Smith out at Minnesota
Tubby Smith is out at Minnesota. For which I give Minnesota the Bob Knight response to Don Donoher's ousting..."Who does Minnesota think they are anyway".
Brian Gregory will be on his way to Minnesota soon...haha, but I wouldn't be shocked. How silly of me.

Don't rule out BG for Northwestern either.

Craig Robinson probably would like the Northwestern job too. The wolves are probably howling at him at Oregon St.
The AD there is caught between a rock and a hard place. If I fire him for the good of the basketball team, do I risk the wrath of an IRS audit ?

Dumb move on their part. Minny was underseeded this year and still got out of the first round. There's a good chance that it will be years before they make it to the Round of 32 again.

I don't much know about the history of the Minnesota basketball program, but this seems like a bad move to fire Tubby. He was 3/6 making the NCAA tournament at Minnesota, that's not bad. I would take him as UD's head coach.
Minnesota Golden Gophers (Big Ten Conference) (2007–2013)
2007–2008 Minnesota 20–14 8–10 6th NIT 1st Round
2008–2009 Minnesota 22–11 9–9 T–7th NCAA 1st Round
2009–2010 Minnesota 21–14 9–9 6th NCAA 1st Round
2010–2011 Minnesota 17–14 6–12 9th
2011–2012 Minnesota 23–15 6–12 T–9th NIT Runner-up
2012–2013 Minnesota 21–13 8–10 T–7th NCAA 3rd Round
Minnesota: 124–81 (.605) 46–62 (.426)
Minnesota NCAA Tournament appearances
1972, 1982, 1989, 1990, 1994*, 1995*, 1997*, 1999*, 2005, 2009, 2010, 2013

I'm from Minnesota and don't understand it. They must think they can get Shaka or Howland. The Gophers will never amount to anything in football or basketball. The weather is too cold for most recruits. But I will say that Williams Arena is the best place I've ever watched a basketball game -- and that includes UD Arena. What an atmosphere. The seats are right down on the court and the court itself is elevated, which makes the game appear more like a play on a stage.

I lived in Mpls and went to a few games at Williams during the Clem Haskins days. In particular when they played #1 Illinois (Kendall Gill's team) and that place rocked.
A buddy of mine told me that the new AD and UM came from VCU. Maybe they do think they have a shot at Smart. I have to believe you only fire Tubby if you have a solid plan for replacing him. I personally like Tubby, think he is a good coach and seems like a good person.

The coaching carousel is officially underway. One upside to this year's off season is we don't have to worry where Archie will coach next year.

I am not too concerned about AM moving on to openings like this for this year. I am worried about next year at this time when we will start to sweat out if AM will take high profile openings.

Must be the first time in an NCAA Tournament game that the losing coach got fired first, and 2 days later the WINNING coach got fired too!!

Wake Forest did it to Dino Guidio, the ex- Xavier assistant a few years back.
I have been pushing for some changes with the UD program, but I do not support a fire and pillage approach. That is totally ridiculous what Minnesota did.
If I was a decent coach, no way would I show any interest in the Minnesota job, because the noose is waiting around the corner for me.

Yet, but Tubby lost his last game, too, and I got to see both in person.
I was impressed with the number of Minnesota fans who were at the games. There were a bunch around me, and I think I saw more Minnesota shirts than any school. Oddly enough, I also saw a bunch of Ohio State and several Cincinnati Reds shirts and hats.

OT, but I see that Butler assistant coach Matthew Graves got the head coaching job at South Alabama. I remember that he was one of the candidates for the UD job after BG left.

Tubby has a national championship. How many coaches would love to have that accomplishment? I don't understand that move either. Minnesota will never be a top basketball program in the Big Ten.

When it comes to understanding the history of Minnesota basketball, take note of the asterisks. Prior to Tubby, when they weren't cheating, they were bad.
This is a stupid move.

And I thought I read that Minnesota promised Tubby a new practice facility and a bigger recruiting budget when he was hired, but they never delivered on those promises. Another strike against Minnesota IMO.

I guess I'm mistaken about a bigger recruiting budget for Tubby, but Minnesota definitely promised Tubby that they would build a new practice facility for him and also update the arena, and they never did either of those two things.
Minnesota also didn't tell Smith of his firing until after the information had already leaked. That isn't a very professional way to handle the situation.
http://www.nwitimes.com/sports/colle...b182d5706.html
From nwi.com:
Word of Smith's firing leaked Monday morning, but the coach didn't find out about the decision personally until meeting with Teague in the afternoon. That didn't sit well with Smith's agent, Ricky Lefft.
"Coach, certainly with all that he's contributed to the program and the university and to the city, I think was deserving of better," Lefft said. "It's definitely, definitely, definitely disappointing."
When Smith left Kentucky, he was promised by the previous Minnesota administration a new practice facility and improvements to historic, but outdated, Williams Arena. Those improvements never came, but Smith remained hopeful.
