BEVERLY HILLS (MI) -- The holidays are behind us and with them so too is the non-conference schedule for the UD Flyers. It’s not quite like MLB where Spring Training ends and teams start with a clean slate and begin playing games for real, but it’s close. Play well in the 18 A-10 tilts; win the conference hoop fest in Brooklyn in March and suddenly the Sons of Anthony Grant are dancin’. Wouldn’t that be nice?

Not to discount the bakers dozen worth of games that have already taken place, but the purpose of the non-con slate is not to go 13-0—it’s to get ready for the A-10. Playing teams like Butler, Oklahoma, Virginia, Mississippi State, Auburn and Tulsa will pay large dividends in the months to come as no one in the conference has emerged as a clear-cut favorite.

Elsewhere in hoopdom:

-- If you are not already a member of Pride Plus, you really need to do yourself a favor and pony up. Chris has provided members with some excellent analysis on the vagaries of the NET ratings and their impact upon non-Power 5 schools like UD.

-- Speaking of NET, here are the latest rankings:

-- “The Hometown Coach” Mark Adams researched the NET and concluded (to no one’s great surprise) that it favors big budget teams:

-- ESPN’s Joe Lunardi has released his first Bracketology and there is only one A-10 team on it:

-- Jeff Goodman (formerly of ESPN) at Stadium.com has released the list of early men’s college hoops transfers:

-- One name of high interest to UD fans on that list is Chase Johnson, a 6’9” wing who is leaving Florida for greener pastures. Johnson and his folks were seated behind the UD bench for the Flyer victory over Georgia Southern, so he saw this:

Which kinda reminds me of this video of Chase his own self:

If Johnson wants to be eligible for the 2nd semester in 2020 he needs to decide soon. According to this tweet, CJ is currently visiting Pitt, so it sounds like a two-horse race for his services:

-- ESPN returns 'SportsCenter' to its roots: 'I think we miscalculated a little bit.' Ya think?

-- Get ready for the big tease: Big East Commissioner hints at potential expansion:

-- This is just so cool -- old photos from behind the scenes on the set of ‘The Godfather’:

-- The other day at the Birmingham YMCA I was playing pickup hoops with a few younger fellas. At the other end of the gym a rather large guy was going thru some drills with his headphones on. When our game broke up and the other gents left I asked the young man if he wanted to play one-on-one. Turns out it was this guy:

Donovan kicked my butt up one side of the court and down the other. I did manage to jump out to an 8-2 lead in one game (up to 12) but ended up losing 12-10. I told him he’s playing for the “real Xavier” and that the one in Ohio is BS. He laughed.

That’s it “From the Swamp.”
