Projected Starting Lineup for Akron (based off their opening night lineup)
G 12 Darryl Roberts 6’0” 165 SR Toledo, Ohio
G 4 Steve McNees 6’2” 170 SR New Castle, Pennsylvania
F 5 Brett McClanahan 6’4” 185 JR Nitro, West Virginia
F 13 Nikola Cvetinovic 6’8” 230 JR Loznica, Serbia
C 44 Zeke Marshall 7’0” 218 SO McKeesport, Pennsylvania
Keep an eye out for PG Alex Abreu who comes off the bench (very good player freshman from puerto rico) and Brett McKnight (who only played 13 minutes in their opening night blow out due to rarely practicing (suspension))
This will be one heck of a challenge!

Zeke Marshall was a big time recruit. He will be a load. If we do not show up, this will not be pretty. Akron is always at the top of the MAC.

Here is the link to the Fox Sports Ohio Broadcast that will streamed. So if the Xavier game is running long you should be able to watch the start of the UD game there.

This will be a good test for our bigs to see if they can deal with a strong center. Maybe kav will see more minutes to help provide some muscle on the defensive end. All in all should be a great game.
Go flyers!!!

Very happy that this game is in The Arena. The Zips are always tough so better to be playing them on our floor, especially this early in the season.
The Flyers should take care of business....

I'm starting to really like how Spearman plays basketball end to end....and I notice the student section still likes to cheer the USA chant for out of country players.

Hard to believe that Dakota Euton was an early commit to UK under Billy Gillespie and he's the 5th guy off the bench for the Zips.

In the JS iso, I think the Flyers have found the end of half/end of the game play that they have been lacking since Brian Roberts graduated.

good first half, staten reminds me of Brob with his driving floaters in the lane, I guess this season we see what would happened if Brob would have had a supporting cast his senior season

Juwan is quick quick quick. For the most part making all the right decisions. Couple of bad ones as well.
JP is going to be a fan favorite when he's hot and a fan scapegoat when he's not. He's got to figure out when those quick three's are no good ... particularly when he's not squared up.
I like Spearman's spunk. Big men playing decent on the boards and also looking like they will generate some O this year as well.
We've got good depth on this team and will get contributions from the bench consistently this year.
Our weakside rotation is slooooooooooooow. We've got to do better on screens as well. Defense needs to tighten up a bunch.

I am loving the point guard play so far. Staten is a total playmaker and Parker is fearless from downtown.

Part of the problem is our bigs show really hard on every ball screen even 25-30 feet from the basket. It's just unnecessary that far out and right before the half was a perfect example when they got a wide open 3.

Great half and CJ did not take a shot. Good half by Benson. We shot over 50% and great rebounding. Defense was so-so.

The scoreboard looks good, but Akron had way too many wide open 3s. Good thing they didn't hit too many of them.

Most teams don't miss when you double down and leave too much room b/w yourself and the defender on the weakside.

was wondering this after last game, but there is something like the junior drop off. with all the new players and mix, could be an unJohnson like year for Cj. Esp. with all these expectations on him.

I've heard of a "sophomore slump", but never a "junior drop-off"

This type of game will pay dividends later in the year. Akron is a good ooc matchup.
The real Paul Williams just entered the building !!

Interesting to see that BG goes to Parker during this run
A couple huge plays with the Searcy follow and PW steal and then pull up

I don't know how the rest of the MAC is supposed to be, but I can't imagine this team not being there in the end

Anyone else think we really got the benefit of the doubt from the officials in the last minute? No doubt Searcy's basket should have been waived off. He was definitely over the back.
A win is a win though and I'll take it.

what could have been.....what could have been....
Devin Searcy suppressed on the bench behind Huelsman for three years.
Two double-doubles in first two games as a starter. Does anyone know how many double-doubles Huelsman had in four years?

That will be there for Juwan all year. We have three finishers around the bucket, they just have to be ready for the pass or the rebound and put back.
We've got a long way to go on defense.
I really like the new guys.
I think we need Juwan in the game late on point. Pretty obvious difference in the handle and confidence to make the play.

Gotta trust the bigs to play defense and stop the double down nonsense ... or if you're going to double down be decisive. The half commitment help nearly killed us tonight. They were just spotting up and dropping those shots with ease. Man to man and let them try and beat us down low.

So I guess Searcy just doesn't have all the intangibles, but at least he can score and rebound. If only BG would have let the Big Dog eat before this year.

There's quite a bit of difference watching Searcy play this year vs the previous 3 years. His shooting alone has significantly improved from under 40% his freshman year to around 50% his soph year to 58% as a junior - he's shooting around 80% this year
You must have some serious man love for the UD point guards the past couple of years if you think Kurt's play was the reason we weren't more successful

Some people just can't move on. They need to rehash the same bs year in and year out. It gets real tired.
Anyway, tough game tonight. Those guys can shoot. The sr's stepped up and won the game for us in the crunch. Our defense leaves a lot to be desired. This team has a lot to work on, but I'll take this win any day of the week.

See the quote below by Devin about Kurt. Kurt was the anchor of a class that accomplished more than any other at UD in the last 25 or more years. Let's celebrate that while we celebrate what Devin can do for us now.
“I talked to him today and earlier this week just to let him know how much I missed him” Searcy said. “I’ll always remember how hard of a worker he was — how he did it just to make the team better — and how he didn’t expect anything in return.”

we used to win many many games with Keith and gang outrebounding other teams about 6 or 7 years ago, outrebounding teams by 7 boards and grabbing 38-40 boards consistently.
we had 54 the first game, haven't seen total tonight. defense needs work but we are boarding so i'm not hugely concerned.

Every time I've seen Akron, not just versus us, I come away impressed with how Dambrot gets them to play. I think some BCS or high major school just might take a chance on him one of these days.

Funny that we were worried about post defense this year. We gave up all of 8 two point baskets tonight. Granted part of that was our paranoia of giving up the easy basket and doubling down, but an adjustment could me made during the game.
The biggest problem with the defense is our stubbornness of bringing the big man out to hedge a ball screen 30 feet from the basket. It never forces a turnover and almost always gives up an open look because the floor is so opened up. Just let them set their little screen out there and go around it to the basket side and problem solved.
