Most men cancel a scheduled visit because they have made up their mind to go elsewhere. That doesn't seem to be the case with Morsell as of today. He hasn't announced and it might have meant he had paired it down to two. But he announced when he got it down to three. In this case he went out of his way to say Dayton was still in his top three. Don't know why he cancelled the visit, but if Archie says he is still wanting to visit, I have to think we are still in the running.

Haven't seen any comment from Archie, but I read a Maryland article earlier this week that said Darryl might visit Dayton mid-November for a game or when he had a break. (The only mid-November Sat game is St. Mary's) Cited schoolwork and bb as reasons for cancelling today's visit. I believe Maryland's open scrimmage is today and I am assuming he is attending. I am not optimistic about our chances, but he does continue to state that Dayton is still "in it" when asked if it's down to ND or MD.

If UD is truly still in it with DM I'm actually happy he chose to not come for the red/blue game. If he does visit UD for the St. Mary's game it will be a much better environment than he would have seen today.

Musical chairs...
The downside of him waiting is that it sort of freezes AM's pursuit of other players playing the same position as Morsell.
The upside of him waiting is that ND and/or Maryland may have other players they are going after that may take his offer at those schools.
Let's be honest with ourselves. A Big Ten school and an ACC school--neither of which are middling schools in their respective conferences--probably have better alternatives for this spot than we do.
I think AM is more willing to wait whereas the other two coaches may not. Ergo, the later Morsell waits, the better the chance he goes to UD.

After drinking Brob2Perryman3's 30 year Kool-aide, I am convinced that Morsell and Archie put off the official visit until the Austin Peay game on November 11, which is during the early signing period. Co-incidence or not?
Good Job Archie!

I have felt all along that we still had a chance. He never took us off the list and we wasn't going to decide until later. Another visit might have been in the works long before he cancelled. Needs to be there for St. Mary's.

Sounds like Travis Ford played the "hiring the family friend/mentor" route in order to nab this guy.

I believe Crews was in pretty good on that kid, there were some thoughts on the A10 board that SLU might be willing to keep Crews around if he could nab that recruit. Perhaps the hiring of a family friend was mean to keep the good will in place. At any rate, SLU has been an option for him for several years. Good for them, good for the A10

On June 5, 2015, Rashid Gaston visited Dayton. A week later, he visited Xavier. He committrd to Xavier. Today on the 144 College Sports Madness list, Xavier is ranked 11th with Mr. Gaston marked as Xavier's starting center At 6'9" 240. What could have been? The fish that got away. We could of had both Cunningham and Gaston.

Ok, folks since none of you picked up on this nickname, I can not resist "clearing the air". (Pun intended). I am offering this factoid with no disrespect. Here i offer a definition of the nickname "Bino". I am not making this up. You can look this definition up in the urban dictionary. Bino is a slang term for "BONG". This is the guy who recruited Daryl Morsell for Maryland.

I don't recognize the name morsell, was that someone we were interested in?
Does anyone expect a late signee or are we only looking at a potential transfer? I am happy with this class, really like all three players a lot. When you add kostas this is a class capable of achieving great things.

Yep, i see on 247sports that he has committed to Maryland.
So, who is next man up? Are we still interested in Isaac Kante? I believe that we (University of Dayton) have two scholarships open for 2017. I believe there is one scholarship unused for this year (2016)?

McKinley Wright had 27 in the first game for Champlin Park MN, a 113-71 win. He is called the best rebounding guard in the state. His team is ranked #1 in the big class in the Metro area.

Jordan Davis' team, Dutch Fork, is 3-0. He scored 20 one game. I cannot find scoring on the other two.
The football team is ranked #24 in USAToday and plays in state finals this week.

Nahziah Carter team, Bishop Kearney from Rochester, NY, has started out 2-0. On Sat. 12/3 they defeated Niagara Falls Cheektowaga 67-59 as Nahziah scored 23 pts. The article I read said that he had an alley-oop dunk to end the first quarter and a couple other ones late in the game!
On 12/6 they won 79-53 over Nottingham and Carter tallied 23 pts again.
Next game is Fri. 12/9 at home against International Prep. I will post results if they are available.
Game from 12/9 was cancelled!

Dutch Fork was defeated by Keenan High from Columbia, SC on Thurs. 12/8 63-56. There was no box score! The Silver Foxes are now 3-1 and maybe we can catch up with how Jordan Davis is doing at a later date.
Dutch Forks next game is Sat. 12/10 against 22 Feet Academy in the Bojangles Bash that has several top high school teams playing.

Obviously he is confident in his 3pt shot.
He also hits the O-boards pretty hard and may even have kept after a few of his own misses until he got it in. Seems like an aggressive center persona on the court. That would be a welcome change.

Not really. Tate played three years at Missouri and was on Missouri's staff the last year.....after having been on the sidelines at Mineral Area College for like a decade or something, with a bunch of success.
Hiring Tate maybe gave SLU the inside track on this guy, but it wasn't like he said "Hey, I will hire your Dad or mentor to the staff if you come here." Tate is plenty qualified.

Jordan Davis' team, Dutch Fork, is now 3-2 after being defeated by 22 Feet Academy Saturday by a score of 81-62 at the Bojangles Bash in Columbia, SC.
22 Feet Academy is now 12-2 and played in Kettering at Trent Arena last Martin Luther King Weekend at the Flyin to the Hoop!
Jordan Davis led his team with 22 pts. on 8 for 18 shooting, 5 of 10 from 3 pt. range and 1 for 2 on free throws!

In a close game last night Champlin Park, behind 18 first half points from McKinley Wright, jumped out to an early 24-9 lead and ran their record to 2-0 for the season by defeating Apple Valley by the score of 91-84. The UD pt. guard recruit finished with 27 points in the 8:30 late game of the Breakdown Tip Off Classic.
Theo John, who verbaled to Marquette the same day that Wright verbaled to UD in a news conference held at Champlin Park's gym a while back had 20 points with a big second half!

Three results from Tuesday, 12/13 are as follows (as Jack 72 already posted Jordan Pierce Union Catholic Vikings do not play their first game till 12/18):
Nahziah Carter's team, Bishop Kearney, had an away game and suffered their first loss of the season 78-70 to Bishop Timon-St. Jude. Nahziah led his team with 23 pts. and is averaging 23 for the 2-1 Kings. Next game is Sat. 12/17
Jordan Davis team, Dutch Fork, still smarting from Saturdays Bojangles Bash result (an 81-62 loss to national power twenty-two feet academy) also had an away game and took out their frustration by defeating River Bluff 63-43 running their record to 4-2. Davis was the leading scorer for the Silver Foxes with 23 points. Next game is Thursday, 12/15.
McKinley Wright led 5 players in double figures with 17 pts. as the Champlin Park Rebels ran their record to 3-0 by winning a home game over Centennial 82-39. Wright is averaging 23.7 for the season. Next game is Friday, 12/16.

Dutch Fork lost a game 52-39 on their home court yesterday as Westwood avenged an earlier defeat on their own court from 11/29. Jordan Davis had 6 pts. His teammate, senior pt. guard, 5'10" 140 lb, Jaylen Glover, was high point man with 14 pts. I only saw a box score and not a recap but my guess is that Westwood either played a tight zone or some kind of box and one to slow Davis down. Maybe he just had an off game! Either way, we should not be concerned because, with his height and athleticism, he will probably be in the mix with Darrell Davis to start at SG replacing Charles Cooke next season.
Dutch Fork is off till next Tuesday when they play Richland Northeast, the host team, in the Chick-fil-A classic Carolina Challenge Showcase in Columbia, SC which runs from 12/20 to 12/23. Three top 25 teams in the nation are included in the field including at least two who played at Trent Arena in Kettering last January at the Flyin to the Hoop classic. LaLumiere from LaPorte, Ind, Wheeler from Marietta, Ga, and Greensboro Day from Greensboro, NC.

Champlin Park, the #1 team in the state of Minnesota in class 4A, ran its record to 4-0 last night defeating 0-4 Anoka in a physical game in which the Rebels pulled away in the second half and cruised to an 80-60 win. McKinley Wright was his teams third leading scorer with 15 pts. as two of his teammates went for 20 and 17.
Wright played an outstanding floor game and is averaging 21.5 ppg.
Next game is Tuesday, 12/20 at Eden Prairie.

SMU's Harry Froling to visit UD Jan 5, per several tweets just now. 6'11" Aussie Center. 4-star guy, several good offers (such as Arizona) out of HS. Would be eligible 2nd semester next year if he enrolled early enough for our 2nd semester this year.

Apparently, Archie is using his skill in player development as a major recruiting tool. He is finding players who feel like they need top notch player development to get to the next level.
Look at the progress of recent recruits.
- Charles Cooke. Wanted to improve his game. Need to improve his shot and...
- Big Steve. Needed help with academics, but weight and post skill as well
- Kostas. Has incredible athletic genes in his family, but needs weight and skill development
- Jordan Pierce. Archie said last night needs to develop more of a college body, which means turn more of his weight into muscle
- Carter is only 16 years old. He will need some development
You can say all players need development, some are more ready for college and beyond than others. Archie's sweet spot seems to be the players overlooked by some majors because they lack some of those skills. The majors don't want to take time to develop them. Archie is willing to do so.
It also appears that Archie does want to have height in his line up. Next year's team will be taller than this year's team.

Dutch Fork went 2-0 (62-48 and 62-54) at the Chick-Fil-A Classic in Columbia on Tuesday and Wednesday. Jordan Davis led Dutch Fork in scoring AND rebounding both games. As a reminder, he is listed at 6'-4" and plays primarily 2G.
Game 1:
24pt, 7 reb
9-13 fg, 1-2 3pt, 5-5ft
(but didn't start this game??)
Game 2:
19pts, 10 reb
7-20 fg, 2-7 3pt, 3-8ft

Nahziah Carter's team, Bishop Kearney, from Rochester New York has had 3 wins in a row to run their record to 5-1. The latest was a 93-58 pasting of St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute this past Thursday, 12/22. Nahziah had 25 points and 7 assists to lead his team. Couldn't find box scores on the prior 2 games but Carter is averaging well over 20ppg.

Jordan Pierce team, Union Catholic Vikings, from Scotch Plains, New Jersey, finally played their first game on Sunday, 12/18 and defeated Huntington, from Princeton, NJ 48-47. Pierce had 16 pts and 10 rebounds.
On Thursday, 12/22 Union Catholic ran their record to 2-0 by defeating Red Bank Regional 54-34. Kyle Lofton led the Vikings in scoring with 15 pts and Jordan Pierce added 11 pts. for an avg. of 13.5ppg after the 2 games. I am sure the big mans average will increase as the season progresses.
Next game is Sunday, 1/1/17 against Mater Dei.

Wright has a couple of double/doubles this year. His second stat has been rebounds.
Not saying he gets 10+ rebounds for us, but I love the mentality of any PG getting 10+ rebounds.
I live in the area, but have not had the chance to see him live yet. Hope to do that soon.

I don't know if there's a better quality video out there - I'm too lazy to look - but watching that dunk is always fun. Johnson just immediately starts running toward the hoop and simply beats everyone to the spot.
I miss that athleticism.

In the Farm Bureau Classic at Dorman, SC Jordan Davis team, the Dutch Fork Silver Foxes won two games in the losers bracket after their narrow loss to Spartanburg 49-47 on 12/28.
On Thursday, 12/29 they defeated Shiloh, Georgia 52-50 as Jordan Davis had 23 pts. and then on Fri. 12/30 they defeated Landstown, Virginia 64-59. No box score was available but I will post Jordan's stats if and when I find them. Jordan Davis name was not listed in the box score. My guess he was unavailable to play. I hope he did not suffer an injury in the prior nights game against Shiloh.
Dutch Fork's record is presently 8-4 and their next game is Tues. 1/3/17 at home against Blythewood.

Champlin Park ran their record to 6-0 on Thursday, 12/29 by soundly defeating Woodbury 101-70 in the Granite City Classic in St. Cloud, MN. McKinley Wright led four players in double figures with 34 pts. Theo John, their big man who verbaled to Marquette the same day McKinley verbaled to UD added 16 pts.
They had another game on Fri. 12/30 against Madison East, Wisconsin in the same tourney but no box score yet! I will post later.
Next game is Friday, 1/6/17 at home against Coon Rapids.
My friends, I don't think we will be hurting at point guard next season! McKinley Wright is the real deal averaging 23.7 pts through 6 games.

Wright had one like that his senior year at the Jordan Classic, but I think he caught the ball at his knees mid-air and slammed it home. He was one of a kind.

After starting the season with two straight wins, Jordan Pierce's team, Union Catholic Vikings from Scotch Plains, NJ have lost four in a row and are 2-4 on the season. The 6'10" big man went for 9 pts, 13pts, 11pts and 11pts in the four games and is averaging 11.7ppg for the season.
Next game is Fri, 1/6 at Westfield.

Jordan Davis led his team once again by scoring 20 pts Tuesday evening, 1/3, in a 51-47 home win over Blythewood. The Dutch Fork Silver Foxes from Irmo, SC are presently 9-4.
Next game is Friday, 1/6, at home against Lexington.
No matter whether its a low scoring game or a high scoring game he always seems to come up with at least 20 pts and 10 rebounds.
He will get plenty of playing time at shooting guard next season replacing Charles Cooke as he can put it on the floor and drive to the basket or shoot the 3 ball.

Nahziah is averaging 21.2ppg this season! Next game is Mon. 1/9 at Fairport.

Friday night 1/6 results are as follows: Dutch Fork from Irmo, SC is now 10-4 after defeating Lexington 69-58. Jaylen Glover, a 5'10" PG led in the scoring with 17pts making 4 of 6 on 3 pointers. Jordan Davis added 16pts.
Next game is Tues 1/10 against White Knoll.
Jordan Pierce team, Union Catholic Vikings, won in overtime 60-57 over Westfield going over .500 for the first time this season at 3-2. Jordan Pierce led all scorers with 19pts. Sounds like the big man is getting better with each and every game and is the one becoming a legend because the pictures posted on 12/20 were from him tearing the rim off the bankboard and not the other Jordan (Davis). Although both Jordan's are prolific dunkers! Pierce is averaging 13.6ppg after 5 games. Next game is Sunday 1/8 vs. Seton Hall Prep.
Champlin Park played Coon Rapids last evening but no results in for McKinley Wright's team.

Found a box score for the game: McKinley Wright led 5 players in double figures with 16 pts as Champlin Park led 50-18 at halftime. The reserves probably played a lot of the minutes in the second half! The Rebels are now 8-0 and are rolling over opponents by an average of 20 points! Wright is still averaging 22.4ppg.
Next game is at Andover on Tues. 1/10

Only one game last night as Bishop Kearney lost an away game at 9-1 Fairport 74-58. Fairport got off to a quick start and led 23-10 after the first quarter. Nahziah Carter led his team in scoring with 19pts. Bishop Kearney's record is now 7-3 with another away game at Edison Tech coming up on Wed. 1/11.
Nahziah Carter has tallied 210pts in the 10 games for a 21pt avg.

Every year we have multiple players nominated and that goes back many years. Guys like Ralph Hill and several other busts were nominated. So while it's nice, I wouldn't put much stock in it.

I agree! One thing about Arch is that he knows how to recognize talent and more importantly sees how new players will blend in to the true team concept that has been so successful! While I would be surprised if the four recruits coming in next season turn out to be as successful as the present Fab Three SS,KD,KP plus CC with at least 3, if not 4, NCAA appearances and the most total wins in four years I wouldn't doubt one thing if Archie is still coaching at UD four years from now!
With the continued improvement of the underclassman and Josh and Kostas contributing next season I see no reason why the Flyers can't re-load instead of re-build especially if Kostas turns out to be as good as older brother, the Greek freak, Gianis or even a Danny Manning type. I always thought he could run like a deer!

I don't see the that news any different than the "star" system. I'm not blinded by a 4 star recruit, but wouldn't you rather have that than 3?

I would! Archie already has a 4 star target for 2018. Antwann Jones Jr. a 6'5" SG from Oak Ridge high school in Tampa, Fl. He is a great one that has 12 colleges after him but none seem to be Power 5! YET! Check out his You Tube Sauce video!

Two results from last evening but a third is not in yet! Jordan Davis team, Dutch Fork, defeated White Knoll 63-36. Jordan led his team with 17pts but his minutes were limited in the blowout.
McKinley Wright had a big night leading four Champlin Park teammates in double figures with 28pts. They defeated Andover in an away game 87-62. Their record is now 9-0 and McKinley raised his average to 23ppg.
Jordan Pierce team, Union Catholic, played at St Elizabeth.

Absolutely. I do seem to recall less informed fans (not you) in years past thinking the McDonald's nomination was unprecedented so just wanted to put it out there, that it's an honor that a ton of former flyers have reached. But to your point, yes -- more stars and more accolades is always nice. Do not disagree at all.
While we should trust in Archie's evaluation, Dayton is definitely getting much higher regarded talent than we were pulling in a decade ago. Archie > BG in terms of evaluation and coaching, but it's not like we've moved from 4 star to 3 star territory. We're still pulling mostly 3 star guys as we were with BG. Just getting the right 3 star guys now. But back in the Purnell days, we'd always sign at least one well off the radar guy no one had even thought to evaluate...
So that's why you might recall a few eyebrows were raised when Dayton signed Ryan Mikesell. A bit of an anomaly for Miller as most scouting services didn't rank him, but look at him now he could be the best in his class. Wouldn't be the first time of course that the most under-evaluated player in a recruiting class turned out to be the best. Off the top of my head: Pierre, Devin Oliver, Brian Roberts, Waleskowski, Charles Little, Monty Scott all fit that description.

I pay very little attention to recruiting and often don't even click on this thread because things like "stars" are basically worthless to me. But it's a slow day at work! Interesting that Mikesell was rated so low. He's really a do it all guy. Playing out of position he's leading the team in rebounding. Last year as a freshman he played more of a guard-like role. I guess if you don't have an identified skill that is 9 out of 10 you get no love. But if you're 7 / 10 in every category then you're a heck of a player.

From Tuesday night, 1/10, Union Catholic "used a 13-6 run in the second quarter and a 16-7 run in the fourth to build its lead as it defeated Elizabeth 56-39 to run its record to 5-2." "Jordan Pierce put 15 points on the board." He is averaging 13.3 for the season.
Next game is tonight at St. Mary

Nahziah Carter's team, Bishop Kearney, outscored Edison Tech last night 26-12 in the second quarter and went on to win by a final score of 82-68. Their record is 8-3 after 11 games. Nahziah finished with 18pts and is averaging 20.7ppg on the season.
Next game is Saturday, 1/14, against Leadership Academy

After seeing last night's UD game, I feel compelled to ask about potential 5th year transfer PGs. McKinley Wright may be the real deal, but he'll still need a breather a few times a night, and Crosby hasn't convinced me that he's solid enough to handle 15-20 minutes a game with no major drop off in team performance.

Agreed. The problem with Crosby is he doesn't have basic PG skills. Doesn't know how to set up offense and is out of control almost every time he touches the ball.

Good 5th year PGs are hard to come by but I certainly agree! There was more than enough poor play spread around last night and in the DDN Archie was quoted, "You can chalk this one up on me. Clearly we weren't ready to go." One of the most grievous was giving Crosby way too many minutes! Scoochie's foul trouble contributed but 10 min. that Crosby played in the first half and 5 min. in the second half were exactly when the game was lost with 10-0 runs both times by UMass. I agree with your assessment that he's not solid enough to handle 15-20 minutes a game with no major dropoff in team performance.
Archie was going to leave Crosby in for the balance of the first half but at the 3:49 mark he was forced to put Scoochie back in with the 2 fouls after Pipkens had just picked John's pocket for an easy layup and Jarreau drove right around him to go up double digits. We then cut the lead back to 7 at the half.
I hope we can locate a good 5th year PG! Either that, or hope that McKinley Wright is as good as Scoochie was his freshman year!

The other option is a JUCO transfer--they would be eligible right away and wouldn't have to sit out a year.

More good news on McKinley Wright! Last night, 1/12, he led his team in scoring again with 28pts, 5 assists, 1 for 1 on 3 point shots and the stat that caught my eye 5 for 5 from the free throw line! Champlin Park defeated Osseo 81-64. McKinley raised his average to 23.5ppg as they stand 10-0 and are still ranked #1 in MN.
Next game is Tues, 1/17 at home against Elk River

No problem! I enjoy it! The way DD and JC have been playing recently we may need starter minutes from Jordan Davis and McKinley Wright next season!

In the one Sunday game, "Kyle Lofton scored 17 points and grabbed six rebounds as Union Catholic defeated Johnson, 70-50, in the Eric LeGrand Classic in Union. Jordan Pierce added 12 points and six boards in the win." Union Catholic is now 6-3 and plays Union on Tues. 1/17 at home in their next game.
