Obi Toppin the Media Phenom

I hope everyone here is understanding the player we have in ONE OBI TOPPIN. Yes, I’m sure you do! But consider this, a program such as UD even with its great history has not seen a player of this magnitude this often and maybe for the first time in its’ history a player generating this much publicity. In the era of social media, 24/7 TV sports shows and talking heads on the radio, OBI has certainly been a topic of discussion.

A previous era when Velvet was displaying the talents and skills of a high level player none of these social and media avenues were thought of. Hell we weren't affiliated with any conference at the time so you could say only the local and surrounding region knew of Roosevelt Chapman during his time here. A few appearances in the NIT (by the early 80’s having lost some of its’ luster) presented some end of season attention as fleeting as it was, still prevented Velvet from much national recognition. It was only during Chapman’s senior year in the NCAA T run to the Elite Eight did he get his national recognition. The performance he had against Wayman Tisdale of Oklahoma (who BTW was very much talked about on the national scene and an AA) led many to believe that the UD-OK game would be the end of UD’s little improbable run. Instead along with many other players who contributed, Chapman battled Tisdale basket for basket in a great game of a #10 seed against a #2 seed, Oklahoma.

Chapman was quoted that on “Saturday, we’ll find out who the real All-American is”. After the game in which Chapman scored 41 to Tisdale’s 36, Tisdale stated, “He’s a great player. I always knew he was great. I’ve heard of Roosevelt before.” That telling phrase that Tisdale had heard of him rather than seen Chapman goes to why this era, this player we have now is something very special.

(Yes, you were wondering is this about Chapman or OBI? … And …. we finally get to move on! Whew!!)

The next national NCAA T run to the Elite Eight was composed of a team that had no significant national figure … maybe one of the “Truest of Teams” we have had here at UD. Yes, national exposure was higher. The attention took place more during the run based upon the growth of multiple media outlets and pre-game and post game talking head TV and cable shows, but again it was during and not while we were traveling on the ramp up to the T. Not quite like 1984 as we leaped into the national scene but similar still in a way.

Fast forward (finally!) to now the present situation.

From almost the first game of the season (in Maui) to now we have been on all manner of social media (Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, etc) and those 24/7 sports cable shows and broadcast games. And to see a picture of OBI wearing #1 and Dayton spread across his chest on multiple internet sites, MAN ARE YOU KIDDING ME? And why? Is this team a “true team” qualifier? Most likely. But what ingredient stirs the news and attention that most programs covet? A player of such magnitude that no one, almost absolutely NO ONE can say they haven’t heard of one Obi Toppin let alone never saw him, somewhere at some time, every week, anywhere you look on these media outlets.

Obi has been the media star of the team and like a solar system, he casts the shine and warmth on the other bodies surrounding him. Attention paid to the eco-system of players and program, has been displayed through the whole season placing everything about the institution and program in the national consciousness.

Out of nowhere (who in the national media thought of us before Maui?) where maybe even the fanatical of fan could not have imagined were UD stands now. UD finds itself at a level that may only have been experienced in those late 50’s and early 60’s NIT’s bolstered by the powerful print media in NY where, what they said and how they said it was not challenged. A household name which faded over time, wandering in the desert as an independent, a poor hiring decision, conference disfranchisement and eclipsed by Power 5 programs, 5 Star athletes, and lack of TV exposure.

So here we are, watching this significant event which some of you have never experienced, and perhaps all of us have never seen before, splashed across our consciousness derived out of those media outlets, on-line social media apps, in the digital world where everything, ... everything is bigger than life.

So Obi Toppin has placed this school, this program on his back and placed it within plain sight of everyone, everywhere. As some may lament that we are no longer “under the radar” it sure feels better to be in that bright sunshine Obi has cast upon us all.

Enjoy his time here. It will surely be fleeting.

Now, will the program be challenged to maintain this national consciousness?

Who will provide that spark to maintain the light shinning upon the program?

Or as has happened in previous sparks of national exposure, will Dayton be like that Super Nova, disappearing as a faint glimmer of light?

Obi Toppin has shot less than 50 percent in only two of Dayton's 24 games this season.

Dude is playing chess while everyone else is playing checkers.

The epitome of efficiency.

We stand on the shoulders of giants.

Thanks to all the great Flyer players, coaches, and fans of the past. Without them we would not be here where we are today.

If we wouldn't have been invited and played in the Maui tourney this year … who knows were we would sit today … with Obi now blotting out the sun with his dunks. Obi didn't need Maui but that is where the social eclipse started … where all the stars started to be aligned.

Always remember being a fan today, supporting UD, will impact where the UD MBB program will be in the future. We stand on the shoulders of giants.

If not you … who will support UD? I plan to make it to all the NCAA T games to support UD.

This team also makes me retroactively have a lot more patience with some of our teams in the past. It shows you how good of a team, with how good of a player you need to be dominant in the A10,,,and win those A10 road games that always pained me in the past. Its tough out there, and these guys are still kids/younng men. I appreciate those who decide to where the D.

I will say, much of the hype about Top 25 for 2-3 weeks, winning a game or two in the NCAA tournament, etc, is overrated as far as 'bringing in recruits'. I'm not saying it has no effect but it's completely overblown.

That said, OBI's exposure and the fact that Grant is most likely not going anywhere gives this team a chance to hopefully bring in higher levels of recruits than we're generally used to. People see what Grant did with OBI. A lot of it is him, but you need a coach as well.

The tough part is in the recruiting cycle we need 2-3 years of sustained success for the recruiting to pay off; this year won't help us out next year at all (unless there's a grad transfer). Hopefully the guys next year can hold the fort and still be at least a fringe top 25 team without OBI. If they can do that I think recruiting for AG will be easier moving forward.

Not only is Obi a great player, he is the type of player that is made for media with his explosive and spectacular style.

At one point this season, I was paging through the ESPN men's college basketball site and noticed three separate stories with a picture of Obi dunking associated with them.

Obi is fun to watch. Couple that with a whole team of players who know how to pass, shoot and dribble with high bball IQ and teamwork. The whole team is fun to watch. We are irresistible to media.

Two small points to pile on....
1) Crutcher is the perfect Robin to Obi as Batman. His game compliments Obi's soo well. Obi by himself is great. With Crutcher, wow.
2) Realistically, we only get to see the hype at it's highest for such a small amount of time. It's not like we see all out effort all the time. It used to bug me, seeking more. But now I accept this as the team just waiting to throw the switch... if needed. That first 6~8 minutes against URI was it. But by the end of the half they were almost bored (again). It part frustrating but also part amazing.

Another point to add to keats, Landers is the vocal leader of this team, he can yell at Obi, and Obi listens. Can't say that about all budding superstars. At the same time, Trey understands his role and executes its wonderfully.

The lasting image of this season so far, and perhaps forever, is Chips imitation windmill in sync to Obi's actual windmill dunk.

I'll make the case that it is the other way around - Coaches and teams are trying to construct elaborate defensive battle plans to contain - trap - check Obi. Meanwhile, Obi is just taking his big ole' No. 1 red checker and jumping over every one of his opponents checkers on the way to the hoop.

Another segment and discussion about Obi right now on ESPN Gameday Live. Jay Bilas says that Obi “will be Player of the Year.”

Really hope we make it to ATL...even better if we win it all.

I smell a 30 for 30 a few years down the road.

Hopefully this year reestablishes us in the national consciousness, but the follow up is just as important as the first shot...

I kind of chuckle at the comparisons from 1984 to 2014 to now. In 1984 our most famous player as you said was Velvet. And yes, the world had no clue how amazing he was until we finally got to the dance. And of course, the whole point of this article, Obi taking the college basketball world by storm. But you know what I chuckle about. That 2014 team, that true team, had one player with a household name, Scoochie, and he wasn't even a starter. He was famous and remembered based on his name. And while Jay Bilas has been the leader in getting the word out on Obi, it was Vern Lundquist's "Scoochie Coochie Coo" that did it for Dayshon Smith.

I talked to a man who worked for a sports analytical service a few years ago, I asked about UD. He said that UD always has lacked a dominant big man.

Obi is proving how correct he was. Obi is much more dominant than Sean or Chris or any UD big man going back to Hank Finke. (Before my time). It shows how his dominance has made such a difference.

Yes, guards are very important, but the A10 has lots of good very good guards. What most A10 teams lava is the quality big man like Obi

Joe Lunardi said last year, the A10:has produced very few players who were NBA caliber and had long NBA careers. UD has lots of players who were last player on the bench. BROb, was a great sub and role player. Joe said the last two A10 NBA players were Jameer Nelson and David West. A10 just does not produce NBA starters.

Obi could have a long NBA career. UD has to use that as a big recruiting tool to land more dominant big men.

All and great points. Just recall, we had Big Steve 1 year. Not nearly enough. He had the blocked shots. The fun
Personality, the talent to be that big guy.

Such a shame.

Here's a nightmare question about next year: Is it possible that Crutcher could go to the NBA this year?

We'd still have Chatman and Dwayne, but they aren't Crutch. . .

Is this a possibility that we have 2 draft selections?

Do not think so. As good as Crutcher has been, and as much as he adds to Obi's game, Jalen still has things he needs to improve on, and some people at this point may look at him as 'riding on Obi's coattails'. A year where he is more ' THE MAN' next year as a senior and continues to improve, would be needed to get drafted in the NBA

He won't be going to the NBA after next year. He's too small and he's not fast /strong enough and he's not a great athlete. He is a very very good college player and he will make money overseas to he is not an NBA player.

I just read another NBA draft prediction article. I see that ESPN is predicting that the Chicago Bulls will select Obi Toppin. That makes sense to me. With both John Paxson and Jim Paxson on the Chicago Bulls administrative payroll, it makes positive sense that they would be intimately aware of Obi’s value.

This from Jeff Borzello, ESPN staff writer, under today’s power rankings:

“Dayton continues to roll and Toppin hasn't had too many off nights in Atlantic 10 play. If the Flyers enter the NCAA tournament with two or three losses, Toppin is likely winning the award.”

So when has Obi had “an off night”?

The Paxson brothers don't have any greater insights on Obi than the rest of the NBA scouts because of their connection to UD. If he was a tweener or somehow under the radar, I would agree. But Obi's skills, demeanor, work ethic, etc. are not sneaking up on anybody.

@SLU he was "off" for most of the game. And he looked "off" for stretches in Saturday's game vs UMass. He missed what appeared to be a wide open bunny to start the game. Had multiple turnovers before the first media timeout. 0-2 visit to the charity stripe LATE in the game during UMass's final surge. Plus several other plays (offensively & defensively) that we're just not typical Obi...…...but it's amazing what's become "typical" for Obi.

You asked when he had an "off Night" and I was being sarcastic, UD didn't press the issue that game, Obi could have had 40 that day if UD wanted to boost his stats at the expense of developing the team.

@Duq he was off a bit. Still had like 20 points, but he turned it over and generally just fumbled the ball much more than normal.

His off games are still much better than most.

In addition to the @SLU game and the stretches of the UMass game I referenced, the Toppin "off night" happened last night at VCU. I'm happy to have the Toppin "off night" in the rear view mirror. Now, if we can get back to the Superman performances for the next 12-15 games...……..that'd be great (Bill Lumbergh voice).

Some of that off night was a result of VCU defense, which double and triple teamed him and made him press the issue. Fine let the rest of our team beat you.

Not to mention their free throw defense on Toppin. He was 1-4 from the line. He had 4 turnovers as well (a third of the team's total). I'm not sure he "pressed" the issue. I don't think he really took any poor shots. He's had a tendency to telegraph the cross court pass to the wing/corner out of the low post double team, and he did it last night several times.

Below 50% from the field. 1-4 FT. 4 TO's. That's an "off night" for anyone, let alone a player that's fighting for National Player of the Year. Toppin doesn't take anywhere near the number of shots as Garza, but Garza's not had a game like that in this calendar year.

I missed almost entire game last night up until around 25 seconds when VCU tore UD up on the boards the one possession where they got 3-4 shots up and finally hit one.Nice to see them, though, in a dog-fight type game and telling an opponent that they'll fight them and get bloodied up with them.

I didn't see any national network highlights. Did Obi's wave to the camera while laying under the basket get any play?
Everyone that I was watching with busted up laughing.

I don't think Crutcher goes to the NBA after this season, but after his senior season I'm not so sure.

He is small and has below average athleticism for the NBA (but that dunk last night says maybe not so below average). But he's rock solid with the ball in his hands, is a deadeye 3pt shooter with deep range and icewater in his veins, has improved his ability to get to the rim and get fouled and his defense has improved massively since last year. He's also a gifted passer with great court vision.

I could see him getting a look in the 2nd round of the 2021 draft. He's solid and teams could do a lot worse than Crutcher as a sub in their rotation.

The wink and wave didn't get play on ESPN, but they lead off the 11:00 SC w/ UD, approached the end w/ Crutcher's Dunk at #4, and closed saying that SVP was off for a few days but they would return with more highlights of Dayton. Dayton then started off the highlights for the 12:00 SC.

If I may answer my own question. (But probably not the last response to this question as it depends upon who plays above the current pay grade in the A10 T or NCAA T.)

Who will provide that spark to maintain the light shinning upon the program?

So far I gotta give the nod to one JC with his performances with Obi being hammered and grabbed anywhere near the rim/basket.

Crutcher is an interesting study compared to Brian Roberts. Roberts wasn't a polished PG but he developed the skill set even after UD. He was also a deadly shooter. He was not a good defender. So the European circuit allowed him to hone his skills. Throw in some NBAD League and a lot of hard development work, and you have a serviceable NBA back up with NBA tenure in the future and a nice living. I see Crutcher following a similar path.
He needs a good agent and some patience.

though... he didn't shoot much because
he didn't have to...

didn't we highlight our guards in that game?
Crutcher was injured or ill, and if memory
serves me Grant highlighted

Ibi Watson and Chatman, is that not correct..

I would not call that a bad game because
he did not put up usual box score stats...

I go beyond that...

what was Chatman and Watson combined,
I am recalling that is what Coach Grant
highlighted in that game....

Go Flyers!

It’s pretty funny as long as they don’t go too far. It’s good to see the team playing loose. I’m sure AG will make sure it doesn’t go too far.

I won't be shocked if Crutcher enters his name this year, gets evaluated, and withdraws.
The exposure and feedback is all up side.

Ya pretty much agree with you....He's definitely a right-handed player all the way.He has to be able to get into the lane more with his left.

Absolutely he'll be back next year and he'll have to hone in even more on his PG skills or, rather, PG weaknesses at only 6'1". He's certainly looking like a far better athlete this year than previous years but he has to get physically stronger to go to the next level. He's not an elite ball-handler but adding strength will keep guys off of him more.

If you follow either Obi or Daytonmbb on Instagram you learn a whole lot about this team behind the scenes. Obi has the maturity and perspective beyond his years. And Daytonmbb does an great job of capturing "behind the curtain" peeks of this team, including pre and post game locker room talks by AG.

Another nice write up from the Athletic, arguing that Obi is currently underrated when it comes to his draft positioning:

The first paragraph in this article is priceless...

https://www.slamonline.com/college-hs/obi-toppin-story/

Also like the insight into Obi’s personality with the Jablonski kid story. However, the Kostas comment shows the writer ran with that based on a 10,000 foot flyover without really doing his homework.

The final take...b-ball writers are ALL doing a piece on Obi and the Flyers, even if the only interview they can get is with the local news reporter. The list to interview Obi directly is long.

Media Phenom defined.

Last night was a magnificent showcase for Obi and Flyer basketball in general. I had to watch the DVR'd broadcast when I got home, and it was deeply gratifying. Dayton was impressive last night.

I believe this was a game recognized as one we couldn't lose if we tried, before it ever started. We were 28 point favorites. I believe if we were playing a tougher team, Jalen probably would've played. This was a game where a bunch of unselfish players used it to get others involved and boost their confidence. And I think it was by design. I was there, it was almost like they were purposely concentrating on getting players to do things they normally don't get a chance to do. Chatman playing PG for most of the game without Jalen, Jordy 22 minutes(Ryan had one less minute in that game), Dwayne 20 minutes, Jhery 13 minutes.

So, no, this was not a bad game by Obi, this was a game designed to help us for future games.

Nice to wake up and see Obi’s picture on the back page of the Wall Street Journal’s first section. A key paragraph:

Per*haps the most sur*pris*ing player to emerge from this jum*bled col*lege bas*ket-ball sea*son is Day*ton’s Top*pin. Dur*ing his ju*nior year of high school, when pro-grams put the full court press on bas*ket-ball’s elite prospects, he was a scrawny 6-foot-2 for*ward. Now, six years and 7 inches later, Top*pin is the most elec*tric dunker in men’s col*lege hoops.

Iowa Basketball has a picture of Obi / Garza with some cherry picked stats on their Player of the Year promo tweet. There are 15 players in the running and they single Obi out. Talk about trying to make yourself look good by ( trying to) put someone else down. I guess desperate times call for desperate measures.

Agree...and even though an individual honor, none of those cherry picked stats helped get his team ranked higher than the mid-upper teens.

This humors me. Who would have thought that a Big 10 school would have been selectively choosing stats to highlight their player over Obi for national player of the year? I'm thinking this says more about Obi than it does Luke Garza, kind of like how Pepsi always tries to convince you they are better than Coke; its good to be King

Truly hilarious. Opposing fan bases getting butt hurt and acting petty has got be my favorite part about being this good. And yes I realize that makes me petty.

Part of it is a badge of honor (for UD/Obi). They clearly feel Obi is either the leading candidate or Garza's stiffest competition.

It sure would be nice to see Obi get NPOY. What a season!

And consider Obi's path to this point. There hasn't been a game this year where he has hogged the ball or taken gratuitous shots. Everything has been within the scheme of the team. If he gets doubled, he makes great passes, and never seems to force plays that result in bad shots. Efficiency and team mentality!

This is what makes the Flyers irresistible to watch this year. I hear fans of other teams mention it all the time. They watch the Flyers for fun due to Obi's undeniable talent and the beautiful team play.

I think that is the thing that separates him from the other NPOY candidates is that he is EFFICIENT. The others are great in their own ways too but nobody does it as efficiently as Obi.

I enjoyed reading the Captain Obidiah Toppin
twitter account... very creative!

https://twitter.com/CaptObiToppin

lots of good ones, my favorite was after the
Davidson game:

Mother,

We have conquered the Atlantic, but the job is not finished. Gen. Vitale, who announced the future presence of Gen. Bilas and company, seemed to have admired the fight in our men. We will celebrate the victory tonight but we must remain grounded. March looms.

OB

lots of good tweets here....)

Go Flyers!

“Believe in Dayton’s Greatness Yet?” Was the third topic on ESPN’s PTI today. Basically both Kornheiser and Wilbon agree that you don’t prove greatness on March 5th, but Dayton has a good chance to prove it’s greatness. And of course they had high praise for Obi.

For those who weren't told there would be no math:

In short, if you ignore the freak of nature that is Zion Williamson, Obi compares quite nicely to other winners in the brief history of the Malone Award.

Maybe someone can find a link, but there was a three minute segment on SC last night on Obi & his best dunks of the season.

#3: Jump stop dunk vs. N. Florida

Very insightful interview. Interesting tidbits on Obi’s family and background, but also about Dayton and Coach Grant. His parents proclaim Obi ready for the NBA, which is a no-brainer at this point. Good stuff.

Us Basketball Writers seledt Obi First Team
http://sportswriters.net/usbwa/news/...ica200323.html

The individual award, Oscar Robertson Trophy will be announced Wednesday at 2pm.
Would be so cool for Obi to receive the award named after Bucky's teammmate and friend.

Looks like Toppin won the AP Player of the Year Award and Grant is the AP Coach of the Year.

And the Phenom keeps on gettin'

Might have to start a separate thread concerning our coach Mr. A Grant!

PS

I wonder if Bill Self had to pay for that 1 vote or if that 1 vote is a testament by the AP Voters that there is something going on with Self ala scandal.

I cannot speak for all Priders, but I must say that I am darned proud of Obi and Coach Grant! Who would have ever dreamed this? We missed the trifecta of national champions, but this makes it all worthwhile.
