Possible Wichita State/Dayton series??
Marshall said on his radio show that he had a discussion with Miller about setting up a series between the schools. There has to be some mutual interest or Marshall wouldn't have mentioned it.
Marshall didn't say this, but sometimes these things take some time to get worked out. Both teams already have some commitments and some schools they're already negotiating with. Dates get tricky.
Might not happen next year, but there is mutual interest.

That would be awesome. Might want to change the name of the thread before the Wright State backers get going.

I was hoping that is what Archie and Marshall were chatting about in the post-game handshake.

I played it back multiple times and it looked like Marshall said "Great ****ing game, we need to play this game every year." He does turn his head a little bit so its to tell for sure but that's what it looked like to me.

Would be a great mid season game. Both teams somewhat in mid stride rather than getting their legs underneath them early in season.
Let's say we play on MLK Day and then we could have those people in Fairborn and some posters here up in arms!
Otherwise, this would be a great game between two very good programs. Am already looking forward to it.

Possible great move by both teams to avoid another Second Round (really First Round) match up unless the committee decide to say it was "unavoidable".

I would love to have Alabama back for the ESPN tip off marathon, or whatever they call it that we have played Bama in the past two seasons.
But if Bama does not want a 5th straight butt kicking, bring in WSU instead.

I have no source or inside knowledge, but I feel confident that the UD @ St Mary's game will be the 11:00 PM tip off on Monday night during ESPN's tip off marathon.

I'd love to play a game like this in mid/late conference play. It would be like making our own bracket busters game. I miss that event.

Hope it happens. Series seems like it would be a very good fit for both sides. Would make for good TV too. Some nice storylines and a game that even casual college basketball fans could get excited for...

I do not think coaches would like to play a game like this during conference play. It would break the routine. It's different for the schools that have a buy game to fill in a bye in the conference season, but I do not recall any big OOC games during conference play in recent years.

In a perfect world everything you all are saying is right! But the power 5 loving talking heads would likely turn such a game into an "elimination" event.... like they did with the old Bracket Busters games a few years ago. They don't need much to diss the non-power 5 schools....

Archie hated the A10 conference schedule this year and I highly doubt he wants to play a non conference game in the middle of it. If the game is played it will be played in November or December.

We know that Archie wasn't a real fan of the A10 seemingly scheduling games on any night of the week at any time because he felt it hurt the team's ability to really get into a routine. So I do doubt very much that Archie would want to insert this game into the non-conference. Not sure how much different it would really be in reality, but coaches are creatures of habit... And certainly I'd hate to take a bad loss to some bad A10 team the guys were looking past to play this game that everyone had circled on their calendars.

Well traveling across country and playing in PST is different than when you play all your games in EST except for SLU. That would be the big difference.

Xavier did this several times when they were in the A10...also, The Crosstown Shootout.
Wichita State has done this several times recently: Davidson, Detroit, New Mexico State, Utah State, Northern Arizona, Cleveland State, etc.
I suppose some of those games might have been Bracket Buster games?

All the Wichita State games were bracket busters, the MVC participated in that every year. As for Xavier and the Crosstown Shootout, that is a team they play every year. It is very similar to having a league game because they know the opponent so well. This is not the typical OOC game playing against a team you have no real history with. But I do admit I forgot about that one.

The A10 has consistently had a handful of very high RPI programs which give opportunities for resume-building wins in the 2nd half of the season. The MVC has not been able to do that as consistently. For Wichita State, an OOC game late in the season against a top RPI program makes complete sense. Same for Gonzaga in the WCC.
For Dayton, I'm not necessarily against scheduling an OOC game late in the season. But I just don't think they'll do it. And I certainly don't think Dayton need to do it unless the A10 drops off considerably.

St. Mary's probably ends up as an 8 seed if they didn't have our win on their resume. It really didn't hurt us either. These non P5 schools need to stick together. It's obvious it doesn't matter what your winning % against top 50 RPI is, only that you win some of these games. The best chance of winning some is by playing more of them.
Of course, once UD and others change their scheduling to accommodate this new reality, the committee will change the rules again...

Kentucky - Kansas has been during conference play the last couple of years. Last weekend of January.
I agree those games are very rare. They usually need prime-time national TV. Not sure WS and UD would get the prime national TV when there are likely big P5 games available.

Wikipedia says that the Bracket Buster thing ended in 2013...WSU played New Mexico State in 2015, during the MVC schedule, so I think that is the only non-BB game recently for WSU.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bracket_buster
Over their last 5 years in the A10, X also played Memphis, Florida, Georgia, and LSU in home and home series. Each of those 5 years featured a non-conference game, against 1 of those 4 schools, that was played during the A10 schedule.

I hope Dayton and Wichita play each other because reading this board after the game at UD Arena to see what everyone has to say about Gregg Marshall's psycho wife would be such great reading! I'm not saying that to insult her. I'm saying that to describe her. She is a COMPLETE nut, and has been since they were at Winthrop. She managed to get herself thrown out of the NCAA Tournament game. I'm impressed!!
If this happens, then the UD students need to be good and ready for her!

The New Mexico State game was originally scheduled for December, before MVC play but was postponed. It was moved to an open spot during both of their schedules during conference play. It was not scheduled this way.
http://www.espn.com/mens-college-bas...2724/year/2016
As far as my argument, you found 1 school that typically does this. I said most coaches don't like this, I did not say all coaches. But to further my point, all those teams are in the same timezone or within 1 time zone. This is similar in travel with teams in your league. Coaches and players are creatures of habit and like routines. This is why for MOST COACHES, games like this do not work.

With what WSU has coming back, next year would be very tough for us, especially playing there, but in two years, lookout. But take it in a heartbeat if offered a home and home. Same with BYU, Ill St, Zaga and most of the AAC.

I am not a fan of playing Illinois State for a H&H. They lose their top 2 players this year in Hawkins and Lee. They also lose a 3rd starter and key bench player. They are typically a middle of the road Valley team. With the direction the Valley is going, we could find a better team to play. A few years back when they still have Creighton and UNI was better, I would be all for it. But at 26-7 team from the league and not being able to get an at-large says a lot about the direction of the Valley.

Or when Gregg Marshall bails. In either scenario, the conference goes from having one consistently strong program to having zero. Regardless, I'd still schedule the game.

Wichita State commits enough resources to basketball to remain competitive once Marshall leaves, if he ever does. The rest of the MVC regressing is a bigger threat to their program than the loss of Marshall. But Gonzaga has managed to stay where they are despite the WCC.

I'm impressed!!
If this happens, then the UD students need to be good and ready for her!

The UD students should just stick to travels and double dribbles. Their track record with wives is wholly unbecoming.
