wire. Get further healed vs Rhody and they get a full week to set themselves up for the stretch run. They get to keep those NCAA dreams alive, they get to feel some redemption for an early loss on the road; they get to erase some question marks.
Lose, and well they're right back to were they've been oh so many times. History tells me the Flyers lose this one at the buzzer. Prove me wrong, erase my doubts, keep on rolling.

I hear you, Medford, but I'm starting to get a feeling about this group. It's like the 15-point deficit against St. Joe's was their wakeup call, b/c ever since that point in that game, they've been more focused, more determined, and more team-oriented.
They're playing their best ball since destroying Murray State & Winthrop at home and beating a pretty good Ole Miss team down south. The seniors are playing more like seniors, everyone is sharing the ball better on offense, and while the defense isn't to the level of Gregory's best squads, it's as good as it has ever been in the Miller era.
I give Hurley credit for his rebuilding job so far at RI, but I think these Flyers are now on a mission. The mission continues Wednesday, with a redemptive win against a long-time nemesis.
LET'S GO, FLYERS!!!!

Errant pass for a three point play attempt. That was very ugly offense there.

Low basketball IQ all around on that last play--lazy, telegraphed pass; stupid foul.

Terrible defense again and again. We let their big guys post up three feet from the basket and get the pass... layup, layup, layup

Rhode's only play is spread the offense and dribble penetrate. As long as Archie is in a man -to-man defense, we will continue to get scorched.

Pierre with a 35 foot jump shot at the first half buzzer! Wow! Archie made a slick move by subbing him for Kyle Davis. That was a very impressive shot at the end of the half.

The FT situation is different than in Rhode Island, with the Rams only taking 6 but we had 13. Got to think that we can improve our shooting percentage in the second half, but agree with Jack that our defense isn't there.
Just want to win this.

Makes sense to me
URI spreads the floor
we go out on 'em
chase 'em around
they penetrate and score.
Whatever we do let's don't play any zone

Did they call a foul on Price on that last play or was it just a time out? These crazy announcers didn't say. They spend way too much time talking personalities as opposed to what's going on around the court.

great that we're up by 11, but the flyers will struggle to get to 8-8 if they refuse to play d. ri is a bad offensive team.

We tightened up the inside, now Matthews is scorching our guards. Time to bring in Kyle Davis.

I will say it again...when you have guards that you can't defend, you must play a zone or they are just going to drive to the bucket every time they get the ball...every time.

down to 6. at home, we're being outrebounded and outshot by 10% by a bad team. same thing both halves...get out to 8 and stop playing aggressive. ri has come back in each half. it's not a good sign about this flyer team.

Catch and dribble for 65 feet and no one could stop him. Matthews is going to be crushing us for three more years.

Khari really came through at the end with his free throws. We need to find an answer to these quick guards and dribble penetrations. Had Matthews started to control the ball in the first half with his drives, the game could have had a different outcome.

but for dp's 35 foot prayer, the flyers manage only a 2 point advantage in both halves. you don't give back w's, but it's hard to predict that they'll get the number of w's they'll need to dance...or make the nit.
