A-10 Tournament
GMU beats La Salle 2-1. Flyers play GMU at noon on Thursday in winner's bracket semi-final. GMU was the only A-10 team Dayton did not play during the season.

GMU 8 Flyers 5
Just a terrible start to tournament. English started in the circle. She struggled from the git go. Cash came in, but she was a bit wild. Snyder finished up and she was not much better.
Will need to win 2 tomorrow and 2 on Saturday to make the dance. Not good odds.

The best a team can do is win 2 to win the championship. While winning 4 may be difficult, for a team that was 20-2 in conference, I think it is far from out of the question.
Go Flyers!

Flyers 5, GMU 4.
Jennings with a monster 3-run home run for the Flyers in the bottom of the 6th. Tying run for GMU tagged out at the plate on a ground ball in the top of the 7th.
English, the A-10 pitcher of the year, again disappoints in the circle. Yesterday, she can't get out of the third inning. Today, she can't get out of the second. Cash comes in and holds for her second win of the day.
Flyers must win 2 against Fordham tomorrow to make the dance. Have to think LaPlaca has to start the freshman Cash and not the senior English.

Lets see major league pitchers don't go over 100 pitches yet Cash was close to 200 pitches if not over in her double header. Not sure what is wrong with English but we need her tomorrow, can't expect Cash to do double work again tomorrow. English hasn't had a decent game for several games now. Guess mentally she's graduated and moved on now.

Girls in softball throw tons of pitches. I've seen high school age girls throw 5 games in a weekend (Friday to Sunday) tourney. Close to 500 pitches.
The strain on the arm from the motion is just totally different, and especially in terms of recovery.
They are starting to see far more repetitive motion injuries with pitchers though. Not the elbow ligament and rotator cuff type injuries with baseball, but far more forearm stress fractures and elbow.

Fordham 8 Flyers 2
Snyder started in the circle, went 3 and got into trouble. Cash came in and went 3. Then English comes in and gives up a grand slam. Defense was shaky as well. Disappointing end to the season. Still, most wins ever in a season and first A-10 tournament final. Baby steps.

Congrats ladies on a great regular season. You now have a taste of what it is like to play in the A-10 championship, so build on that.
Can't win as many games as they needed with only effective pitcher. English was an absolute no show, in fact Dayton would have been better had she not showed. Has to be her worst performances of her career.
Dayton swept the regular season going 20-2 and taking the title. Then they swept the awards with Coach of year, Pitcher of year, Player of year and Rookie of year, which is quite an achievement. Then promptly was swept in the A-10 tourney. Okay they did win two games, barely.
Pitching and fielding failed us. Both were head scratchers.
Good news, Cash is only a freshman and there are several freshmen on the team.

Considering UD was (I think?) picked 5th in the preseason, to win the league outright and get to the A10 Finals drowns out any disappointment in not making the NCAAs. We were not even supposed to be here. Fordham was.
This year was a major step forward. Ancient Rome wasnt built in a day.

After the great season I was hoping they could pull off the championship, just not their weekend. Win or lose as a team....

Preseason predictions are based on what is known. Fordham had been to the championship game two season in a row and a senior laden team returning. Dayton had a good returing core of sophs, juniors and seniors which earned them a 5th place vote. Now enter the unkown, the freshmen and in particular Cash.
Cash and the freshmen class were major contributors in their success this year. Had the coaches known of the potential contributions of Cash and the freshman they would have vtoed them one or two in the conference. So based on their contributions Dayton was exactly where they were supposed to be. Awards are not given out lightly, Dayton swept them all because they earned them. Problem though is Dayton in many sports have a habit of getting caught up in the awards and reading their media accolades.
How can you explain the senior Kayla English otherwise. Pitcher of the year then a total meltdown of major proportions.
Make no mistake about it, Dayton's success was no fluke. One or two games maybe, but to go 20-2 in regular season is proof they were for real as was the freshman class, especially Mandi Cash.
In the first meeting between Fordahm and Dayton UD took two out of three and set the tone for the regular season conference. To make light of their success as they were not supposed to be there is just plain wrong. Maybe true if the freshman class didn't play as big a role as they did. But the facts speak for themselves. Pitchers allowed on average 2 walks per game then in the first game of the tourney against George Mason they had 11 walks and 4 hit batters. The team was not focused on the task at hand and were still basking in their glory for their achievements.
Fully expect this team to return as one of the top teams next year if not a repeat and a totally different frame of mind when it comes to receiving their accolades and handling of their success. Lessons to be learned by all returning players and coaches. Once the tourney starts everyone has the same record.
